SFA finally acknowledge Rangers EBT issue

1494

Stewart Regan today gave a welcome update on the SFA’s on-going investigation into Rangers.  In response to Hugh Adam’s comments in today’s Daily Mail, Regan said:

“We are, however, aware of the most recent allegations made against Rangers FC today by a former director of the club. We shall investigate this matter thoroughly before making any further comment.”

SFA president, Campell Ogilvie, was general secretary and director of Rangers from 1978 until 2005. News broke about HMRC’s dispute over Rangers Employment Benefit Trust in 2010, you knew then, I knew then, the SFA knew then, but Ogilvie was subsequently elevated to the role of SFA president in 2011.  He is still on the SFA board.

We have waited almost two years the hear the SFA would investigate this matter. Now, with all the old certainties crumbling down around them, they realise they must act.

Can I be the first to congratulate Dundee FC on winning the Scottish Cup in 2003.

  1. If a supplier does some work for a client, say a painter and decorator doing work in a pub, and the painter presents the publican with an invoice, and before it is paid, the publican goes bankrupt, then that is just business and tough luck on the painter.

Similarly, with the cash owed by Rangers to Heart of Midlothian, it’s hard luck on the Edinburgh club. However, when it comes to the money owed by Rangers to Dunfermline and Inverness, it is a different matter altogether. Rangers sold match tickets on behalf of those clubs and in so doing, collected an amount of money in the process.

That those funds have not been handed over is tantamount to theft, if not actually theft, as distict from a company in financial trouble not being able to find the money to pay an outstanding bill.

That money was there from the sale of the tickets. Rangers Football Club made a conscious decision to keep that money and use it to run the club, or to increase the bank balance of the club’s owner, however one looks at it.

It is theft, in anyone’s language.

They truly are a disgusting institution with no dignity and dishonest to the core, with absolutely no thought for the damage inflicted on other Scottish clubs.

The sooner they bite the dust, the better for everyone.

  3. Some of the unravelling revelations surrounding Scottish football have left some outside observers totally perplexed. My day job means travel, lots of it. I have been making a point of clarifying and placing on context some of the stories in recent years to football loving clients all over the UK.

They have mostly, until recently, viewed me as a somewhat poor loser, essentially a stereo-typical supporter of one side of the Glasgow divide.

I attended a meeting on Thursday in London where – under AOB – genuinely – I was asked by one of my closer colleagues to educate his colleagues around the table over the situation at Ibrox. He stated that my explanations and pronouncements over the past year or so had been prophetic, and that I may a good source of info on at least 5 of the 6 lottery numbers this week! (For that acclamation I tip the old hat to Paul67, RTC and Phil.)

We then spent 30 minutes in discussion about the key factors in this sorry mess, with occassional diversions to cover such ground as Jim Farry, Fergus McCann, Hugh Dallas, Dougie Dougie and Hugh Adam. I had no idea at that point in time that Mr Adam had resurfaced.

    They were totally astonished.

Of all the scenarios discussed, the most incredulous of all was my expectation that Newco RFC would be manouvered straight back into the SPL, despite previous indiscretions and sporting rules which already exist – and have been applied – to cover such a scenario as liquidation.

They all agreed that – if the timelines associated with Ogilvie and Bain in their various capacities within the governing bodies is proven, per Tony’s call to Shortbread last week – that it would be a scandal if those governing bodies found a way to manouvre them back into the SPL.

They all agreed that Scottish football would benefit from one of the big two being removed from the equation, even if it meant reduction in the TV deal and lower budgets. The crowds would come out as their teams would have genuine opportunity to qualify for major European competitions. Celtic may run away with it for 3 or 4 seasons, but “so what” thay said – the big two have run away with it for 25 years. Good point, I thought.

Scottish football faces an integrity test. Such a test is always harder when there is cash involved. Lets hope those in charge remember what the game is about.

  4. STAFF and pupils from Our Lady & St Patrick’s High School are celebrating after being awarded one of the best Her Majesty Inspectorate of Education (HMIe) reports in Scotland.

The outstanding report follows the inspection of the school in January when the school was awarded “excellent”, the highest possible assessment, in three evaluations and “very good” the second highest grade, in the other two

Inspectors were so impressed by the school, they have identified areas of “innovative practice” they would like to learn more about and share with other schools locally and nationally.

  6. celtic could take the small hit in income and in fact, it might just trigger a smaller squad of similar quality, with more young players getting a chance and less chancers collecting wages for nothing.

It may not have been a vintage championship, but believe me it will taste as sweet to these Celtic supporters as any they have ever secured.

Because they have stopped Rangers from breaking away the history book record of ten-in-a-row. And perhaps the best tribute should be made by simply listening for a few seconds to the Celtic fans singing their beloved anthem……

My ideal scenario sees them ceasing to exist, with two rivals starting out against each other. Meantime, we move to pastures new.

We owe this league nothing. All they’ve done is take from us.

Leaving them to it, with two Weedgie based hun outfits would be hysterical.

i think scottish football, after a period of adjustment, would be in a far healthier place than it is right now.

all the focus is on the ‘need for ranger’ and the ‘end of scottish football without ranger’ etc…, there is nothing about contingency plans should ranger die, where is the planning, preparation etc… to make sure changes are made

yet, most all fans i talk to from celtic to hibs to aberdeen to dundee united fans will feel cheated if rangers is allowed to walk back into the slp.

in no other business than the spl would the consumer be treated with such disdain. thing is just about every gate in the country will drop if rangers is allowed to just walk back into the league

maybe a protest from all spl fans walking out of the ground 15 minutes before the end of football matches over the coming months will let the clubs know the score

  24. Looking at the depth and scope of the corruption in Scottish football, it is a wonder that Celtic still managed to win in spite of it all. Playing good, sometimes great, sometimes sublime football, without kicking anything that moves, without giving the ref a funny handshake, with so-called football “writers” on their back at every opportunity, and the players and managers vilified. Sent bombs and bullets, sneered at, attacked, their schools blamed for the cesspit of bigotry occupied by the untermench, and the government of the day trying to portray them as a flipside of the same coin as Rangers. Well by God they know now how power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. The Celtic family can stand tall and proud, but then—they always did.

  25. Right Bhoys another serious ? Would you rather win title at ibrox or parkhead against St.Johnstone?

  28. i propose that we, fans of all clubs in scotland, as is tradition, hold a 2 minute silence in every games until the end of the season as a symbol of our unity against any newco being drafted directly into the SPL

this is a way of letting every club chairman and the SPL board know that supporters of every other club object to to a newco gaining direct entry to the SPL.

and as they say the customers are always right

  29. Fortunes Favour Mibbes

That would be funny and it could happen because there will be those that are sectarian to the core and those that will realise their free ride at winning things is over and will have to, now they have been exposed to everyone else, play by the proper rules.
