SFA, The Offshore Game, flogging assets

616

The SFA surprised many by refusing Mike Ashley permission to buy up to 29.9% of a second club.  As I said earlier in the week, don’t get too hung up on this one.  Ashley could play The Offshore Game, like the anonymised Blue Pitch or Margarita, or he could just do what he’s already done, ignore the SFA and underwrite the share issue anyway.  What would the SFA do?

Well, they could impose the ultimate sanction, but that’s unlikely.  They could impose a heavy point penalty, enough to ensure the club are not promoted this season, and refuse to register signings of players older than 21-years.

It’s perhaps more likely that Ashley will loan the money required in return for whatever assets are left.  Oldco went out of business a few months after they were sold to a liquidation expert.  The path newco will follow down the lavvy will be different.  Like any other squeezed business, they will redeem assets, sell the training fields, and the stadium, before putting themselves into the hands of a liquidator.

As for long-term financial viability, does anyone think this looks likely?

I thought Wilson was a decent player. My comment was just a light-hearted comment on the phenomenon that is the `improvement` in players either dropped, injured, retired or transferred. Craig Gordon apart, I think all the other, regularly selected players receive criticism from some quarter.

I was sent an e mail from someone who got this straight from Lenny’s mouth.

You can believe it or not, I do as I trust the person who sent it to 100%, he has no reason to lie.

Hooper and K.Wilson: Massively regretted their moves, both were on to him wishing they could come back. Lenny told them from his experience (the short spell at Forest at end of career) the comedown from Parkhead is really hard to handle. Not the league obviously, but the club, the training, standards “it’s like a bug that you catch, and you’re so used to winning” or words to that effect.

He fell out with Brian O’Neill (ex-Celtic) over Wilson. O’Neill was a “transfer consultant” for Forest and basically orchestrated the move, with the stuff about the family a complete smokescreen. Lenny rang O’Neill and said if he’d been upfront it wouldn’t have been a problem, but now they were going to have to pay a million more for him…

I think Ronny has said that overall he’d give the squad a 5 or 6 out of 10 for this season so far.

    I think that’s fairly accurate.

Talking of our ex players & tims playing down the road, Gary Hooper scored today as well as James McLean & Johnny Russell, who took his goal well. Johnny has scored eight goals this season despite playing in a wide position. I wish we had signed him.

I pity Gary Hooper having to endure playing in the same team as the plasticine hard men, Whittaker and Lafferty, yeugh.

  8. On the last blog Auldheid and Parkheadcomesalford reminisced about games at Easter Road. I think I was at one they mentioned round about 1974. It was a Saturday afternoon game and a green and white tsunami surged across that narrow bridge yards from the turnstiles. Portable metal barriers formed yet another hurdle for the Celtic supporters to negotiate. Somebody kicked one of them over and a human wave dashed itself against the stadium wall. It was not at all nice . I saw a man in front of me turning purple and I got the impression that my own ribs were going to break one by one.

I don’t know if there were any fatalities – there wasn’t one word about it in the press. Celtic won, I think, 3-2. And who was there coming out of the Usher Hall as the supporters streamed into Edinburgh but Harold Wilson. He certainly liked the Celtic fans.

I’m pretty sure that Wilson said in the press that he keen to move back to England. He may well regret that now.

I can though tell you for certain that Hooper regrets leaving but wouldn’t come back.

  15. Hamiltontim, today marks my anniversary of having the pleasure of Ziggy’s company with my brother.

Looking ahead to his first match in charge against Hibernian on Saturday, McDowall explained that he was not planning major alterations to team selection or approach.

He said: “There’s not a whole load I can change because everything Ally was doing was with my backing.

So, the guy who masterminded the defeats to Peterhead, Alloa and QOS (twice) on the training ground is now driving the bus!

They’ll be lucky to be involved in the play offs.
