Selling players correctly is trickier than it looks

In the immediate aftermath of defeat in Turin our manager was magnanimous towards his opponents, the television broadcaster and his players. Sky TV were thanked for their treatment of Celtic (note to others), Juventus were encouraged to win the Champions League, and Neil acknowledged some players may want to further their careers beyond Scotland.

Let’s be clear, most of the squad are happy at Celtic.  Georgios Samaras could go anywhere in Europe but this Celtic team is his project, as much as it is yours or mine.  Many of the others, including Matthews, Wilson, Lustig, Forster, Mulgrew, Commons, Ledley, Forrest and Izaguirre are settled at Celtic with plenty still to achieve.

Hooper and Wanyama have declined contract offers, so will be most likely to leave in the summer, but in the business Celtic are in right now, if they go, who they go to, is important.    If we lose players to tier-one clubs it will make attracting others a whole lot easier.  If you are a stepping stone to Barcelona, as with Larsson, you are a far more attractive employer than if you lose a striker to Norwich City (I’m friendly with a former Nigerian international who went on trial to Hamilton Accies the week after, and on the strength of, Brian Easton leaving there for the English Premier League).

Selling right makes it easier to buy who you want.  Got to get the right price, keep them for the Champions League qualifiers, and make sure you sell to the right club.

See you at 7.30pm tonight at the Supporters’ Association Club on London Road for the Twists & Turns Celtic Supporters Club charity night.  There will be Question and Answer session with me, John Fallon, Dixie Deans, Archie MacPherson, compared by Phil Agnew.  Afterwards you can enjoy music from Foggy Dew.

Tickets are £10 and you can get them from Phil by calling 07811 178764.  Profits are going to the Tommy Burns charity.

  3. Hi Paul67,

“Hooper and Wanyama have declined contract offers, so will be most likely to leave in the summer, but in the business …………… If you are a stepping stone to Barcelona, as with Larsson, you are a far more attractive employer than if you lose a striker to Norwich City…….

Now during Sooper Hooper’s purple patch in December I suggested that we sell him in the January window and buy a striker better equiped to face Juve.

Don’t care if it was Norwich or what…..

    I was correct!

    Simples!

    Hail! Hail!

PeteC – great post you put up last night on the video that showed to want a fairer system is not socialism but just a fairer system!!! Can you repost??

Also have you ever read the book The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists?? It was written about life in the building game in 1906 by robert Tressell….. If not a great read and the way the Money trick was explained in that book was similar. In the book he also has a chart of the professions of the distribution. If memory serves right he has royalty, bankers, lords etc in the same category as the unemployed…. ie they contribute zada. Difference with them is they take the lions share!!

Not sure about that. They certainly play football at Eton, and, along with the other leading public schools in England, were instrumental in developing the game.

I wasn’t talking about short-termism really, more the old chestnut of managers having favourites.

Mcgeouch, for me, is a RM but has also looked good at RWB. Paddy anywhere for me is a reason to buy a ticket.

Been laid up this week with the flu, lots of sleep, hot drinks, paracetamol and CQN when I’m awake. In my view, one of the features that makes CQN such a fascinating (Celtic) site is the inevitable and numerous happy clapper / mineshafter confrontations, take them away and all we are left with (no disrespect to anyone intended) is a load of podium chasers posting self indulgent drivel. So OK I’m being selfish here, but please let’s not bully harass or attempt to chase away anyone who’s views are diametrically opposed to your own, different opinions, CQN needs lots of them, well at least until this blasted flu clears up.

I don’t know if anybody saw the start of the 6 O’Clock News on the BBC with further allegations about the church (including a shot of the altar at St Aloysius in Garnethill and , I think, a similar shot of the altar at the Sacred Heart in Edinburgh). No wish to underplay the seriousness of the allegations or the revulsion they provoke but for the BBC it really did seem a remarkably thin piece factually.

I’m with you all the way, I really want Celtic Men playing in the first team.

Unfortunately we will have to make do with dudes (currently) who are using Celtic as a stepping stone to the BPL.

That bhoy Henryk didnae dae too bad staying with us for the majority of his career. There is a lesson there.

I suppose the extension of Phil’s lawyer friend’s argument would be that a group of shareholders of a club that lost out as a result of Oldco’s cheating could take out a class action?

Good post, is Fergus still a shareholder?

  17. You have a great ‘big picture’ view P67. Never would have come up with that, post Turin, meself and as ever you cheer me up in your own way as bsr does often. However, last night I was a bit pished and and listened to Kate Bush and I thank cqn for getting me through that, but tonight it’s Enya !

A “pro eligendo Romano Pontifice” Mass will be celebrated in St. Peter’s Basilica that morning. In the afternoon, the cardinals will enter into the Conclave.

  21. Just watched Reporting Scotland and its rubbish sport slot. Fair enough starting with the rugby but who gives a flying one that Ally Mccoist agrees with Charles Grimm about anything. A short snippet about Celtic and then a snippet about Hibs attempt to resign Kevin Thomson. Illustrated of course by by said Thomson scoring one of his few goals for Zombie FC

  27. Could someone help me out…

When I get a chance I put BBC Scotland on for the news, so I can see reporting Scotland.

Mainly on the background, sometimes you pick up some snippets.

Now just before the sport I got a phone call.

Being auld school – I muted the sound.

Now then we had Mr McCoist’s slimed faced transposed on the R@ngers Badge

Followed by what looked like NL at a press conference.

Followed by TRFC scoring a goal against Motherwell.

Now a precis would be nice, but why a TRFC goal is NEWs would enlightening.

Unless of course it’s the usual….
