Shocking result but expected performance

1103

I’m not going to say I saw this coming, I didn’t see defeat, but when I wrote a couple of days ago that you and I have seen a lot more games like Celtic’s away to Lincoln Red Imps than Brendan Rodgers, and about European football in July, I knew this one was never going to play out in a triumphant manner.

On the first day he was appointed I asked one of you to compile Brendan an Efe highlights video – I assume we were all busy. God love Efe, he’s a fine man by all accounts, but he’s three years into a slump which is not going to end at Celtic. Brendan must now be aware. It’s no longer Efe’s fault if he costs us again.

I also made the point previewing this game that we can’t expect a squad comprising only one addition to last season’s group to perform remarkably different in qualification than a year ago. In this sense, Celtic performed as expected, this one had all the hallmarks of our recent Icelandic ventures.

The manager may not be embarrassed at the result (I suspect he might sound different privately) but many supporters are. Gibraltar has a population similar to Bellshill, but without the football heritage and support mechanism. Would defeat to Bellshill Athletic be embarrassing? You bet. Yesterday’s result was too.

We are woefully slow in build-up and have only one player in the squad who can create the 7 or 8 chances per game needed to get a result, and he’s 33 next month and currently injured.

We remain strong favourites to qualify for the next round but there is an enormous amount of work to be done in the next month. This is not a Champions League squad.

That would also help! Hoping the transfer market starts moving soon so we can get wheeling and dealing. Maybe Harry Redknapp should be brought in to help:)

Id play Griff and Moussa in a two….Roberts wide.

Griff should always be playing central.

Cant get my head round the attempt to make him a wide player….its very silly imo

Everyone at Celtic is now playing for their future. If they’re found wanting, they won’t play.

Attitude as well as aptitude will have a part to play in those decisions.

Shape up,or ship out. I’m pretty sure that is the message that every member of our squad will have received.

But they must have known that before the game and it doesn’t seem to have made any difference.

Morning Bhoys it is a lovely morning here in Central Scotland.Firstly Brendan Rodgers must accept his share of responsibilty as his team selection was in my opinion woeful but despite that he is not a stupid man so folk talking about him giving the players the hairdryer treatment are incorrect. At this early stage of his career as Celtic manager he needs these players getting on the wrong side of them until he has replacements would be bad management. It is interesting that EFE is getting all the blame for the goal we lost but Craig Gordon was also part of it as he could have prevented it but also made a hash of it. H.H.

Many a Celtic captain would have chinned half of those non-triers….no doubt

What would Danny McGrain have said about a performance like that, or Billy McNeil?

    I shudder to think.

What does John Clark, and the original Holy Goalie think….not amused i bet.

    And they deserve it.

Most know they will be gone, and the sooner the better.

The ineptitude of that group of players is notorious….we are getting a name in Europe, for being s****.

    That has to stop.

I’m not here particularly to say that BR is blameless. Many of us questioned his selection.

But he is only able to pick the players at his disposal, and to the formation he wants to play.

Now,I’m pretty sure that he will usually set the team out to play in his preferred formation. But I very much doubt it will be with those players. Some will return from injury. Others will be promoted to the team. Many will be sidelined.

And hopefully some targeted players will be brought in.

No matter how poor the Celtic players are, by any measure they were far more skillful, fitter and better prepared than the Red Imps.

Their failure to win reflects on the manager’s inability to get the best out of them, which, at the end of the day, is all a manager has to do, get the best out of the players he has at his disposal, by a combination of team selection, tactics, man management and motivational ability.

Forgot to say, coming through security at Ponta Delgado airport, a guard was looking in my Rucksack after it had been through the X-Ray scanner.

“I like this bag” says he, pointing to the Celtic Crest. I point out the crest on my grey shorts too. “Maybe not after last night” says I. “They lost 1-0 in Europe” says he.

Anyhooz turns out he is a Sporting fan, so likes the strip and knows all about Celtic. He asks me if I remember Jorge Cadette……………..

Normally I would agree. But we know what those players are like. They have form for it.

I’ll say it again-their failure on Tuesday told us more about them than it ever will about BR.

BR has a future with us. Tuesday was his first bad result.

Many of those players have given us one bad result after another. They can GTF. If they don’t appreciate who they are playing for, tough. Beat it.

Yes, SB has lost his way – you mention King Billy, and DMcG and then ……SB?! Sorry his name cant be in the same sentence but SB has served the club well and has lost his way for whatever reason – what I don’t like, as I said in a previous post, is this spin-doctor stuff going on with BR – sure every manager needs an element of that but to say that SB is a Managers dream will most definitely bite you back in the bum! TBH we are being fed so much BS/contradictory comments by BR it is hard to deal with it all! Maybe he will be a great celtic manager but he is doing himself no favours – think its fair to say MOST celtic fans know how a performing team should look and the penetrating-less current celtic mid-field simply cannot perform. Although SA as shown some decent visionary play. With regards KT perhaps there were some reason – even if bizarre – that he was so un-penetrative against the imps? General view of that game – total over-reaction including the contagious surges of outcry agains Efe – although he has to go for his own sake and that of the team – that pitch was a present for injuries and I can understand why PR was not played and indeed that probably explains why KT was so negative! Perhaps even why LG was played wide – so many things could have been going on the other night in BR’s heed! We lost the game but not the tie! HoweverIt was not about the game! It’s was about the TIE and whatever it takes to come through the TIE unscathed – bigger fish ahead! Celtic will do that and the imps will be shown no mercy at CP and we will all move along on our merry way – thats football or soccer-emotion as I call it – we would not be alive without it! NOT supporting the celts or singing the songs to a cold beer? Shoot me now!

If you ask most Liverpool fans what they disliked about Brendan Rodgers I believe you would find it was his after match interviews as they never seemed to match the same game the Liverpool fans had just watched. We have seen that for ourselves already with his comments after Tuesday evenings match we have to trust Brendan and hope that he is taking his time in the transfer market to ensure he gets it right. Looking at the bigger picture, football is going through another change.

Possession is no longer considered the pathway to success.

This has been underlined by the success of less talented teams, with less possession.

Germany vFrance and France v Portugal had more of the ball, but couldn’t progress.

Celtic are not geared to combat this style.

He must be one of the most technically gifted players in the country.

Now drive, heart and commitment- these are his weaknesses. These are the most important aspect for any player to be successful. Technical ability is the icing on the cake . I’ve played with and coached many players.. The defining attribute is almost always heart. No courage you can never be a player.

    Interesting point of view CB.

What are his technical abilities? I don’t see a great passer, his crossing is below average, runs with his head down, does not have a powerful shot or heading ability and is easily brushed off the ball.

He looks knackered early in games but that doesn’t necessarily mean he isnt driven.

You are right about drive and commitment being the minimum expectation – but there should be a minimum technical level of ability too.

He would be a good signing for a club like Hibs but he is not the guy who will help us improve. Of course he has his moments but overall who would fear a Celtic team with him on the wing? Not many IMO.

  33. Good morning from a very warm Chicago.

Some here think we are going to by to win the return leg in a stroll.

First, the history of this squad is that they utterly fail when under pressure in a one off game.

Second, if they put nine or ten behind the ball-really park the bus-and keep their shape, I just don’t see us having the personnel and heart to easily open them up.

I hope to goodness I am wrong, but this is good by to be a nervy one. LRI will be playing for a piece of history and they will be up and ready for it
