Selling players correctly is trickier than it looks

In the immediate aftermath of defeat in Turin our manager was magnanimous towards his opponents, the television broadcaster and his players. Sky TV were thanked for their treatment of Celtic (note to others), Juventus were encouraged to win the Champions League, and Neil acknowledged some players may want to further their careers beyond Scotland.

Let’s be clear, most of the squad are happy at Celtic.  Georgios Samaras could go anywhere in Europe but this Celtic team is his project, as much as it is yours or mine.  Many of the others, including Matthews, Wilson, Lustig, Forster, Mulgrew, Commons, Ledley, Forrest and Izaguirre are settled at Celtic with plenty still to achieve.

Hooper and Wanyama have declined contract offers, so will be most likely to leave in the summer, but in the business Celtic are in right now, if they go, who they go to, is important.    If we lose players to tier-one clubs it will make attracting others a whole lot easier.  If you are a stepping stone to Barcelona, as with Larsson, you are a far more attractive employer than if you lose a striker to Norwich City (I’m friendly with a former Nigerian international who went on trial to Hamilton Accies the week after, and on the strength of, Brian Easton leaving there for the English Premier League).

Selling right makes it easier to buy who you want.  Got to get the right price, keep them for the Champions League qualifiers, and make sure you sell to the right club.

See you at 7.30pm tonight at the Supporters’ Association Club on London Road for the Twists & Turns Celtic Supporters Club charity night.  There will be Question and Answer session with me, John Fallon, Dixie Deans, Archie MacPherson, compared by Phil Agnew.  Afterwards you can enjoy music from Foggy Dew.

Tickets are £10 and you can get them from Phil by calling 07811 178764.  Profits are going to the Tommy Burns charity.

  1. Given the same game time and opportunities as Hooper, Anthony Stokes will score more goals. Tony Watt will also score more as he gets more chances. When Hooper leaves I’d be more inclined to look for a creative attacking midfielder than another striker, providing we’ve still got Stokes and Watt.

    Yes -they do research Referees…

They changed their style at Celtic Park. —-they defended much deeper than normal.. Early gifted goal changed everything.

Current mantra is -the priority is Serie A —–we are not one of the favorites for the CL but we’ll give it a go . Heard Conte and Buffon on the radio yesterday —- wee bit of banter re whether they were 5th or 6th favorites

  3. Mort, I think we need to segment goalscoring with regards to the competition. League goals and Euro goals are the key for me. Scoring 5 against Hearts doesn’t equate to 1 v Juve eg.

  4. Interesting statistics Mort, it shows how effective Hoops is if he has only been outshot by those players. Would Kenny Miller have bagged that opening goal against the Russkies at CP?…I seriously doubt it.

GARY HOOPER, bit of a Celtic legend.

  5. Eurochamps67 on

Matri was on the left wing, outside Adam, when Hooper was dispossessed on Wednesday.

When his strike partner, Q, shaped to shoot, Matri had left Adam, looped around Q and was on hand in the 6 yard box to tap in FF’s parry.

    That’s a striker.

Would Hoops have shown so much?

Gary is average, decent enough for SPL, very good at times, when he is up for it. I would much rather have him rather than others, but a major signing target, I doubt it.

Miller would probably have scored the one Hooper missed against Juve

Hooper is a good player …not a great player and should be signing another contract with us to allow him to develop further …

  7. When all is said and done, Hooper came up here to further his career, and earn a few quid while he’s at it. We bought a player who we knew would score goals, and hopefully increase his sell-on value.

Seems to me that everyone’s a winner

If you do go Gary, thanks for your efforts and good luck!

“Confirmed cheating and partiality in favour of RFC …totally unacceptable”

I agree. But Celtic alone can’t take on the SFA under the circumstances.

And there is no point at all in resigning from the league until we have somewhere to go. That move would finish our club rather than Scottish football.

The club has issued a statement and Neil Lennon has commented publically on the matter. So Celtic have not been entirely silent.

Unfortunately we are limited to what we can do alone – this whole thing has been handled in a way that ensures that, but hopefully discreet moves involving Celtic and other clubs are on the agenda.

You are right to say that NONE of the 1000 ‘walks’ in Scotland is a CATHOLIC walk.

Not ONE, as far as I know.

You did though remind me of my childhood in the 1940′s when Fr.Michael Ward (later of St Mary’s in the Calton) was the PP at OHR in Clydebank & every year organised a huge procession from Dalmuir Park along the main road to the ‘chapel’, a distance of about 1.5 miles. The entire parish turned out. Led by pipe bands, every school in the area & every Catholic organization & every parishoner took part in what was an eagerly awaited event each summer. There was of course no trouble & it was respectfully policed by the local ‘plod’, at the front & back of the possibly thousands of walkers.

I can not remember any opposition being voiced to the event.

Fr.Ward also raised money throughout the year & took every school-child on a FREE trip to Saltcoats each Summer, which would be the ONLY trip of any description that most youngsters would ever experience in those harsh days.

    Great memories.

Rest in Peace, Fr. Michael Ward.

Never mind selling players correctly and being trickier than it looks, the trickiest thing next season will be making up the blurb that’s going to get season tickets shifted. Me for one will be pursuing the club to offer half season tickets running from August until December as like this season the league will be over more or less by Christmas. As for cup games from january onwards I will buy these on an individual basis

Ps Now hearing 600 failed to gain entry to the stadium on Wednesday night and circa 15:30 hours at Glasgow airport yesterday a great deal of shrugging of shoulders from club officials

A wonderfull season by the the club, but Unfortunately we have 3 qualifying rounds due to corporate mismanagement by our CEO over the 3 years before

    ———————————————-

Sydney Tim, our co-efficient and subsequently the amount of qualifiers we need to go through are not solely down to how we (Celtic) have performed. Granted ,Celtics results in Europe in recent seasons have been poor, but by far the greater effect is the consistent lack of any sort of progress at all by every other Scottish club who plays in Europe each season.

Whatever co-efficient points are earned by all teams are divided by the amount of participants from that country, so effectively Celtic would be better off if they themselves were the only Scottish representatives in European competition. Clearly this is not going to happen, therefore other teams who qualify need to pull their weight, or at least get past part-timers from Iceland / Faroes and the like!

I think we also need to appreciate the prudent plan that PL and NL are undertaking with regard to ‘the way forward’ and this is beginning to bear fruit now.

Whatever way it’s dressed up, what the sfa were involved in was corperate fraud, theft from other parties allowing one club to benefit.

With the information that is in the public domain, they could be sued easily, all it would take is a few shareholders to do it, with the clubs silent backing, the club could take a back seat.
