Scottish football needs crisis

882

It was only in February this year that the proposed Russia-Ukraine joint league first reached the stage of formal meetings between clubs to discuss the viability but tonight a showcase tournament between top clubs from each country gets underway tonight.  It is hoped the formal joint league will start this time next year when the top nine teams from each country will form the Unified First League.

Despite discouragement from Fifa, Uefa have insisted only that proper procedures are followed to give their ascent to the league.  Gazprom, the Russian energy giant and Uefa Champions League sponsor, has underwritten the project with a commitment of 1 billion euros per annum.

As we know, in football, money talks, and the Russian and Ukrainian clubs, together with their national associations and Uefa, have been talked happy to make change possible.

In order to become competitive with their rivals in the west while meeting Uefa Financial Fair Play rules, Russian and Ukrainian clubs need to increase income, which the Unified First League would go a long way towards.  Uefa president, Michel Platini, has long accepted that regionalisation was a viable way forward for domestic leagues, while former powers in smaller leagues have become disenfranchised from the game’s top table.

What does it mean for us?

Well, we don’t have a Gazprom, not yet, anyway, but once Gazprom’s financial and political muscle establishes the principle of regionalisation, that principle is available to all.  Former Yugoslavia countries are already in talks, while Scandinavian countries have already had a few abortive attempts at (underfunded) regional cup competitions.

The British region.

Welsh football has managed to retain its national identity, provide an infrastructure for provincial and community clubs, while federating with the FA in England to allow their larger (sic) clubs to find their competitive level.

The model is already established for Scottish football, which has realised living with one (or two for that matter) massive club which completely invalidates their league competition as a ‘competition’ is no longer the best way to order their affairs.

Financial recklessness caused the collapse of one club a year ago while the recklessness of a Lithuanian bank has put another in jeopardy.  A handful of other top-flight clubs now realise their financial commitments, not to mention sporting objectives, are no longer viable, with or without the crumbs from the table thrown in their direction when TV cameras and a few thousand fans arrive a few times per season.

Federate with England, just as the Welsh did.  It will bring ‘competition’ back to our competitions, put thousands of everyone’s gates and provide access to viable commercial contracts.

Why are our leagues and Association not speaking to the English about this right now?  The Football League in England is every bit as much a basket case as Scottish football right now, they also need to change the structural model and, unlike the equally lunatic (English) Premier League, appear to be self-aware in this respect.

Go talk to the Welsh FA, Cardiff City, Swansea, Wrexham or New Saints FC (!) and ask them what organising their game along the lines of the Scottish model would do to them.

Scottish football must federate or it will die.  As such, if we stand on the precipice of crisis, let’s make it a good one.  It’s the only thing which will get things moving.

    Support Canamalar1’s action.

I am. If nothing else comes of it at least our board will know they are under severe scrutiny.

We at least deserve to know what the club’s position is regarding the SFA and their duplicity. We also deserve to know if they continue to see our club having a symbiotic relationship with the new club at Ibrox.

If Canamalar gets answers to the questions he’s asking, all Celtic supporters, season ticket holders and shareholders will know where they stand and can make their own minds up thereafter.

  17. Morrissey the 23rd on

Almost three years ago I told Maggie, ‘The Huns are going to go bust’. I was excited. He calmly replied, ‘Do you really think so? It will never be allowed to happen and even if they did. They’d change the rules to stop it.’ ‘No really!’ I said. ‘They will be liquidated. Gone.’ He told me I could correct him if that happened but Scotland would never allow that to happen. The SFA wouldn’t allow it. They would be bailed out by the government if need be. I said the Celtic support would never accept that. They’d fight it and get justice. He told me they’d be faithful through and through. Rangers would be reinstated and to stop being so fuckin stoopid.

Awe naw had given me a similar reaction not long before. I thought to myself. These are smart guys. They post on CQN all the time. How do I know what they don’t know? It was because they knew what I didn’t. The levels that Scottish society at every level would go to for their club and the apathy of the Scottish supporters.

Give Canamalar1 support for the action he is asking from you. Don’t look back with regret that you watched our game become just entertainment.. Remember how you wanted justice and equality. Is that what has happened? Does that look like what is going to happen? Excuse the Braveheart speech but it is important that we do what we can before it’s too late, if we aren’t already too late. Even if that means challenging the custodians of our club to question if they are doing all they can for our club. Doing what they can for justice, equality and the integrity of our club.

Zispin’s a cracker. Always leads to the more expensive version. Mirtazapine. Impossible for the patient to give up as symptoms are aggression and depression.

Aye, great drug for our diligent GPs to be dispensing to young folk suffering from …depression.

Thank feck Hollyoaks is there to save our youth from misery and the rozzers are there to stop them depressing themselves with failed ideas of peaceful protest.

“It’s best to take Zispin Soltab 45 mg as a single dose before you go to bed, as it will probably help you sleep.”

  19. FFM –

I asked a simple question of Canamalar . . . was he serious about suggesting that shareholders report the club to the police? You describe my question/comment as nonsense, then answer it by saying he was talking “tongue in cheek*. That was all I asked. I wasn’t attacking Canamalar or anyone else.

    Thanks for your response.

  20. GCT,

You seem to be implying I attacked you whereas I thought I was developing the debate.

Yet again, baffled by your response at the reactions to your naieve criticisms of other posts.

  21. Agree with Maggie. Anyone who takes an objective look at the evidence, both the circumstantial and the factual, can come to only one conclusion. Scottish Fitba is dominated by free market principles, not those as expressed by Adam Smith, and a level playing field, more the rigged system of The City, Wall St and the Establishment. Who were the only creditors to secure their money, The Black Horse of course… And they did so quickly and relatively discreetly. The Knight of the Realm has been airbrushed out of the equation in this sorry mess. The administrators of the game? Shameless. The media? Shameless.

This has nothing to do with sport. It has everything to do with power, money, greed and malfeasance. It also has everything to do with the free reign bankers have over our lives. The Mint and his banking cohorts were too arrogant and left with arses oot after events in 2008, what is wrongly referred to as the Credit Crunch. They are laughing all the way from the bank.

It is not sport. It is business of a shady sort….. But it is something more profound to supporters. It is about culture and identity. It is also the great pacifier of more atavistic instincts, the pressure valve allowing the safe, controlled venting of those instincts and emotions via the crowd. It is also a Distractor from social, economic and political scandals that would otherwise be expressed via The Crowd. Banking, politics and Fitba have crashed together into a giant screw up.

I always viewed the game to be tilted slightly. I was not paranoid, simply not naive. I could deal with that tilt. It made Celtic winning all the sweeter. The current shambles and the twisting, turning, denial and outright lies is no longer even worth a joke. Unlike Kojo, I am not still laughing…

  22. FFM –

I did not imply you were attacking me. The only time I used that word was to say I wasn’t attacking Canamalar.

You described the post in which I asked the question as “annoying nonsense” and now “naive”.

As I say, all I did was ask a question, and I believe I put the question in a rational and reasonable way.

    I certainly wasn’t looking for a fight.

  23. GCT,

I’m lost then. Was my original point, in response to your question at canamalar, not clear?

Feel free to quote it in its entirety rather than taking parts out of context! Why the feck do people do that and deflect from discussion they purport to be engaging in ?!?

  24. GCT-

let me put it another way, in your own style.

Do you seriously believe canamalar is advising shareholders to dial 999 if they don’t get the answer they want at the main reception of CP? Seriously ????

    McCoist Admits Embargo Juggling Act

Ally McCoist has admitted that he and his coaching staff will face a juggling act with our new signings as we attempt to use them as trialists in games.

Speaking to the Official Site with so many new signings not eligible to be registered officially until September 1 because of the embargo Rangers are under, namely – Cammy Bell, Jon Daly, Nicky Law, Nicky Clark, Arnold Peralta, Stevie Smith and Richard Foster – McCoist can use them as trialists but their appearances are limited under that status.

Prior to official registration Rangers face 8 games (4 league, 2 Ramsdens, 2 League Cup) where the club can only play two trialists, and each trialist will be limited to three appearances in total.

‘Once the cup draws are made we will have to plan what we are going to do in each match. It won’t just be a case of playing two strikers in one game and then two midfielders in another. We will need to work out what the best plan is.’

Certainly going to be interesting to see how they approach it, as on the same token, you want all our new signings match fit and match sharp for when they do become available properly.
