SFL delivers as SPL Ltd facing insolvency

1374

The Scottish Football League today placed an upper limit on which division Sevco can play in next season – their Third.  We must now wait on the company providing sufficient information to complete their application to the SFL and for membership of the Scottish FA.  Although many Rangers fans want Sevco to join the Third Division, chief exec Charles Green was clearly hoping to start life higher up the food chain.

The overwhelming nature of this verdict indicates the solidarity between clubs and fans, throughout the divisions, on how our sport is governed.  This is a good thing but it leaves one burning question on the table:

Is the Scottish Premier League insolvent?

Last week SPL chief exec Neil Doncaster told SFL clubs that the Premier League would be unable to meet its contractual obligations if they did not vote Sevco into the First Division.  Unless this was a shameless lie designed to bully clubs into giving Doncaster what he wanted, the Scottish Premier League Ltd should seek to appoint an administrator without delay.

You can ignore comments about league reconstruction at some unspecified point in the future, Doncaster told us last year that “those who want 16 teams in the top flight are deluding themselves.”

The Scottish Football League does not need the SPL, or its money, to continue to thrive as a community-based sporting entity.  They will flourish.  What happens to the SPL remains to be seen.

As we have observed once or twice before, M. Platini, where are you?  We need the football world to assist with the survival of the game in one of its historic heartlands.

    INVERNESS CT CHAIRMAN KENNY CAMERON

“There will now inevitably be serious consequences for the game in Scotland.

“We have all, as clubs, accepted the views of our stakeholders in making the initial judgement to uphold sporting integrity.

“All clubs will now have to live with the repercussions of this decision. Scottish football was at a crossroads today in terms of what was on the table for all clubs regarding reorganisation, financial distribution and a road map that would have taken the game forward.

“But this has now been thrown in to disarray by this decision. This is a sad day for all clubs in Scotland.”

“None of us will escape the financial fallout from this. There was an opportunity on the table, in terms of the joint agreement tabled at today’s meeting, for us all to come together and a genuine willingness to improve the game substantially over the coming years. But it now looks as though this will once again be kicked back in to the long grass. A once in a lifetime opportunity to bring forward change may well have been lost.

“The directors of ICTFC are fully aware of the financial implications of this latest decision on Newco. The loss of either our fans or our sponsors was never going to leave any of the clubs in Scotland in a healthy financial position and for some this could spell the end of football as we know it.

“Certain clubs in the SFL have perceived the financial information they were receiving as a ‘big stick’ to beat them into accepting Newco in the First Division. This was definitely not the case, as far as I am concerned. What they were being told was the reality of the situation.

“We will be convening an emergency board meeting over the weekend to discuss the very serious financial implications for us as a club going forward

Well todays result was the best we were ever going to get or is it ? I feel pressure must be put on to get the resignation of Ogylvie,Doncaster and Regan they are not fit for purpose.Scottish football needs them gone to finalise the clean up of the sport.H.H.

  6. the glorious balance sheet on

Ridiculous statement from Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Clearly Doncaster and Regan have been acting in accordance with the wishes of a cabal of SPL clubs.

    Oh God.

    How special is this day.

Born almost 75 years ago, I was reared on stories of the abuses that had been visited upon my community.

Following Celtic in the 1950’s & 60’s only confirmed what I had been told.

    We had ALWAYS been cheated.

    Always would be.

TODAY, I am a child again.

All my birthdays & christmases have been realised in one day.

I only wish the hundreds of family & friends who have long since passed on could be here today to enjoy this special time.
