Small investors in football clubs cannot overpay

1059

Really delighted at the flow of sentiment towards Billy McNeill and the launch of the new frontage of Celtic Park tomorrow.  The place is beginning to look like a 21st Century venue, now we need the shops, restaurants and bars to bring the match-day experience alive.

Were you one of the fans who put £620 (or more) into Celtic shares in 1994?  Around 10,000 did, raising an initial total of around £10m from small investors alone.  It wasn’t an investment, none of us wanted or expected the money back, it was our contribution to Celtic at a time of critical need.

Many small investor-Rangers fans did the same when Newco went to market in December 2012, although one high-profile investor, who coughed up £500k, has asked Dave King to buy him out.

The stark reality facing these shareholders is that if King’s path is followed to a logical conclusion the club will be run into the ground, destroying their investments along with everything else.  I have some sympathy for their position.

King is not interested in buying control of the club, even at the discounted price shares are now available at.  He emailed the £500k investor “Why should any new investor bail out existing investors because they made mistakes in overpaying for their shares. The club needs money not complaining shareholders”.

The price paid by small investors was perhaps the most irrelevant figure to them, they paid the gross figure they could afford, irrespective of price.  The value of the share was irrelevant so to accuse them of making a mistake by overpaying is like criticising the month of March for being too purple.

How the small shareholders feel about this behaviour will not determine what actions the Newco board takes, that will be come down to how easily manipulated people like the Easdales, Mike Ashley and Laxey Partners are.  My information is they are not easily manipulated in the slightest.

  3. Hey Hamiltontim. I agree it’s not fair to judge everyone who is a devout catholic based on macmillans somewhat fascist opinions. But I think the catholic church”s relative silence on institutional sectarianism speaks volumes. They could do so much more.

  4. Oh and the Dallas affair. Well it was two things that prompted that. To defend the pope and to react against the abuse scandal which has engulfed it.

It wasn’t to defend its flock, whom I repeat, it just wishes to control.

Maybe, just maybe, the Catholic Church in Scotland doesn’t recognise this ‘institutional sectarianism’ that you witness.

Yep. I’d choose Commons and Stokes up front as it was such a great pairing in the Motherwell away game – hasn’t been tried since. Griffiths and Stokes, whilst devastating last week, have looked good, but not great. My worry is that Griffiths can do it against the lesser sides, but defensively solid teams like Aberdeen know how to handle him. If he performs well today, he’ll have done a lot to change my opinion of him as a player.

JM said everyone fit except for Sammi. However, I haven’t heard anything about Forrest, so have to assume he’s not quite ready. Think Biton should be fit – the Brown/Biton/Mulgrew inspires me with a lot more confidence than any 3 featuring Johansen.

  21. up_over_goal

The introduction of Johansen & Griffiths, and change in formation, has turned home performances from turgid pre-January window to very entertaining since.

The midfield should be Johansen, Brown plus one IMO, and after Mulgrew’s performance last week he should keep his place. Good that we have Biton & Henderson in reserve.

Wouldn’t get my nose out of joint over that article, can’t really see the point to it, but the author should remember that he does live in a democracy and political freedom is still a right. He should also be aware that not all Celtic supporters are Catholic.

  26. Kitalba. That’s my point. Apparently Catholics are not allowed to form their own political opinions, well according to mr McMillan. I think the constant attacks on celtic supporters is extremely concerning.

Hamiltontim. On the Dallas story the Catholic Church was defending itself Only. Not its flock. And some articles in the observer, which is only read by Catholics, does not equal the campaign that the church should have been on for years against the racism that so clearly exists in Scotland.

I’d agree it’s been more entertaining, but it generally gets better towards the summer as other teams tire and Celtic’s schedule is cleared through elimination from Europe (and the cups :-( ) but imo it’s the 4-3-1-2 formation that’s been responsible, not the striking personnel. Griffiths was appalling v Aberdeen when he came on as a sub (I know, I know, 1st appearance) but I have my doubts as to how he’ll cope with decent defences (few to be found in our league).

Johansen – great against St Mirren, Hearts, Partick Thistle, but against Dundee Utd, Motherwell, and even last week v Inverness his flaws have started to show.
