Small investors in football clubs cannot overpay

1059

Really delighted at the flow of sentiment towards Billy McNeill and the launch of the new frontage of Celtic Park tomorrow.  The place is beginning to look like a 21st Century venue, now we need the shops, restaurants and bars to bring the match-day experience alive.

Were you one of the fans who put £620 (or more) into Celtic shares in 1994?  Around 10,000 did, raising an initial total of around £10m from small investors alone.  It wasn’t an investment, none of us wanted or expected the money back, it was our contribution to Celtic at a time of critical need.

Many small investor-Rangers fans did the same when Newco went to market in December 2012, although one high-profile investor, who coughed up £500k, has asked Dave King to buy him out.

The stark reality facing these shareholders is that if King’s path is followed to a logical conclusion the club will be run into the ground, destroying their investments along with everything else.  I have some sympathy for their position.

King is not interested in buying control of the club, even at the discounted price shares are now available at.  He emailed the £500k investor “Why should any new investor bail out existing investors because they made mistakes in overpaying for their shares. The club needs money not complaining shareholders”.

The price paid by small investors was perhaps the most irrelevant figure to them, they paid the gross figure they could afford, irrespective of price.  The value of the share was irrelevant so to accuse them of making a mistake by overpaying is like criticising the month of March for being too purple.

How the small shareholders feel about this behaviour will not determine what actions the Newco board takes, that will be come down to how easily manipulated people like the Easdales, Mike Ashley and Laxey Partners are.  My information is they are not easily manipulated in the slightest.

You can also consider having a “friend” at relevant meetings with their mob-handed team. Just someone you trust who will look them in the eye and say the right things for you. A not taker even. Be surprised if your company procedure doesn’t allow for that as these policies are designed to be bullet proof in any litigation.

    Good Luck

Dad (who, as a commercial fisherman has zero interest in football): “What for?”

Me: “It’s to invest in Celtic.”

Dad: “Aye, I’ll expect it back though.”

A good way to determine how strong your case is to talk initially with an Employment Lawyer who works on a no win no fee basis. There are some decent lawyers in Glasgow work on this basis. If they take you on be assured you will have a decent case. The first consultation is usually free regardless of what type of legal company you choose

Talk to your family about the situation first of all and if that’s not possible talk to a good friend and satisfy yourself that you have not behaved in a way that would allow your employer to take action against you. I understand your reluctance with the Union but if you can get a one to one with a Full Time Officer it might be more effective, with their clout and contacts, to reach an amicable arrangement with your employers .

Good Luck and a wee prayer that your situation is resolved.

    Regarding Wee Jamesie,

I think he is a real prospect when he is on his game, but, I do worry about him as an athlete.

Watch him run, and his arms and legs are all over the place – think how fast he would be if his body was properly synchronised?

Also, are our physios preparing him properly?

Very few of his injuries are contact injuries & it may be he needs a totally different stretching and warm up to someone like big Fraser, or, stefan Johansen?

  21. Martim – I’m concerned that your Union isn’t ‘involved enough’. If it is a Unionised work place, with proper Union recognition then you should have a Shop Steward/ Union Rep/ Official with you at any delicate meeting, particularly if it is very serious. Even if there is no official Union organised in your workplace you should go to them at every step for advice and guidance. The law isn’t cheap and that’s why we have things like Unions to protect us. Don’t be afraid to demand more of your Union if you think they aren’t being robust enough. If you feel there may be conflict of interest in the case of the workplace representation then go to the regional office or whatever the next step outside of the workplace Rep/ Shop Steward is who should be able to circumvent that. A rep should tell you that anyway.

I’m just covering bases here – some or none may apply. Do what you feel is best for you but personally, I’d be looking to the Union. Maybe there are other reasons why you can’t/ aren’t and fair enough. But although Unions have lost their political clout to a large extent, they are still quite strong on case work in day to day workplace disputes involving individuals. That said, you have to do what you are comfortable with.

Good luck with it all and, hard as it may be, try not to waste a weekend going over it in your mind. Do your paper work, get your stuff straight and you can do no more. Worrying about it wont resolve it.

The Irish have a great saying for it:

‘A man never ploughed a field turning it over in his mind’!!

Afternoon all. Been having a problem with the ole broadband.

Was listening to a kind of phone in on Radio Scotland this morning. It was concerned with Alex Salmond. He does hold some interesting views on the oddest of people. How anybody could trust him, if he really does hold those views is way beyond me. Having said that, the bulk of the contributors to the phone in were volubly doing precisely that.

    Parkheadcumsalford

I had to switch the radio off. In this day in age with 24hr news, radio phone-ins etc they have to fill the spaces with something.

CQN was set up because of statements and interviews by celtic staff which were then twisted to get a headline, a reaction etc.

Press conferences when WGS walked out, didnt show the 5 stupid questions he was asked before it.

If you see Salmonds quotes in full and in the proper context he is saying them in, e.g. the winter olympics, i dont see anything wrong with them.

Thanks. It’s complicated, there’s trust there with union just not availability. I’m trying to let tomorrows celebrations help take my mind of this. If there’s anything to help my mind rest it’s a big Celtic family day. I hummed and hawed about not going but I go and try and enjoy.
