SFA not caring enough. Morton, ooft.

658

What exactly went wrong at yesterday’s Scottish Cup draw? Plastic balls can break open, that wasn’t the problem. The rule which insists that when a ball breaks open the draw must be started again isn’t the problem either. It’s a perfectly reasonable rule, but the event still can the SFA in a dreadful light.

Imagine for a moment that you had a Cup draw to arrange live on international television. You would surely acquire the materials necessary (8 balls and a bowl), and test their effectiveness (mix the balls, pull them out, open), until you were satisfied the process was robust and not likely to embarrass the organisation.

Appropriate preparations were evidently not followed for the Scottish Cup quarter final draw.

Having got to the stage that the draw went wrong, the TV masses were then treated to the most cringe-worthy pregnant pause, as SFA president, Alan McRae completely failed to communicate, either to the watching TV audience, or to the event broadcaster SKY, why he pulled a ball out of the bowl and instead of announcing the tie, declared the draw invalid.

McRae knew the ball was opened before it was drawn, and that this invalidated the draw, but clearly the glaikit-looking TV presenter had no idea what was going on when McRae halted mid-process, neither did the TV audience. A simple explanation:

“This ball is open. Rules state the draw is invalid. We will need to start again.”

….was surely what any person possessing even remote people-awareness or communication skills would have said?

No explanation was given. We were treated instead to the site of a TV presenter trying in vain to figure out why a cup draw was scratched halfway through.

The role of SFA president requires a degree of communication skills, which Mr McRae was hugely bereft of yesterday.

As for the SFA itself, I went to their official site this morning to check the spelling of McRae’s name, only to find they still list Campbell Ogilvie as president, despite McRae’s appointment 8 months ago.

It beggars belief. They just don’t care enough to get the easy things right.

As for getting Morton at Celtic Park! Ooft.  After Ross County repeating their Hampden trick on us, Morton will fancy the same.

I know many of you have previously supported the fantastic efforts of Bundoran Bhoy. This year he is doing four runs for Solving Kids’ Cancer, in memory of Oscar Knox. His first is the Great Edinburgh (misnomer?) Run in April, the Edinburgh Marathon in May, Glasgow Men’s 10k in June and the Great Scottish Run Half Marathon in October.

He has just launched his 2016 fundraising efforts, so you can nip in here and encourage him along.

You mean he paid Fergus McCann £4m for an asset he thought was worth £4m?

I’m not sure that makes him a fan.

    It makes him an owner.

    Robert88,

That underwriting of the similar amount would that be when he denied the support a bigger shareholding ?

MrKeane was a businessman who did as you put it “pour money into the club” but he did not do it to make money he done it to save the club, and that is the difference as you know.

But back to the profit, you claim to know the figures he put in and I’m not going to question the accuracy, now can you tell us how much he has taken from the club and I don’t need to know that he is a businessman wanting. To make money I already know that, I want you who have the figures to tell us how much he has taken from the club.

Question: Regardless of whether they ultimately work out or not do you believe board members have the best interests of Celtic at heart when they make decisions?

    ###

I don’t think anyone would doubt that.

The problem is that the idea of what is best for Celtic is entirely subjective.

Someone might hold the view that the best thing for Celtic is to gloss over the death of the huns, pretend it never happened, and get the Old Firm show back up and running again as soon as possible.

Others might have a different view.

He was certainly happy to sell his stake to Malcolm Glazer for some $$$$

When he sold to Glazer, did he care about what the Glazer’s were trying to do to that great club?

  7. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession

That’s his choice, and as we have seen, could have been a complete and utter waste of time, good money after bad, luckily for Mr Keane it paid off.

That’s a massive assumption, I don’t claim to know anything, I have read various things that state that amount, how could I possibly know what DD has taken from the club since his initial investment.

You seem to more want to try discredit what I am saying rather than take on flippant comment from someone spouting crap with no basis about masons, sneaky millionaires and lords.

Underwriting is that like acting as a guarintor ?

Like he never actually put his hand in his pocket he simply said if they come up short I’ll cover it ?

How much has he made from the club, all we ever hear from his supporters is that he poured money in, as if the money he invested was ever at risk when everyone on here knows it was minuscule to zero risk compared to the money he thought he’d make when he was angling for the EPL deal.

There was zero concern for the club it was 100% business and people need to understand that! he has never had Celtic’s best interest at heart only his own.

It’s not a wonder DD avoids AGMs, I’v been at them, it’s amateur night, starring the splinter groups, all shouting, shame shame shame, the bam pots think they’r in the house of commons, it’s actually cringeworthy to watch them in action, it’s embarrassing too, all sit together in they’r Wee cabal with there head honcho, like in here shouting down positives and cheering each other on, and not listening to a word being said. If you ever get the chance to go to one, DONT.

  16. Hi Bhoys

Regarding what you should or should not be to qualify as a Celtic fan, how about this. Many years ago I travelled on the Johnstone Celtic Supporters bus with a gentleman who was more Celtic minded than anyone and I mean anyone I have ever met.

He was a pensioner and had travelled on the bus for years. He was made an honourary member of the bus and travelled everywhere to see his team. For those old enough to remember he even won the fan of the month award in the Sunday Post. Imagine a Celtic fan winning any competition never mind fan of the month in the Sunday Post, who’s chief sports writer was Doug Baillie an ex player of the deed club.

He had a son also Celtic minded and 3 grandsons who are all Celtic minded. Nothing unusual in that really except not one of them were of the catholic persuasion. Again not to much unusual there either. But just read this still to this day Jimmy was/is the only protestant, tory voting, free masonic, Celtic supporter I have EVER met.

God bless and keep you Jimmy Anderson.

Now my friends that is why we are all inclusive as a club and as long as that is the case we will always be blessed as a support full of fine fine people.

By the way if his son in Turkey sees this I hope you and the wife are doing really well in your new life. If any of the grandsons read it tell your dad Tony was asking for him.

  18. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Robert88,

Im no defending anyone, you made a statement that DD “poured money into the club” that whole phrase implies to me anyway, an altruistic motive, like he done it for the good of Celtic, whilst justifying he should be allowed to make money which has never been questioned, what is being questioned is that contrary to some beliefs DD has never and will never be a Celtic supporter he is purely a business man out to make money and Celtic is the safest bet he has ever had the good luck to come across.

You like all supporters of the board know how much goes in but never how much comes out, why is that you think ? Agenda maybe eh, naw board supporters don’t have agenda only those who ask questions have agenda, innit.

  19. Robert88

Regardless of flippancy, we clearly have differing views on the role of a diligent board member. I am well aware that Dermot Desmond has a multitude of business interests and can’t be everywhere at once, but failure to attend a single board meeting personally since at least 2006 is taking the piss a bit in my opinion.

    Paddybhoy1888,

I read pre match references to one of us having a son playing in the game.

Not being “local” I had no idea to whom it referred.

I can understand the fears that you had for your boy, pre match, but he couldn’t possibly have done any better in the game.

Well done, Matt and congratulations to the rest of his familt.

  21. Well I was wrong in thinking that Ronny would go yesterday and looking at where we are, I must admit they he will probably be in situ now until the end of the season, let’s hope it’s not the bitter end!! However I do find the silence coming out of Celtic Park deafening.

The explanation may be that Celtic do not want to pander to various sections of the media – e.g. Jackson, Clyde, BBC and SKY, who are calling for Ronny’s head – they might feel that they would legitimise the reporting frenzy by commenting – that’s fair enough and understandable.

I will of course get behind Ronny and the team for the rest of the season and comment no more on our managerial situation, unless something transpires – I hope others will do likewise – we have a fight on our hands, let’s face it together – united we stand Hail Hail!

    CELTIC SAVIOUR: Dermot Desmond [GETTY]

The Irish tycoon – and Celtic’s majority shareholder – spoke on the eve of the 20th anniversary of McCann’s takeover and acknowledged he was won over by the masterplan that was being put in place way back in 1994 after the then board was ousted.

“It was all about saving Celtic – Fergus was saving Celtic,” recalled Desmond.

“I wasn’t really aware of all the intricacies going on between the various families and factions, but Fergus went in there, I would say, as a neutral, cold and hard, and wanted to do his best for Celtic and its fans.

“I saw that and I believed in that, and it was easy for me then to look at it on that basis and to support him.

“But I never looked upon it purely as a normal investment because, as I’ve said many times before, Celtic is an emotional investment, although at the same time you don’t want to be throwing money at emotional investments as you could go broke pretty quickly doing that.

“So I looked upon it as creating a solid financial platform for Celtic in conjunction with Fergus and the other board members.

“But the emotional side of it sways you. If it had been another club on the same basis, I wouldn’t have been interested in investing.

“But, from when I was a young boy, I had a fondness and a love for Celtic so it was easy for me to look at it closely and I started off wanting to invest rather than from a basis of refusing it.”

It was all about saving Celtic – Fergus was saving Celtic

    Dermot Desmond

Desmond, talking to The Celtic View, also revealed how he got together with McCann as Celtic teetered on the brink of going bust.

“It was 1994 when I’d been introduced to the opportunity of investing in Celtic by a friend of mine called Brian Phelan, who connected me with Fergus.

“I looked over the plans he had and he told me they were looking for £4million, but I felt they would need to raise £8m.

“So I said I would invest £4m and underwrite another £4m, so that was really my first financial encounter with Celtic.”

Since then, Desmond has kept a low public profile as far as the Hoops are concerned but remains hugely interested in everything that happens at Parkhead. And no major decisions are taken without his say-so.

He is also close to manager Neil Lennon.

But now, as then, he appreciates exactly what the support means to Celtic, and added: “The football club is about the fans.

“It’s a merger between all the players, the coaches, the executives and the fans – and we are all unified in our love of Celtic.

“I think a football club without fans is not a football club.”

I’ve long said that as fans we should be demanding a standing end of the ground with cheaper seats.
