Small investors in football clubs cannot overpay

1059

Really delighted at the flow of sentiment towards Billy McNeill and the launch of the new frontage of Celtic Park tomorrow.  The place is beginning to look like a 21st Century venue, now we need the shops, restaurants and bars to bring the match-day experience alive.

Were you one of the fans who put £620 (or more) into Celtic shares in 1994?  Around 10,000 did, raising an initial total of around £10m from small investors alone.  It wasn’t an investment, none of us wanted or expected the money back, it was our contribution to Celtic at a time of critical need.

Many small investor-Rangers fans did the same when Newco went to market in December 2012, although one high-profile investor, who coughed up £500k, has asked Dave King to buy him out.

The stark reality facing these shareholders is that if King’s path is followed to a logical conclusion the club will be run into the ground, destroying their investments along with everything else.  I have some sympathy for their position.

King is not interested in buying control of the club, even at the discounted price shares are now available at.  He emailed the £500k investor “Why should any new investor bail out existing investors because they made mistakes in overpaying for their shares. The club needs money not complaining shareholders”.

The price paid by small investors was perhaps the most irrelevant figure to them, they paid the gross figure they could afford, irrespective of price.  The value of the share was irrelevant so to accuse them of making a mistake by overpaying is like criticising the month of March for being too purple.

How the small shareholders feel about this behaviour will not determine what actions the Newco board takes, that will be come down to how easily manipulated people like the Easdales, Mike Ashley and Laxey Partners are.  My information is they are not easily manipulated in the slightest.

The guy who was good enough to drive us around to games that season decided not to go, hence the 2 trains to Paisley for me. Despite all the wind-ups after the game, I did miss them not being there to enjoy it with me. Not that I’ve ever told them that!

I note the article was written 4 years ago. I don’t share all of James McMillan’s views as they appear in the article. He comes across as being ‘a bit superior’ and it smacks of Nevinism. In my post above I was referring to his musical talents.

  5. Oh, dear. He is again sniffing for truffles. How many times I can ask to scroll past my comments? Call your doctor and ask him if you can up your dose of Iladian Direct Plus.

No GB flocking to CP for the Aberdeen game, we won’t be herd and ewe all be prepared to be out sung.

  7. I think its time we showed the sheep today the true Champions and play them off the park in the true Celtic way.4-0 Leigh first goal.

  8. I have just read the James McMillan article and I found it bizarre until I read his last couple of lines.

Whilst I have seen celtic fans rally round the Palestine cause (we tend to support the underdog) I have certainly not heard any ant Semitic chants at CP or while travelling with celtic fans.

As for shady politics……well I think what we have here is a classic right wing devout catholic preaching to the masses. We should return to confession and ditch socialist workers? What?? A as many of you know I believe that Scotland is institutionally sectarian. However the other side of this coin is that the Catholic Church never did anything about it. James McMillan did speak out once. But the truth is the Catholic Church just wants to control its flock. It doesn’t actually care about them. So devout fascist Catholics like McMillan would rather not attack those who attack Catholics. Rather they desire us to return to chapel and vote and act as they are told.

I think the constant attacks on celtic fans from every angle, from the police, from the media, from the club and now from right wing Catholics is utterly astonishing. It’s also incredibly depressing.

There appears to be no second Age of Enlightenment of Scotland as we regress.

Vey sad mr McMillan, very sad.

  9. Good luck to the Hoops today ! No 2 son and lady of the manor in attendance today while I taxi no 1 to an u21 semi :( .

Had a wee chuckle on 28th anniversary of the Love St Kidd snatching ! Was on the park well after whistle with my young nephew on my shoulders no chance of that happening again as he’s a twenty plus stone lightweight now :)

Lastly always want the Toffees to win so if that red mob win the league so be it I just get the feeling the big fella upstairs may have designed it that way.

Incidentally I like Brendan Rogers a right good Celtic man Hail Hail NSNO

Probably because they are still banned ‘as a group’ and it’s not feasible to get tickets together where they are offered, as it’s too close to the Aberdeen fans.

  13. NegAnon2,

I haven’t had time to read MacMillan’s article. I am what is commonly called a practising Catholic but I have increasingly less agreement with his religious views. I would hope he doesn’t reflect that of the heierarchy as you seem to suggest.

Sorry, I have to go out. Really. But I don’t think MacMillan speaks for the Catholic Church on anything apart from, possibly, music.

Thank you, I’m well. There are three ports that accept cruise ships: Gdansk, Gdynia and Szczecin. Gdynia for example can accept cruise ships that are longer than 300 m. I was in Gdynia last year when they were unloading biggest container ship in the world (from China). Pitty you can’t see Gdansk. It’s wonderfull city.

  22. Fergus and James Macmillan have one thing in common in that while they are loved and hated in equal measure it is undeniable that they have greatly contributed to the advancement of the RC/Irish descended diaspora in Scotland.

Fergus for his achievements with Celtic and Macmillan for being the first high profile RC to speak about the taboo that was anti-Irish racism and anti-RC bigotry in Scotland.

His 1999 speech was greeted widley in Scotland with mockery of him as being paranoid. Now it seems pretty mild but then it was ground-breaking and brave.

About half a dozen diehards including me who never missed a game but swell

To about twenty on a good day.

Day of Love Street down the pub and talking about adventures from night before

Who did and didn’t pull up the dancing.

For once diehards were swithering would we go. As if while we had a chance

We went but frightened of today the END.

A guy who was older and had kids in our group and who rarely went and never in pub

With us just happened to be there. He said he knew we were going to win

He would drive and virtually dragged about 15 of us to my brothers van.

    Rest is history.

  25. Thunder Road on

There was something in the air that day and it is not hindsight that makes me say that…..i do not know what it was but there was definitely a feeling that something special was going to happen……the calm before the storm if you like.

I didn’t go to the game because i could not really afford it and spent so long deliberating with myself whether to actually go to Love Street or not that i left it too late and by the time i had legged it for the bus, i had missed it!

Went back home and paced my room, with the radio on, waiting for the game to begin.

When Kidd scored, i thought it was Walter Kidd and my heart sank thinking that Hearts were now going to win it after all we had done :(

I just sat on my bed stunned when it sank in that it was actually Albert for Dundee!

Even when the 2nd went in i was still so stunned by it all that i still just sat listening.

I still do not know if i was just too scared to celebrate in case i had it all wrong or not but i just sat on the edge of my bed listening intently!

No CQN updates in those days!
