Selling players correctly is trickier than it looks

In the immediate aftermath of defeat in Turin our manager was magnanimous towards his opponents, the television broadcaster and his players. Sky TV were thanked for their treatment of Celtic (note to others), Juventus were encouraged to win the Champions League, and Neil acknowledged some players may want to further their careers beyond Scotland.

Let’s be clear, most of the squad are happy at Celtic.  Georgios Samaras could go anywhere in Europe but this Celtic team is his project, as much as it is yours or mine.  Many of the others, including Matthews, Wilson, Lustig, Forster, Mulgrew, Commons, Ledley, Forrest and Izaguirre are settled at Celtic with plenty still to achieve.

Hooper and Wanyama have declined contract offers, so will be most likely to leave in the summer, but in the business Celtic are in right now, if they go, who they go to, is important.    If we lose players to tier-one clubs it will make attracting others a whole lot easier.  If you are a stepping stone to Barcelona, as with Larsson, you are a far more attractive employer than if you lose a striker to Norwich City (I’m friendly with a former Nigerian international who went on trial to Hamilton Accies the week after, and on the strength of, Brian Easton leaving there for the English Premier League).

Selling right makes it easier to buy who you want.  Got to get the right price, keep them for the Champions League qualifiers, and make sure you sell to the right club.

See you at 7.30pm tonight at the Supporters’ Association Club on London Road for the Twists & Turns Celtic Supporters Club charity night.  There will be Question and Answer session with me, John Fallon, Dixie Deans, Archie MacPherson, compared by Phil Agnew.  Afterwards you can enjoy music from Foggy Dew.

Tickets are £10 and you can get them from Phil by calling 07811 178764.  Profits are going to the Tommy Burns charity.

Lustig is injured and Fraser is out for the rest of the season. Watt got injured the day before the Juventus game, so I doubt he’d be ready tomorrow. I’d go with:

    Who said the following?

Any club that is spending more on players than they can afford, is automatically gaining a sporting advantage over every other club it competes with.

    My emphasis.

I wonder if this person would agree that spending so much that you go out of business, which would imply more than you could afford, would be “automatically gaining a sporting advantage”. I am inclined to think the answer would be yes.

Never trust a gambler who boasts about how much he has won but never admits to how much he has lost in the winning. Never trust a poster who boasts about predictions that come to fruition and yet neglects to remind you of the multitude of previous predictions that time proved to be less than a crock.

Never trust a poster who comes on to a public forum boasting how big his dick is either. Would you really trust a stranger who offered to flop it out to prove a point. Now that is a game of blind brag and possibly an arrestable offence.

re. midfield. Kayal – what to say? I so wish he was good, then you and I could be reconciled! fwiw he played very well v Juventus imo, but he hasn’t demonstrated anything beyond being a bit tousy and ‘up for it’. Time to give others a chance, especially Mcgeouch, who can play CM, and Paddy, one of our few elegant pasers of a ball, who has been unjustifiably ridiculed, while Kayal has been given chance after second chance.

But Kayal will get the berth. He is a ‘project’, while Paddy is just an honest pro, happy to be a bit part player.

Celtic First- I asked the other day, is Nimmo Smith qualified to say a football team did not have a “sporting advantage”. He might not know one end of a football from another.Does he have any background or qualifications in football?

    ……………………………..

Baba Bing Nimmo Smith went to Eton and Oxford where football is not the first choice sport.

For those youngsters who wonder where the “Nimmo the Dimmo” title came from, it happened this way.

Back in 1992, the Prime Minister of the day, John Major asked the Lord Advocate to appoint a team to investigate allegations of a conspiracy to pervert the course of justice arising from the Orr Report, report prepared by Lothian and Borders Police Force for the Chief Constable at the behest of Tam Dalyell MP.

The Orr Report was not for public consumption, but while in a safe in the Fettes, Edinburgh Police HQ, a break in took place and it was stolen.

The theft was so embarrassing that the police offered an amnesty for the burglar if they would return the documents.

The burglar did not do this, but instead sold the report to the press.

It transpired that the burglar was a well-known criminal and police informant named Derek Donaldson, but he did not stop at the burglary and went on to pose as a journalist by having business cards printed to show that he was a reporter employed by the Daily Telegraph by the name of Alan MacDonald.

Alan MacDonald (Donaldson) then telephoned William Nimmo Smith, QC who, within weeks, was due to release his report to the Prime Minister, and the Westminster parliament, asking to meet him.

Nimmo Smith agreed and Donaldson visited him at his home where he talked freely about the report, all of which Donaldson recorded surreptitiously before selling the tape to the Sun.

The following day the Sun ran with an article entitled: “Fettes ‘Thief’ cons Gay Judges Probe QC” and inside the paper carried the article linked below:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/scottishlawreporter/5782657590/in/photostream/

The “Nimmo the Dimmo” front page appeared the following day:

    http://scottishlaw.blogspot.co.uk/2012/02/scottish-football-assoc-appoint-lord.html

Nimmo-Smith invited a burglar, a convicted criminal, who he had never met before, into his house and discussed highly confidential matters with him for an hour, so he must be a very trusting soul.

Eton and Oxford educated Nimmo Smith is a real gentleman and he obviously thinks that everyone else is like him and this may explain how he accepted that Sandy Bryson and Campbell Ogilvie were telling the truth about player registration at the SFA.

We are under no such illusions about the SFA – we see Flashman where NS sees Tom Brown – and unless we get things sorted out we may as well forget football in this country.

Paddy central from now on in is something that should be looked at.

  24. Paul67

Another great lead post. They have all been particularly good over the last few days and I am glad to be talking about Celtic again. I have said it for years and I will say it again…. There are more ghuys like Henke (ok maybe not AS good!) out there we just have to find them.

And by that big Sammi is another, not in the same league as Henrik, although it would have been good to see them play together. What I mean though is how Sammi has endeared himself to the club, especially after the mostly unfair abuse he got, some still cant wait to stick the boot in. Sammi is not in it for the money, Sammi LOVES the Celtic

If players leave us for any club that has a genuine chance of winning the big cup and/or their domestic league, then fair enough. To me that reason is ambition. If they go to a league wher at best they can hope for is a good cup run, at worst a relegation dogfight, they are doing it purely for the money. I dont want these type of players at Celtic. Thank them for their time and move them on. I want players at Celtic who WANT to play for Celtic, pure and simple. These young men, as most of them are need to get real about the money they ARE earning, not what they can get elsewhere. Who would not bite my hand off right now if I told them they were good enough to play, at the highest level, with us, a chance to really really build a side that aginst all odds could go really far in Europe, to become a hero, a legend AND be paid 5 /10 / 20k A WEEK??……A WEEK for playing football!!!! it’s incredulous.

I would love Vic to stay. He has the showings of it all for me. He can sit deep, defend, push on, score goals…with his head…long range shots….he can pass AND he at 21 has the physique too. Stay with us Vic, sign a new contract so we are not done out of the money we deserve (in this crazy inflated market) for you. Stay on next season and see how you feel after we reach the last 8 because I really think we will if we keep this squad. See how you feel then? If you still want to go or we haven’t matched your (footballing) ambition, then fair enough.” But can you imagine big man, can you imagine in 2 or 3 years time being the captain of Celtic (sorry broonie) and lifting that big CUP with 67 on your back?? Now that’s a dream…… pity you weren’t from the Calton!!

If he is going and for the reasons stated above the bidding should be started at £30 million. If he was playing for West ham, Bolton, Newcastle, Norwich (no offence to any of they teams btw) That is what would be getting thrown around. Look at henderson and carrol at liverpool and they other young players that went for huge money a few years back in england… the names elude me.

Last but not least – anyone who is getting on the Efe bomb scare wagon or Joe (5goals in 8games) Ledley needs to have a word with themselves…. Was MOTM the other night Kelvin not a bomb scare??? Forster not good enough??? Seriously ghuys sort it out. Back the team, support them all this is real life not football manager. I support every player who plays for the hoops. Encourage them, praise them, treat them like you would your son, brother cousin if it were him playing and not them. The CELTIC family deserves the same respect and Lenny is the head of that family.

IF he supports them…. That is more than good enough for me.
