Ronny’s luxury denied to his predecessors

521

I remember writing with anticipation 10 years ago as many of Martin O’Neill’s benchwarmers came to the end of their contracts.  Martin was not a squad rotator, so those not entrusted with his confidence found themselves on the bench or in the stand on match day, there was little scope to play your way back into the squad, and the wages spent unproductively inhibited our chances of bringing in fresh talent.

Ronny Deila spoke to the media on Friday about the same issue, moving on those who are already well out of the picture, as well as some who played their part last season but who are unlikely to see much in the way of game time in the season ahead.

There’s going to be a bit of churn in the squad, we’re still likely to add three or four players, but it’s been 20 years since a Celtic manager’s talked about creating space in the squad for youth players to fill.  This isn’t a criticism of the managers we’ve had since then, more a reflection of the pressure they worked under.

Tommy Burns had to drive us from mid-table mediocrity to genuine contenders.  Wim, Dr Jo and John Barnes weren’t here long enough to concern themselves about development, which Martin made it clear from day one that his interest extended only as far as the first team squad.

I doubt any Celtic manager worked under the intensity Gordon Strachan experienced during his four years.  Every point dropped delivered a greater trauma than at any time I can remember.  Neil Lennon managed through the transition, from competing head-to-head with three-in-a-row winners Rangers, to getting used to life as the last surviving superpower.

This is Ronny’s luxury.  It doesn’t matter if we win the league by a record tally, or match the defensive records created in each of the last two seasons.  Better to lose more games while giving a chance to young talent, than ask hoary pros to grind through the same gears one more time.

Always liked going to Dunfermline, we usually won well and it was always a good atmosphere.

  5. My friends in Celtic,

Yesterday we briefly discussed the concept of ladies football being totally integrated into the Celtic football family and enhancing the match day experience.

We need to be more initiative in attracting more paying public to attend Paradise. Thinking outside of the box must be encouraged.

I remember taking my young daughter one Sunday to the Scottish Claymore’s v Amsterdam Admirals at Hampden. Frankly the game itself was imo dull, but the big attraction was Girls Aloud playing at half time.

Are we missing a trick? We have an abundance of acts that claim alignance to the Hoops. The festival season is well and truly established and acts may be amenable to playing prior to a game. Acoustics, logistics, finance and stewardship could easily be negotiated via a high profile entertainment manager.

Acts to name but a few :- Franz Ferdinand, Rod Stewart, FranHealy & Travis, Both Gallagher brothers, Simple Minds, The Artic Monkeys, Paulo Nultini etc, etc.

We all witnessed the effect of the ” One Direction ” appeal in our recent charity game.

Such short pre- match entertainment , providing correct facilities were in place would surely encourage families to drop by.

We are a unique club but our ambition is severely hampered by our league. ( for now) . Everything must be considered to enhance our match day experience, because standing still is not a long term option.

I do not advocate a return to standing, but if the fans want it and it is safe then I am glad our club is leading the UK.

Let us do the same in pre match entertainment.

    HH.

Ps : I have considered the names of acts for pre match entertainment if we ever play Sevco, but I deemed them inappropriate for a CELTIC blog.

  6. Been watching a fair bit of the coverage of the Greek problem and the on going problems with the so called Isis.

Compare and contrast Sky’s coverage with that of Aljazera an RT, can’t get the BBC, but I would imagine it’s the same as Sky.

I will stick to what imo is a more balanced view, and that’s no Sky.

Aye, it’s amazing how some folks see things re our scouting dept, I hope RD has a much bigger input that Lenny did, it seems like he has, but only time will tell.

  7. Just on the Hun signing targets again,The Record spouts this headline,

    “Former Man City player”!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    The reality is,

The 23-year-old right back quit Doncaster Rovers in the summer and has been pinpointed by Warburton.

Wabara was a former Development Squad skipper at City and had spells at Ipswich, Blackpool and Oldham before joining Rovers on a permanent contract last term.

Rangers have also secured a deal to sign 17-year-old striker Jordan Gibson from FC Alvechurch.

The upsizing goes on and on from The Record. Can you really imagine if this was us?.

  21. PFayr,

I was wondering that too when the Scottish Claymores attracted Girls Aloud.

A good sales person would sell it as we are doing them a favour, with a perfect warm up for future concerts. Especially the ones, and there are many who claim affiliation with Celtic.

If there is a will there is a way. Acts like the Waterboys have never been driven by commercialism.

We have to provide more reasons to attend CP to combat the twin threats of our league environment and the rapidly development of watching the games without actually attending.

    macjay,

The IRA fought a cold and hard war in the most recent campaign to try their utmost to achieve unity.

Surely it is the right of an occupied people to resist foreign occupation in their country?

They made mistakes, monumental ones,no denying it.

However, they did what successive British goverments denied would ever happen.

They forced them to the negotiating table and although the war isn’t won yet it will be eventually.

Sinn Fein is on the rise throughout this island and are ready for the elections in the 26 counties next year.

I think Sinn Fein as they are now have gone as far as they can

The British Govt were negotiating with IRA almost since the start of the troubles.

Why they even negotiated with people who were apparently never in the IRA,

fella called Adams you may have heard of him, well they had this poor chap in jail for no reason and they flew him to London from jail to negotiate with him as I presume a representative of the IRA,

I think he explained to them that he wasn’t a member of the IRA so the talks went no further

    Wonder whatever happened to him
