Scott Brown, Great Scottish Runner

875

You seldom hear football people speak as unguardedly as Peter Grant did to The Herald yesterday about Scott Brown.  “If somebody had offered us £4m (in 2010)?  I would have driven him down the road myself”.  The tone of Peter’s piece was supportive, though.  Our former assistant manager affirms Scott is a vastly improved performer since.  I agree.

You never really know what is going on inside a squad.  Footballers play with injuries, many find the distractions of wealth all-consuming and some are simply deployed incorrectly.  At the #19 game last week I recalled the form of Stiliyan Petrov under John Barnes, he was lost, especially when playing right back.  Bobby Petta also looked out of sorts under Barnes but within weeks of playing for Martin O’Neill both were among the most valuable assets at the club.

Neil Lennon told us last week that Scott Brown was unfit during last season’s Champions League campaign.  It’s clear that he is an incredibly more effective player when fit, but Peter Grant suggests Brown has also learned positional discipline, a subject he has previously been criticised here for.

A lot of Scott’s contribution is off the ball.  He closes space, filling the park with a presence, which is defensively important, especially on Champions League duty.  I’ve never seen Celtic’s yardage stats on players but you have to think he’ll top the list most weeks, he is the Great Scottish Runner, but all that energy needed to be harnessed correctly, which is perhaps what Scott is learning from former midfielder, Neil Lennon.

The next achievement to look out for from Scott is a marquee performance on a European stage………

Which leads us onto the Great Scottish Run.  You can still sign up for the run, and if you’ve registered already, or are still to register, you can participate in the 1254125 campaign.

The heart and soul of our community is something we cannot take for granted.  It has flourished because you, and countless thousands before you, have decided to improve the lives of those around you by getting involved in the name of Celtic.

On Sunday 6 October there is a 10k and Half Marathon.  If that is beyond you. There are family events taking place the day before.

The first thing you need to do is sign up for the Great Scottish Run, or here for one of the family events.

Once you’ve done that, you can register for the 1254125 campaign here.

Then you can create a donations page here.  Click Start Fundraising, search for Celtic Charity, setup your My Donate account).

  6. Good words, Burnley78.

Watching that borefest from Old Trafford last night makes you appreciate just how special these Champions League nights are for a club like ours, the excitement levels will be x 100 of what we saw last night.

Non events like last night are the down side of UEFA’s CL strategy, teams like Man U, Chelsea etc. EXPECT to be in the knockout stages, the Group phase is just a necessary chore that nobody gets excited about- unless they find themselves in trouble.

We, on the other hand, have a ticket for the 6 white knuckle rides in the fun park.

(Between this and the weekly EPL borefest, WHAT EXACTLY is there to enjoy about the world best league?)

  7. Thanks for the Lubo moments.

I remember when he signed. It was not a popular signing amongst a large portion of the support. Unfortunately Lubo arrived at a time when the 3 Amigos had departed and the support was at war with Jock Brown, who had just “traded” Di Canio.

Celtic were at home to Dundee on the Saturday after Lubo was signed. I was in the Supporters Association pre-game and the general mood was one of revolt. I remember a few supporters writing off Lubo with words like, “We lose Di Canio and end up with an old man nobody has heard of.”

To be fair, it was hard to argue with those sentiments.

Brown didn’t stay much longer after that and as for Lubo, the rest is history.

    What a player.

    What a hun-skelper.

    1-1 draw tonight.

Thanks for posting that old Lubo story — I have been saying for ages that I will work on another one and maybe that has just given me the impetus to get on with it.

    Good point well made.

As I watched the flat atmosphere at Old Trafford on live TV this morning, I thought to myself . . . this is now just routine for these supporters. CL nights are really nothing special to them.

Contrast that atmosphere to Celtic Park in a couple of weeks. There is no comparison.

Fellow Celtic men n wummin, this is my final day in the free Zadoc the Priest ringtone business ( theres just no future in it for me) but I’ve still to achieve the goal of brining this to 500 Cetlic phones. The count is currently sitting at 486 leaving 14 lonely tones still requiring a good hun free phone.

C’mon guy’s bring these wee Zadoc files home before our CL campaign kicks off in earnest tonight.

Get right under the skin of those huns around you by blaring out ZTP every time you take a call. Why not leave your phone on your desk and call yourself, it gets right on their raspberry ripples……………………….so it duz.

Yes the reaction to Lubo’s signing was highly critical in some quarters of the support, thanks in no small part to the fact we depended on Newspapers, Radio and TV for our “facts.” I salute my younger brother, Tony, who at the time pointed to his record for Czechoslovakia and Slovakia – around 60 caps when he joined us. Clearly, despite what the papers were saying, no mug.

    …………………………………………….

Picinisco/Tom the most pleasing aspect of the 5-1 game for me was travelling home and listening to the BBC pundits spluttering for excuses for their failed predictions, because before the game they had slaughtered Dr Joe and his signings and the usual team of Gordon Smith and Co were helped out by their very own fifth-columnist, Craig Burley!

From memory when asked what Lubo was like as a player he said something along the lines of “he can do tricks with a ball in practice matches but the game is played on a Saturday” and when pushed he said “he is a £350? thousand player and you get what you pay for”!

The injured multi-million pound Burley was, and still is a bitter man where Celtic are concerned.

    I wonder why?

  14. Good morning from an overcast Nordrhein Westfalen. Getting excited about tonight’s game, I don’t expect us to come away with anything tonight but we’re talking Celtic here. I only hope Milan defend as badly as Bayer Leverkusen, I was shocked by it, and maybe we’ll nick something. The beauty of it is that we are considered to be the whipping boys of this group and there is only one way you can go from that position. So onwards and upwards Celtic.

ACGR , PMSL good luck with those last 14 ringtones. The only person round here, today, to listen to it will be myself, even the wife is away and she’s a Tim.

Totally agree. OT didn’t even look full last night. What I’ve seen from the EPL so far this year has been pretty dire as well.

No chance an English winner this year and I’d be surprised if any of their teams make it past the quarters.

  20. Great words about Lubo, boy do I miss him, he was worth the ticket money on his own – a footballing genius. I thought in the #19 Petrov game he looked like he could still do a job in the SPL – mind you so did half the Celtic team. Wonder if Pires has got rid of that Bobo-shaped dent yet!

  24. Compare and contrast:

In snooker, a player is disciplined. Ronnie O’Sullivan says that he knows tons of players who do the same thing. The media gets involved and the governing body tells him to name names or he will be up on a charge himself.

In football, a player is disciplined. Ally McCoist says that he knows tons of players who do the same thing. The media and the governing body do nothing.
