Selling players correctly is trickier than it looks

In the immediate aftermath of defeat in Turin our manager was magnanimous towards his opponents, the television broadcaster and his players. Sky TV were thanked for their treatment of Celtic (note to others), Juventus were encouraged to win the Champions League, and Neil acknowledged some players may want to further their careers beyond Scotland.

Let’s be clear, most of the squad are happy at Celtic.  Georgios Samaras could go anywhere in Europe but this Celtic team is his project, as much as it is yours or mine.  Many of the others, including Matthews, Wilson, Lustig, Forster, Mulgrew, Commons, Ledley, Forrest and Izaguirre are settled at Celtic with plenty still to achieve.

Hooper and Wanyama have declined contract offers, so will be most likely to leave in the summer, but in the business Celtic are in right now, if they go, who they go to, is important.    If we lose players to tier-one clubs it will make attracting others a whole lot easier.  If you are a stepping stone to Barcelona, as with Larsson, you are a far more attractive employer than if you lose a striker to Norwich City (I’m friendly with a former Nigerian international who went on trial to Hamilton Accies the week after, and on the strength of, Brian Easton leaving there for the English Premier League).

Selling right makes it easier to buy who you want.  Got to get the right price, keep them for the Champions League qualifiers, and make sure you sell to the right club.

See you at 7.30pm tonight at the Supporters’ Association Club on London Road for the Twists & Turns Celtic Supporters Club charity night.  There will be Question and Answer session with me, John Fallon, Dixie Deans, Archie MacPherson, compared by Phil Agnew.  Afterwards you can enjoy music from Foggy Dew.

Tickets are £10 and you can get them from Phil by calling 07811 178764.  Profits are going to the Tommy Burns charity.

    I suppose, but I thought that 1/2 was crap odds for Rovers, and thought they would win at a canter, so 17/20 for more than 2.5 was money for free…..and that’s why the bookies are still in business, and we are the mugs >}

Funny you should say that. But not Norwich.

Meanwhile when the blog was down we have been teasing zombies about their spelling and posting pics of LOADS of FREE tickets for the Liquidation Arena for tomorrow’s big match. Have a look.

To be fair to Doncaster, the SPL board has said it wants to deliberate the findings of the independent commission at its next meeting. Only Stephen Thompson and the Scottish media are saying we should all forgive and forget and pretend it never happened and fast-track Sevco ‘back’ (ha, ha, good one) up the leagues. The SPL board wants to deliberate.

    Good.

While it’s deliberating, let’s hope Neil Doncaster remember what he told the punters the last time: that if you spend more money than you can afford on players it constitutes and automatic sporting advantage over your competitors.

    I hope he remembers.

When is that meeting scheduled for?? His personal choices looks limited!! I never got the impression that he was the sharpest knife in the drawer and now he’s left his backside exposed..

Classy Juve, never seen it, we had over 30 attempts over 2 legs, but that has been our story this season, even in the league. The way i see it is, we should have buried juve over the 2 legs, if we took our numerous chances, we would not have conceded the goals that we did, although we would have had to defend more often than we had to over the tie. Everyone goes on about Italian defending, ha, Spurs tore that to shreds last night with quick attacking football, something we must need to learn. I’ve lost count how many times we break from inside our own half and when we get to the or near the 18 yard box it breaks down or it goes wide then a cross, end result, ?????. Again classy Juve, no, sorry, did not see it, too many mistakes on our part, can’t see them going further, if they do it will not be down to playing class football. On an other note, cant see Gary Hooper ever playing in CL football again if he leaves us, or Vic, how many big teams will come in for them, dont see the rush to sign them, WHO DOES ?

  7. Without any shadow of doubt

there is no better football club in the world

    than Glasgow Celtic.

And there are no better supporters than

    Celtic supporters.

I don’t know when their meeting is. I hope to find out in advance of it so that I can try to remind Neil Doncaster of what he thinks.

  10. Hello all,

I’m flying into NYC for a two week break beginning tomorrow and was wondering if there are any child friendly bars to watch the football in.

Also, where’s the best place for adults on St Patricks day? We’ve managed to ditch the wee man with the in laws.

    Hail hail!

There is no great proof of a man’s words than his own words in print!!

Good luck and good night all

    Big day the Morra..

    Bring on the County..

  12. Steal a loaf of bread and they used to transport you to the other end of the world. Pay Billions to German and French banks who gambled and lost (or should have done under Capitalist rules) while the disabled lose their mobility allowance and you get an “attaboy” from the President of the IMF. Ireland a free and independent republic my arse.

  13. The spl have covered their ass i think, the verdict was guilty and they fined

a dead horse, so basically they will say they won and why appeal a victory.

Sporting integrity wont even be discussed.A total stitch up between spl and sfa.

  14. thetimrieper

Because the independent commission made a mockery of the SPL’s own rules and its secretary, Ian Blair, when it concluded that the club that broke the rules (can’t remember its name) gained no sporting advantage.

In addition, this clean contradicts the published views of the SPL chief executive on the subject.

They can’t just pretend none of the above happened and carry on as though no one in Scotland can read.

  15. Greenwells Glory on

Hi Ghuys, Salve salve:- Ah well that’s the champions’ league adventure over for this year, I can only say to Lenny and the bhoys a very big thank you for some great moments. Mistakes were made? sure they were but many more things went right and I think we have some grest young players comming through.

LNS ? For me it’s not about Wilfrid Pickles and the sevconian agriculturals, it is far more important that the club together with any allies it can garner bring forth a vote of no confidence in the present administration of the SFA, these particular Augean stables are well past a date for a clean out. If the board are not seen to be taking action on this particular front then I fear that when the season ticket renewal forms hit the floors the reaction of the support could be catastrophic for Celtic. This would be a great pity because I firmly believe that the club are getting a whole lot of things right but they risk all if they think the support will roll up and play the roulette wheel in a rigged casino.

I think thats exactly what they will do, fans are treated with contempt and

are a hindrance to their great vision for one club. and if fans are reading

watching the news, what info are they getting.

The huns claim a victory, the spl claim a victory and its business as usual.

We purchased some lovely photographs of Celtic in the 70’s today. These relate to your team selection for that decade. Mag out midweek.
