Safe Standing, great, but let’s get it right

790

Delighted for everyone involved in making Celtic the first club in Britain to be given permission to install Safe Standing facilities.  There’s time for a seat but going to the football in Scotland was largely a standing undertaking for a century, for good reason.

Standing enables the creation of football’s now too scarce atmosphere, it allows people to shuffle in the cold and sing with projection.  It’s also safer across more scenarios than sitting.

I have one (significant) problem with the plans……..

Celtic intend to install Safe Standing at the corner of the lower North and Lisbon Lions stands, including the Green Brigade’s area.  The Green Brigade pitched up at this part of the ground one League Cup game several years ago, the area was no more or less appropriate for as a singing section than any other part of the ground.

The North Stand upper is the proper place for a Safe Standing section, front and centre of the stadium.  It’s where the Jungle was, and if we’re going to come anywhere close to recreating the unique atmosphere of the Jungle in a modern stadium, we must select the appropriate area.

The Safe Standing section will have unique properties.  The ability to stand all game, bounce around and generally be more active, will ensure it sells out, but it’s unlikely to attract the infirm, and it will never be part of the family section.  It’s also not going to attract corporate business.

The decision where to locate this section is unlikely to be reversed until there is a major stadium renovation, and that’s likely to be decades away.  A couple of decades out, there will be more demand for family and infirm sections, more demand for corporate and lounge facilities.

Football spent years failing to notice how people grew fond of comfort, shelter, safe and clean facilities.  The trend is not over.  Thousands will want to stand, but perhaps more will want access to lounges, video games for the kids and shops selling all sorts.

Celtic Park is magnificent building of its time but it’s not a 21st century stadium.  The Celtic Way is genuinely stunning, but if we want to cater for fans in the decades to come we’ll need proper cafes, fan zones, bars, better toilets and a museum.  We’ll need to make use of all that land we’ve acquired, but which largely lies undeveloped.

Real estate in the lower stands will be more of a premium in the future, we should plan for it now, make the Safe Standing section the New Jungle.

Sports Direct is not a travel agents – for the avoidance of doubt.

Thanks for reposting the story re Virgil, the interview is far more balanced and nuanced than reported elsewhere. The Dutch manager may believe Holland can do without him, but the fact is they are not doing that well period, with only seven points from fifteen thus far and third in their group. Both big Frasier and Jason made it into their respective squads from Celtic, and the closest Gary Hooper got to England was when he was with us, though injury meant he missed out on a trip to Sweden. Ideal situation would be if, we qualify for CL group stage and said Dutch coach, who nearly took over at Parkhead, encouraged Virgil to stay put, and brought him into squad early doors next season. Lot of provisos there I know, fact is if he makes the right football decisions he can be a top top player, role model for whom should be Gerard Piquet. He can be that good.

Reading the Mike Ashley Rainjurs AGM statement underlines the predictable SMSM bias (if not concealment) towards GSL and Rainjurs.

The statement doesn’t reveal the fine details of the terms of the loan but it’s clear that Michael either wants the money back sharpish, or he’s screwing them into the ground, with no intention of renegotiating the terms of the loan.

I don’t think he’s too bothered about the 5M at the moment, and is more concerned with his ‘public humiliation’ after he was so kind, when they were in dire need just to remain

    deed.

Most sensible people will conclude Rainjurs clearly don’t have the money to pay back, or any intention or means to find it, including Paul Potless and his begging travels. Glib and Potless are very experienced in finding ways of not paying back money, and we have fun filled days clearly ahead, with Michael’s men including Derek “Show us the money – Mr King” Llambias’ .

  11. hats of the celtic on safe standing, should make for a more vibrant atmosphere inside celtic park. It is one of a long line of initiatives introduced to improve the supporters experience when in the ground. The celtic way again is evidence of ambition to improve the ambiance of the surrounding envious.

but there is still much to do and plenty of potential land to do it:

Problem: visitors still have piss poor provisions when they visit celtic park on match and none match days (stadium tours)

Action: invest in the proposed museum, ticket office, café the better it will be for all

Problem: out with the celtic way the look and use of space around the stadium is poor:

Action: introduce pedestrian zone around the remainder of the stadium with associated landscaping i.e. path, boundaries etc… same material as celtic way, pull the dilapidated walls down etc… new parking bays etc…

Problem: disconnect between fans and team, lack of facilities outside stadium, complaint by manager about need for indoor pitch during winter

Action: build full size indoor football pitch running the length of the jock stein stand, facility should have a small spectators area 500 – 1000 spectators, several entrances to building facing the jock stein stand, indoor supporters bar, club, fanzone area adjustable walls

used by first team during winter etc… used to hold under’s training and games in the evening

essentially bringing place to life all the time

grandiose ideas, but we must remember we are a massive club with massive support base and it is the support base that his the bread and butter

I don’t know that we can ever compete with the cash rich leagues on the field, but we sure as hell ought to be competing with them off the field

    I can dream!!!!!!

  12. While I was always surprised Ashley got involved at all, it is clear he’s there to make money.

I don’t think he has much interest in owning or controlling a football club EXCEPT for its income potential.

If he can generate a nice income flow from the periphery he’s relatively happy but if he can influence events to maximise that income he’s happier still.

King and Co and the SFA upset Big Mikes plans by inhibiting his influence and therefore his business plans. Furthermore Kings apparent traducing of Ashley has upped the anti for Big Mike. It’s not enough now just to get an income…. its important for him to be seen as a victor over King and the 3Bs. He wants to reveal how much clothing the new Emperor actually has.

Ashley can’t really loose. He still has a watertight commercial deal…with security or otherwise but King can be a big and embarrassed loser. His credibility with the hoards would be completely shot. If that happens TRFC would be even more desperate for funding…who could they turn to?

I see short term shame for the GSL and the club he part owns with resulting confusions on the field of play.

    BUT…

If Ashley wins he will see greater income potential in a successful club and he has the business accumen to deliver.

Be careful of what you wish for…
