Rogic, Zenit’s final prep

296

Pictures of Tom Rogic back at training are very welcome but he will surely be weeks away from competing at the top level, I don’t hold out any hope for him playing in the away game against Zenit, never mind the home game.  You will remember Brendan Rodgers took a long time before allowing Tom to play an entire 90 minutes, suggesting latent concerns about the player’s natural fitness.  I have him down for an appearance at the end of the month.

Zenit got the better of Maribor in Turkey on Saturday in their final warm-up game before facing Celtic, although the Slovenians, also on a midterm break, had more of the play and chances. There is little confidence ahead of Thursday’s Europa League tie, but that nervousness you feel in July, when we leave for Scandinavia to play a team 22 games into their season, will be felt in Russia right now.

Zenit may be stronger, but we have reasons to be hopeful.

    Cathedral

it is interesting to watch Juve when Spurs attack … the players funnel back and get into their positions…. but they are constantly moving …. when one defender moves, the other adjusts, and so on … it is like watching water ripple ….

something quite zen and beautiful about it … but takes hard work and training to do that …. why the italians are masters at defending

Thoroughly enjoyed your post today (12-53) . Brought back lots of happy memories. The “lady pit” was only a few hundred yards up the old railway line in our village, and many an hour was spent sliding down the bing on a length of what looked like a section of conveyor belt.

Thinking back, there was often smoke coming from that bing. Probably unsafe but never thought about it at the time.

As kids we followed whatever sport was current. We used the neighbours hedges as part of our grand national course, had our own Wimbledon court which was a clothes stretcher built up on bricks, and a putting green made by digging holes in the park and putting empty tin cans in as the cup.

Like you say all kids together. Fairly even split amongst Billy’s and Tim’s. No animosity.

Happy days…..and then we all “ grow up”

    Or do we?

  3. MIT,

Yes, well drilled and very professional. Like most Italian teams they don’t get caught out of position often.

Spurs have had some great results in Europe this season but I think tonight is a step up for them.

Really interested to see how this one plays out now.

  4. I have seldom felt so little enthusiasm for a game as I do for thursday.

Even allowing for injuries, we appear to have lost the togetherness of last year, and I base that on viewing performances, not on daily rags,Twitter,or input from Celtic sites such as E tims.

Other than Brown, our midfield is either work in progress,or does not work, thus giving our much maligned back three little cover, but I do accept they have created their own problems at times.

We are too light,no dig and frankly players who don’t have the team truly at heart,we need battlers who appreciate playing for Celtic is not something you do on the way to France or England as your next move.

Forget these tourists being bought as potential sell on profit makers,we should have bought McGinn and Shinnie to give Brown some support,as opposed to getting Charley from Chelsea at rates which would have gone a long way towards an actual purchase.

Remember when we drafted in the unfancied Hartley and Robson, those guys were a revelation and won us the league.

I dont know anything about Zenit, but I do know that Kilmarnock wiped the floor with us and made us look very average, all due to workrate and desire.

I am surprised Brendan has not booted the reluctant conscripts into touch,he was quick enough binning Svietchenko and Henderson, all they asked was give us a game, seems a fair comment now I would suggest.

  5. Does anyone remember playing Rounders? Played with a cricket bat, loosely bases on cricket.

Or Long Shootey? When it was just you and a pal scoring penalties against each other.

  6. Jim

    Long shootie yes.

Another popular one where we lived was “ World Cup”

2 players. One in goals. The ‘ outfield ‘ player shooting at him. If it goes in…. goal…. wide or over the bar…. goal to keeper.First to 3 goals.

Favourite Uncle … not sure it is the same thing…. for those italians teams, defending is second nature to them … and with someone like GHiguain up top, they are always a danger on the counterattack … I say as he rolls one wide! LOL

  8. Just been on The Celtic Blog and read an interesting article by James Forest regarding the hits given to the Daily Ranger. The article itself makes sense (to me anyway), but I particularly liked this bit;

“My Newsnow feed might well look different to yours, and that’s really the point of this piece. If you use Newsnow regularly, you should consider registering with the site. If you do that, you are allowed to filter out your news feed. At the risk of some of you doing it so you never again have to see a headline from this site, I strongly advise that you do. I have removed a slew of click-bait sites, like HTC and others, in order to eliminate some of the extraneous white noise that’s out there. You should consider doing the same with The Daily Record.”

I didn’t know that, but I’ve just registered (took a couple of minutes in total) and blocked my own wee selection of dross. Feel MUCH better for it!

  9. Excathedra44,

for every successful signing from a Scottish club there will

    have been as many failures,

imagine the bedlam on here if we signed McGinn and Shinnie

and they did not produce, neither of the 2 have impressed me that much

that i want us to sign them

  10. Higuain blooters it against the bar from the spot. 2-1 half time agter a penalty miss by Higuain, who was on a hat-trick :-(
