Selling players correctly is trickier than it looks

In the immediate aftermath of defeat in Turin our manager was magnanimous towards his opponents, the television broadcaster and his players. Sky TV were thanked for their treatment of Celtic (note to others), Juventus were encouraged to win the Champions League, and Neil acknowledged some players may want to further their careers beyond Scotland.

Let’s be clear, most of the squad are happy at Celtic.  Georgios Samaras could go anywhere in Europe but this Celtic team is his project, as much as it is yours or mine.  Many of the others, including Matthews, Wilson, Lustig, Forster, Mulgrew, Commons, Ledley, Forrest and Izaguirre are settled at Celtic with plenty still to achieve.

Hooper and Wanyama have declined contract offers, so will be most likely to leave in the summer, but in the business Celtic are in right now, if they go, who they go to, is important.    If we lose players to tier-one clubs it will make attracting others a whole lot easier.  If you are a stepping stone to Barcelona, as with Larsson, you are a far more attractive employer than if you lose a striker to Norwich City (I’m friendly with a former Nigerian international who went on trial to Hamilton Accies the week after, and on the strength of, Brian Easton leaving there for the English Premier League).

Selling right makes it easier to buy who you want.  Got to get the right price, keep them for the Champions League qualifiers, and make sure you sell to the right club.

See you at 7.30pm tonight at the Supporters’ Association Club on London Road for the Twists & Turns Celtic Supporters Club charity night.  There will be Question and Answer session with me, John Fallon, Dixie Deans, Archie MacPherson, compared by Phil Agnew.  Afterwards you can enjoy music from Foggy Dew.

Tickets are £10 and you can get them from Phil by calling 07811 178764.  Profits are going to the Tommy Burns charity.

  1. Ross county v Celtic, Saturday 9th March kick-off 3pm.

    3pm!?

What kind of crazy random time for a senior football match kick-off is that in this day and age?!?

At the same time, exactly the same time The Rangers play Anal Athletic at the crumbling Mordor. Ra Ainly Show In Toon.

It’s a conspiracy to keep the crowd in Dingwall small…

  2. After watching Juventus in both games against Celtic, I must say they were flattered by the 5-0 eventual aggregate scoreline and quite frankly I’m not convinced that the Italians will win the Champions League. We all know the folly of playing a man probably suffering from jetlag arriving on the morning of the match and the outcome. Celtic opened up these guys on numerous occasions but did not punish them.

I flicked between Sky and RTE and the big talking point in particular with John Giles, Dunphy, Ronnie Whelan and Ray Houghton was the probability of Neil Lennon losing some of his best young players and being unable to build on the success of this season, the atmosphere was considerably downbeat and depressing.

Celtic have been quite successful in Europe this decade and it’s a bizarre situation that the club as probably league Champions has to play three qualifying rounds to make the group stages.

So the Mynah Bird now reckons that NFL will not be Celtic manager after this season.

Tell you what I will do with you, Kojo.

I will bet you now that Neil WILL be the Celtic manager at this same time next year.

    Quite simple really.

I will bet you 1000 of your American Dollars, or £ or Euro if you prefer, that our manager is still exactly where he is now at this time next year.

I am happy for us both to lodge the money with Paul67 & for the losers’ money to go to Wee Oscar, or any other CQN charity of YOUR choice.

Is that challenge simple enough for you ?

    hi petec,

if it was going to happen (Paddy in the middle) it would’ve happened by now. As it is, he’ll be no more than a funny song in our supporters’ cultural history, and not even a footnote in any club histories. As a player, Paul Byrne did more for us.

I would have liked to see more of Paddy, but Neil clearly wouldn’t have, so there you go.

Funny you mention it though, because I think had we kept Aiden McGeady we could have turned him into a fantastic “false 10”, which WGS experimented with v Milan in the last 16 years ago. I never understood why he didn’t develop that experiment, as it was up with McGeady’s most creative and effective performances for us in terms of ball retention, distribution, and unsettling the opposing defence.

  13. Sunday 8th

In a few hours time I shall be twenty-seven grand years of age. Paradoxically it will be a happy enough birthday; perhaps that’s because I am free in spirit. I can offer no other reason.

I was at Mass today, and saw all the lads minus their beards, etc. An American priest said Mass and I went to Communion. One of the lads collapsed before Mass, but he’s all right now. Another was taken out to Musgrave military hospital. These are regular occurrences.

I am 60.8 kgs today, and have no medical complaints.

I received another note from my sister Bernie and her boyfriend. It does my heart good to hear from her. I got the Irish News today, which carried some adverts in support of the hunger-strike.

There is a stand-by doctor who examined me at the weekend, a young man whose name I did not know up until now. Little friendly Dr Ross has been the doctor. He was also the doctor during the last hunger-strike.

Dr Emerson is, they say, down with the ‘flu… Dr Ross, although friendly, is in my opinion also an examiner of people’s minds. Which reminds me, they haven’t asked me to see a psychiatrist yet. No doubt they will yet, but I won’t see him for I am mentally stable, probably more so than he.

I read some wild-life articles in various papers, which indeed brought back memories of the once-upon-a-time budding ornithologist! It was a bright pleasant afternoon today and it is a calm evening. It is surprising what even the confined eyes and ears can discover.

I am awaiting the lark, for spring is all but upon us. How I listened to that lark when I was in H-5, and watched a pair of chaffinches which arrived in February. Now lying on what indeed is my death bed, I still listen even to the black crows.

  23. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon..!!.. Ibrox belongs to the creditors on

SSB don’t half talk a load of old shoite…….they are now trying to sell NEIL….

On a more sensible subject…….I find it strange that LNS commented on ‘sporting advantage’ at all, since his remit was to ascertain if oldco were guilty of not disclosing the ‘side envelopes’ ….. was he ‘asked’ to make that comment, which hadn’t anything to do with his remit ………not that it matters much, since we all know the agenda is to get sevco up the leagues as quickly as possible…….however, do they not realise that, if they achieve their corrupt objective, they really will destroy Scottish Football permanently….
