Ronny’s Aberdeen-Salzburg dilemma

1430

Before the second leg against Maribor I went into detail about how important it was for Ronny Deila to rest his players.  He did, we lost to Inverness and players spent the bulk the Maribor game looking like strangers.

Since then players’ propensity to look strangers has increased, with the arrival of Stefan Scepovic, John Guidetti and Wakaso Mubarak, not to mention the anticipated return of Aleks Tonev.  Ronny has some serious decisions to make.

Does he flood the team with all this new blood, or allow them time to build match fitness and familiarity?  New blood is badly needed but so is team cohesion.

Any decision for Aberdeen will be made with the visit to Salzburg one week today in mind.  On paper, away to the top seed is our most difficult Europa League game, so we have to be ready.

My expectation is that three, if not all four, of the above will feature heavily on Saturday, which will inform Ronny ahead of his choices for Europe.

Fancy some comfy seats at the Aberdeen game and helping Mary’s Meals as well?  The Club’s main sponsor Magners have again offered us two premium seat tickets for the Jock Stein Stand, which you can win by answering the following question:

Who do Celtic play in the lunchtime kick off on Saturday, 13 September 2014?

Optionally….. if you have £1 available, please donate £1 to Mary’s Meals at this MyDonate page, which sends your £1 straight to Mary’s Meals, then send me your confirmation email, with your contact details to celticquicknews@gmail.com  Competition closes noon on Friday, so get your entries in now and watch your inbox on Friday afternoon.

You can donate more than £1, if you like, but £1 from as many people as possible will be gratefully received, as, like many organisations working in Africa right now, they are encountering a wave of additional ebola-related challenges.

Thanks for helping.

Terms and Conditions of the competition apply and are available here.

  1. Optimistic about the new Scandanavian slant to the Bhoys. Rightly or wrongly, I am looking forward to watching a New Plan. Its intriguing…. And it was needed.

Aye or Naw…. Tell you what…. I am hugely impressed by the political engagement that I witnessed when I was home for a few weeks in the summer. And now. All, young and old. For years there has been a resignation that the electorate cannot change anything…. And I am not talking specifically about Independence for Scotland…. I mean anything politically worthwhile.

Millions march to stop the invasion of Iraq…. No consequence.

The sleaze that killed of the Conservative Governments of the 80’s and 90’s…. Was replaced by the false hope of New ‘improved whiter than white’ Labour Government of Blair and Brown.

The Hope, who, in Berlin, sold the old Razzle Dazzle of ‘Chicago’ and who was believed after the dangerously babbling W….. Was another “New, ‘improved’ Product. He was worse, rubber stamping the policies of W, and bailing out the banks as one of his first acts.

All around the developed world, for the greatest part, Political Apathy reigns. It reigns because families are worn down economically, emotionally and politically. Who has the time to try to change political party machines that are set in concrete by their paymasters. Its all a PR, focus group, advertising, soundbite, repetitive, monstrous hypocrisy.

In Scotland there is a political engagement that is refreshing, hopeful and much closer to the so called ‘democracy’ that we are sold. People around the world are themselves engaged and impressed.

I do not think Scotland will be the same whatever the outcome of this Referendum.

And thats all for the Good….

I would bet a million smackerooneys on that.

    Roll On The Future….

One of the notable features of the Scottish referendum is just how crystal clear the question will be: “Should Scotland be an independent country?”

    That’s six words.

Compare that to the deliberately confusing question Quebecers were asked in 1980 —

“Do you agree that Quebec should become sovereign after having made a formal offer to Canada for a new economic and political partnership within the scope of the bill respecting the future of Quebec and of the agreement signed on June 12, 1995?”

  3. Afternoon gents. Bit of a work question, does anyone know how long after opting out of Sundays, how much notice do they have to give you before they can’t guerentee you one of your shifts? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  4. PJBhoynyc,

Apathy is the key to this referendum imo.

And this is why Westminster is starting to look a bit scared.

They have relied on apathy for some time.

Those who care enough to think of themselves as no voters with any kind of depth will turn out in minimal numbers to vote.

The yes campaign, as you rightly realise, has passion on its side.

The biggest turn out of voters is going to come from yes voters, including myself.

This is a yes vote. I can’t see it going any other way.

No voters out there are really really few and far between, which is why I find these polls bizarre. But even if they’re correct, apathy will kill the BT vote. Poetic justice, I suppose.

All this despite some poor stuff from the yes campaign, and frightening policies from the SNP, particularly regards judicial and finance policy.

Thankfully, the resurgence in political passion amongst the Scots will see them quickly put in their place, I hope, and we can start Independence without the need for armed rozzers on the streets, and a return to a judicial system that isn’t governed by one man >:(((

The first moves in the transition to independence have to allow for the removal of the Mafia for the Mediocre, and this is why folks like Big Nan will be more crucial than ever to the welfare of this country.

Ronny Deila spoke with Van Dijk following his return from international duty and insists he’s focused on starring for Celtic.

Deila said: “I have no concerns about his commitment. I can honestly say I’m really happy about language and he is happy. Now he is focused on getting good results with Celtic and getting better.

“I hope the supporters accept that as well. I understand they were not happy he didn’t play at Dundee, but that was my decision. Virgil was not 100 per cent in his head. But now he is.

“He has said to me that he is so grateful to be at this club. Without the chance to play for Celtic, he wouldn’t be where he is today. He saw an opportunity to leave, but then he didn’t go. He knows what he has here and he is looking forward to the rest of the season.

“He’s very happy now. He’s just become a dad and he’s been with his national team for the first time.

“He has to understand how important he is. He is such an unbelievably good player for us.”

Deila insists any inquiries for Van Dijk fell short of Celtic’s valuation and is confident he won’t seek a move when the transfer window reopens in January.

He said: “There was interest in him, but it was not even close to what we are thinking about.

“We were not interested in selling him anyway. He is one of the players we are going to build a new team around.”

Scott Brown is poised to return after suffering a hamstring injury in a pre-season clash with Rapid Vienna in July.

Deila added: “He looks very well. He could maybe play on Saturday.

“Everybody knows how important Scott is to this team. He looks good and needs minutes under his belt. It’s positive and his body is improving quick so that’s good.”

  7. Neil Lennon & McCartney on

Charlie Mulgrew is set for a spell on the sidelines after being injured on Scotland duty.

Deila said: “Charlie is struggling with his knee.

“I don’t know how long that is going to take to get better.

“It could be some weeks. He has a cartilage problem with his knee and it could need surgery, but I hope we don’t need to do that.”

  8. Neil Lennon & McCartney on

John Guidetti says he is is ready to be pitched into the action on Saturday against Aberdeen, but admits it may take him time to hit top form.

“I can’t promise anything because you never know in football, but all the fans can expect is that I’m going to give 110% every game and work my socks off,”

“If the manager wants me to play one minute I play one minute hard, and if he wants me to play 120 minutes and take a penalty that is what I will do.

“I would love to hit the ground running but anything can happen in football and if I don’t hit the ground running it’s not like I’m going to stop – I’m going to do my best in every game.”

Efe Ambrose is confident Nigeria will qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations despite failing to impress against South Africa and Congo in its two matches played.

The Celtic star believes the Super Eagles has what its takes to come tops in a group that consists of South Africa , Sudan and Congo .

“It was a difficult game against South Africa . They gave us a good fight, but we will still make sure we qualify for the Nations Cup.”

In all, Nigeria has won only one of its last 11 matches, scoring eight goals and conceding 12.

  10. Neil Lennon & McCartney on

Alexsandar Tonev will miss Celtic’s clash with Aberdeen on Saturday.

The Bulgarian was signed on loan from Aston Villa a month ago but is still waiting to make his hoops debut.

Tonev struggled to make the breakthrough at Villa last season and has had a frustrating time since switching to Celtic.

“He is training, he looks very good but still feels something in his groin,” Ronny Deila explained today. “We will see what we are doing, we can’t take any chances but he is near to making his debut.”

  11. FFM

    You meant ‘regarding” right?

Just to annoy the feck out of you more.

    love

    As SOAL would say…

I agree wholeheartedly. The resurgence you refer to is breathtaking. And If it is a yes, all parties will be set loose of London dictates…. especially the SNP.

All of them, particularly the SNP will be challenged, and held accountable to an engaged, articulate, rejuvenated electorate. Its historic and fascinating.

The Scots have set an example of what a democracy should be. That makes me happy. The turnout for registering of votes was a big fox put among complacent chickens.

I do not have a vote, but I have never felt more hopeful or empowered….Ever.

1.8 million marched in Barcelona for Catalan Independence…with Scottish flags prominent.

Its encouraging… and long overdue for this auld guy..

At a minimum…Things are looking up.

A character writ large who has a lot to live up to

    Friday 12 September 2014

FOR a lad who has been called cocky and arrogant, John Guidetti makes a disarming first impression.

Celtic manager Ronny Deila happily unveils his most recent signing, John Guidetti, who has joined the club on loan from Manchester City. Picture: SNS

Celtic jumped through hoops in order for him to wear them, and the Swedish striker should make his debut against Aberdeen tomorrow. The deal was done so late on deadline night – almost too late – that Fifa approval was required for him to become a Celtic player at all. It was too late for him to be registered in time to play in the Europa League group stage. If Guidetti is to make a positive name for himself in the remainder of 2014 it can only be by tearing up Scottish defences.

He isn’t short of personality. As he faced the media yesterday he happily took a question about all the tattoos which cover his right arm. Pointing to this one, then another, then another, he offered explanations on what they meant. One was a song lyric: “We all cry but when the tears dry we get stronger.” That’s from a song called Stronger by Tarrus Riley, for any of the uninitiated . . .

Guidetti joked that it is easy to get addicted to having tattoos done. “My mum’s not very pleased,” he smiled. Doubtless Mrs Guidetti is really her boy’s biggest fan, but he won’t be short of tens of thousands of other admirers if he can rekindle the form which has infused his career with much unfulfilled potential. He has been with Manchester City since 2008, appearing in only one game, and Celtic is the fifth club he has been loaned to since then. The most rewarding of all those, by far, was the 2011-12 campaign spent with Feyenoord in the Netherlands. It was there that he scored 20 times in 23 games, and where he felt the adulation of a big support for the first time in his career.

“As you may know now, I’m a bit of a freak when it comes to fans. I remember even in the Swedish league I could just go to games and be caught up by the supporters, stop watching the game and just watch them instead for 10 minutes or so. I’d forget about the game.

“Feyenoord have amazing fans as well. I heard they have a good relationship with Celtic fans. I have seen some messages on Twitter that say if you don’t support Feyenoord but you do support Celtic then it’s fine. So just to be able to play in front of amazing fans again will be great. That’s what I’ve been missing, scoring goals in front of a crowd that enjoys it.

“I really do feed off the fans. The big games, if we’d beaten Ajax or whatever, I could’ve stayed on the pitch for half an hour after full-time and danced with them. I think fans make football amazing. Take them away and what is football, really?”

As he spoke, Guidetti sat with something significant on his lap: his new Celtic shirt, with No.9 on the back. He had been quoted about filling the No.7 shirt synonymous with, among others, Henrik Larsson. The pair have some things in common but Guidetti commendably downplayed any similarities with the Parkhead great. There were no boasts about filling his boots or emulating him.

“Of course I idolised Henrik Larsson when I was growing up. He’s a legend, a great football player. People are obviously going to compare me with him [as two Swedish strikers, both having been at Feyenoord before Celtic]. But that’s difficult. Everything he did for Celtic was amazing.

“I grew up my whole life knowing about Celtic, especially coming from Sweden with Henrik playing here and also Johan Mjallby. But there’s also Mikael Lustig. Celtic is a club that has treated Swedish people so well. But I also got a connection with the manager [Ronny Deila] when I spoke to him. That was crucial. He really knew who I was as a player and as a person. It wasn’t like he’d just heard about me and it was ‘oh, he’s scored a few goals, let’s bring him in’. He had clearly watched me plenty of times and knew who I was. That was a major reason why I chose to come here.”

He had been worried that the lateness of the deal would mean it collapsed. Having signed, he was sanguine about the fact he would be unable to play in the Europa League group games which start next week. Playing at all will feel like a relief. Although only 22, Guidetti’s career has stuttered and stalled since he lost feeling in his right leg as a result of a virus contracted in April 2012. That ended his great Feyenoord spell and denied him a place with Sweden at Euro 2012. He returned to Manchester City and struggled with the problem until being loaned to Stoke City in January of this year, where he did not start regularly.

“I did well then I was injured for two years. It is difficult to fulfil something when you’re not playing. You can’t say ‘he’s not good any more’ when the reason is injury. What football player chooses to be injured? When you’ve been injured for a while, it takes time. It’s like anything in the world, it’s not like you just pick up juggling balls and carry on like you were before.”

YouTube has a clip of Guidetti scoring a wonderful free kick for Sweden under-21s against Greece a week ago. Is that what Celtic fans can expect? “Of course. Every time I score like that!” He was smiling again. Celtic have signed a character. They will hope, as he does, he can prove to be as big on the pitch as off.

Barcelona target eludes Celtic while club loan out young duo

    Staff writer

    Friday 12 September 2014

CELTIC have failed in their transfer-deadline attempt to sign Barcelona forward Jean Marie Dongou on loan.

Barcelona indicated that the SPFL Premiership champions made a late bid to persuade the La Liga leaders to lend them the Cameroon striker for a season.

The 19-year-old made his debut for Barcelona in their 6-1 defeat of Celtic in the Champions League last season when he came on as a substitute in the closing stages.

Dongou scored in a 3-1 win in Scotland in the UEFA Youth League, and has four goals in three games this season for Barcelona B.

However, Barcelona manager Luis Enrique blocked the move because Celtic wanted Dongou for a season, and he is expected to feature in his plans as the Spanish season goes on.

Meanwhile, Clyde player/manager Barry Ferguson has expressed his delight after signing Celtic 17-year-old Aidan McIlduff. The Scotland youth international has signed a 90-day loan and could make his debut in tomorrow’s League 2 meeting with East Stirlingshire.

McIlduff played against Barcelona, Milan and Ajax in the Uefa Youth League last season.

Ferguson said: “I’m pleased that Celtic have agreed for him to come to Clyde and continue his development.

“I’m delighted to have concluded the deal after tracking Aidan for a number of weeks. He’s a young player with bags of potential.”

Also going out on loan is Celtic defender Marcus Fraser, who was yesterday signed by Cowdenbeath manager Jimmy Nicholl.

The 20-year-old centre-half or full-back – who has been capped for Scotland at under-16, under-17, under-19 and under-21 levels – will go straight into the Fife side for their SPFL Championship match away to Hibernian tomorrow. He has joined as a 93-day emergency loan.

Nicholl said: “He is a determined, ambitious and motivated defender who is highly thought of at Celtic. We are delighted. We are bottom of the league with one point and I am confident he will help us get out of this situation.”

  17. PJBhoynyc,

    Well spotterd guv :))

“rejuventated electorate” is exactly the phrase I was looking for. That’s what I see, and it seems to be contagious.

If this happens, it will lead to the breakdown of the UK, leaving the US pretty much alone in it’s imperial endeavours.

It should have a big impact on international policy, but this subject has been rarely touched on from the scant attention I’ve paid.

But from seeing snippets of how this is being reported elsewhere, it seems a lot of countries are behind this as well.

Sadly, I also feel that a lot of the English are oblivious to the real impact of what is about to happen, as they are still unaware of how the media manipulates them, and are therefore being conditioned into trivialising the outcome.

It’s a great benefit of this referendum, the awareness of MSM manipulation, which Scotland is now becoming immune to, although we will still here the words “he brings it on himself” spoken about Lenny for some years. But it’s a giant leap forward.

Maybe they won’t be that far behind in England, and the next few years will see them too shake off the shackles of the corporate driven media, and the right-wing, selfish voting garbage that comes with it. We live in hope.

The other outcome in England would be a bit scarey, but less likely, although not impossible. The seeds have been planted, and there are already signs that some of them feel like a country lost, while blaming the whingeing Scots for all this referendum nonsense, and immigrants for all the other problems the Tories give them.

  19. Re Virgil,

I think there was the realisation that a run in Europa when the team is a bit more on form would increase his value for an available sale in January, while at the same time, we were on the verge of a Celts for Change 2 a couple of weeks ago, and the sale of the last valuable (financially) player in the squad would have been the nail in the coffin for PL.

Deila weighs up Celtic ins and outs

    Friday 12 September 2014

CELTIC are calculating whether to bring back captain Scott Brown weeks ahead of schedule this weekend, just as they face losing his midfield team-mate Charlie Mulgrew for around a month.

It was thought Brown might be unavailable until the middle of October after a serious hamstring tear in a friendly against Rapid Vienna on July 6. The 29-year-old missed all six of their Champions League qualifiers and Scotland’s Euro 2016 fixture in Germany, but manager Ronny Deila is optimistic he will be able to face Aberdeen at Celtic Park tomorrow.

“He looks very well; he could maybe play on Saturday,” said Deila. “Everybody knows how important Scott is to this team. He looks good and needs minutes under his belt. He is training with the team well now. It’s positive and his body is improving quickly, so that’s good.”

Just as Brown returns, Mulgrew will slip out of the side. Despite having played virtually all of the game in Dortmund until he was sent off in stoppage time, Mulgrew reported a problem with his knee and Celtic fear that an operation may be necessary.

“Charlie is struggling with his knee now. I don’t know how long that is going to take to get better. It could be some weeks. He has a meniscus problem with his knee and it could need surgery, but I hope we don’t need to do that,” the manager said. Deila made light of the fact it was a fellow Norwegian, Svein Oddvar Moen, who gave Mulgrew two cautions and a red card during time added on. “At least Charlie got a rest … but I wish the referee had done it earlier.”

Celtic’s return to SPFL Premiership duty will feature Virgil van Dijk’s first appearance since declaring himself unable to play against Dundee in the champions’ last game. Van Dijk was upset that he did not get a move to the Barclays Premier League before the close of the transfer window and told Deila he was in no condition to play at Dens Park. Now, having been called up to the Netherlands squad and become a father for the first time after his partner had a baby, he is apparently available for Celtic duty again.

“I have no concerns about his commitment,” said Deila. “I can see his body language and he is happy. Now he is focused on getting good results with Celtic and getting better. I hope the supporters accept that. I understand they were not happy he didn’t play at Dundee, but that was also my decision. Virgil was not 100 per cent in his head. But now he is.

“He has said to me that he is so grateful to be at this club. Without the chance to play for Celtic, he wouldn’t be where he is today. So he is also grateful for that. There was interest in him. But it was not even close to what we are thinking about. Also, we were not interested in selling him anyway. He is one of the players we are going to build a new team around.

“He was a little bit disappointed for a couple of days after the window closed. People want things and he was thinking he had the opportunity to go to the English Premier League. But that wasn’t possible and he knows that he has a lot of challenges here as well. He is a very important player for Celtic and he has to take it as a positive. The way I saw him in training today, he has taken it fantastically well. He hasn’t said anything to me about speaking about it again in January. Again, you can never plan in football. Tomorrow, he could be injured or he could start playing fantastically and become a regular in the national team for Holland. He has things to work on. He played very well against Maribor, the standard he played was Champions League level. That’s why he was picked for Holland. So if he continues that, he will get his chances.”

On the other hand, if we have a good run through til then, with a good performance from him, he’ll be sold, with a wee round of applause from the happy-clappers.

Denayer’s a decent player, and before he came to Celtic, he’d already had some experience in the CL with Man C when Kompany was out injured I think.

I see us improving and doing well, and then, as per, being left weakened dramatically in time for the CL qualifiers next season.

PL wears a top quality life jacket, paid for by the support, and regularly re-inflated by Dermot. Ronny has a power of rowing to do.

  29. PF Ayr,

Charlie was outstanding when played in position – he’s now being asked to play in all kinds of positions, as captain, and in the games has done well until tiredness or collapse of team play has led to failure.

Then, as we’re always defending, he’s the one most obvious to the eye following the ball, as he’s in front of the defence. Don’t think it’s fair to criticise him for the poor results recently.

I’m a big fan of Efe, but he has been terrible lately, and since AC Milan has been the cause of most of the failures. He needs a break. Matthews needs a chance to recover from an injury break, but was thrown into left back etc.

It’s simples. Matthews at RB, Charlie at LB to give Izzy a much needed break .Denayer and Virgil in the centre.

Sub Lustig on at half time for AM in preparation for Thursday. Consider both on the right for Thursday, as before AM was injured, the two of them were a powerhouse down that right wing when playing together.

That’s as far as I’ll predict things with a new manager……..

No, it’s not just you, but Ronny has to deliver now that he’s got the players he wanted.

His words….“We have some good signings and I’m very happy about that. We got what we wanted and that’s fantastic.”

I fancy us to gub Aberdeen tomorrow.

    2014 isn`t over yet!!!!

I`m afraid I have no confidence in Obama.

And I say that as one who wishes U.S.A. all the best. Her stability is paramount in today`s world.

Niall Ferguson, for me ,is a star, having watched his financial history programmes.

His assessment of why U.S.A. prospered and Spanish America didn`t,I found particularly interesting. It went beyond way the nationality of the colonisers.

We all want Roni to succeed, I never saw the game against Dundee Utd, but hopefully against Aberdeen we can get back to the same form.

I do feel it will work with Roni if given time.

    MickTT,

It does indeed for a number of reasons….

The next few games will be the real test for the new management team.

I think they’ll do just fine.

Grenade launch – how will SB fit in if things gel before he’s back on track… Kayal has been outstanding in recent games.

Can only say we miss Scott Brown when he’s not playing, he’ll fit in somewhere.
