Some play to pay bills, others for history

126

Amid the unseasonal, end of season, revelry at Celtic Park tonight there is a serious business to take care off on the park.  Dunfermline were two goals down and out of the game the last time they visited but a pot-shot from outside the box unsettled Celtic and gave the game a tense conclusion.

They are a team with everything to fight for; these guys are battling for their standard of living tonight.  Joint bottom of the league, they could all be out of a job within months, with consequences for mortgage repayments, the food they eat and the pay-TV they watch.  Appetite for a point will be enormous.

Neil Lennon will have to use different motivational techniques to stir his men, who will have no financial worries but must surely be desperate to establish their professional status as title winners.  Scott Brown suggest this was the best Celtic team he had played in, which is a big claim considering an earlier incarnation twice led Barcelona in the knock out stages of the Champions League.  His team mates can provide further evidence to back up that status tonight.

In a gesture which tests the boundaries of the word magnificent, the Celtic fan who paid £5000 towards the Vanessa Riddle Appeal for the signed Celtic jersey we auctioned last week asked us to put it back up for auction again.

Auctions are a magnificent way to help get Vanessa the lifesaving treatment she needs but the cost of participating at the business end soon gets out of the reach of many fans. With this in mind, we have started an eBay raffle; you can win the jersey for the cost of a £1, or the entire purchase price of Rangers FC PLC.

There are no excuses to sit this one out, Vanessa needs your help, you would like to own a signed Celtic jersey, and you too can afford the kind of money Craig Whyte used to buy Rangers. Click here to participate.

Thank you for the dozens of response to the request for writers for CQN Magazine. I’m still working through them, will be in touch soon. Issue six, our Fit and Proper edition, is set to become a landmark collectors item. A stunning act of generosity by the winner of the signed shirt. To re donate and ask that is raffled again to raise further funds is a display of class. One can never be too blasé over such a demonstration of anonymous generosity however I doubt any of us are surprised that this was the act of a Celtic fan. A big thank you to you; whoever you are. You epitomise everything that differentiates Celtic and its support from others. We are indeed “more than a football club”

Dear God Almighty!….this depraved saga just gets murkier & murkier. I can scarcely believe that this is allowed,in law,to happen. But then, what do I know? What lengths are the “we are the peepil” brigade going to be allowed to sink to in order to save this “treasured institution”? You’d think that a majority of Scotland’s population would be relieved to see a horde of maniacally fascist ‘football supporters’ disappear from their streets & that their raison d’etre be financially ruined & quietly leave the scene. But,no. The ‘highest in the land’ (in their minds, anyway) seem to want this ugly chimera to stalk Scotland in perpetuity. I know this has been a source of great schadenfreude for many of us since the bastards hit the buffers, but I sometimes despair at their mendacity. Oh well…

    Excellent points and long overdue.

TFOD going bust should be a wake up call to those in charge of the game and Celtic should push for a complete shake-up.

In addition to those measures, I think we as a club need to relinquish our unfair (and I think it is just that) share of TV money as well as re-structure the ranking payments so that the top 2 don’t share around a third of the prize money. To me this is an example of the “Old Firm” – a term which I view with complete disdain and disgust.

If TFOD are “Liquidised” (copyright Declan), as part of the charm offensice to get other SPL clubs to side with us (No to Newco), we as a club need to make 3 concessions:

    – More equitable distribution of TV money.

    – More equitable split of league money (based on no. of points attained?)

    – Removal of the veto (although with the removal of TFOD it’s possible that will go anyway.

I think this would encourage the other clubs to agree that, contrary to the apparently accepted wisdom, the SPL don’t need the huns.

Shoot me down if you want, but that’s the way I see it.

Those who believe that Craig Whyte is simply a devoted Rangers fan with fathomless wealth who is prepared to use a lot of it for the betterment of his team should ask to see evidence of his devotion to the club. How many years has he been a season ticket holder? Where are the photos of young Craig Whyte in his Rangers top? Before the information age, Celtic fans were assured of Fergus McCann’s bone fides within a couple of days of his name being mentioned in the media. The Scottish media have been strangely silent about the result of the investigations into the affairs of Craig Whyte.

Is Craig Whyte a heartless asset-stripper who will not waste valuable resources on legal fees for further appeals if HMRC win against Rangers in the First Tier Tribunal? Or is he a scene-stealing hero arriving to save the day? Rangers supporters groups who have lined up to celebrate the arrival of Whyte have failed their members by not doing their own due diligence on this man. Of course, in the absence of anyone else, they may feel that they have no choice.

The recurring theme of this blog is “it is all about the tax case”. This has not changed. A Whyte takeover will not alter the fate that awaits Rangers FC. All that will be changed is that people who would have been reluctant to be seen to bring down the axe on Rangers FC have been replaced by someone whom few of us know much about.

  25. Rangers Football Club is not a viable business Part IV

So yesterday good old Craig Whyte told us that Rangers were now on course to lose £15M this season after previously stating it would be £10M. From this I take it that they were set-up to make a profit from Champions League entry but a £10M loss from Europa League entry. With no Euro football it seems they make a £15M loss.

It’s looking increasingly unlikely that regardless of the Big Tax Case result Rangers will have no European football again next season. Whilst it’s the case that Ticketus have bought a block of season tickets from Rangers I imagine that the administration of these will still remain with Rangers, who will then pass the funds back to Ticketus, and that’s backed up by reports of Ticketus not getting their £9.3M in June last, and we can ignore Craig Whytes insistence that it was a 3 year not a 4 year deal, because it was already reported that the deal for the 4th year was separate. I suppose he’s technically correct but it’s disingenuous at best. So to get back on track if Rangers want to break even on no European football they need to slash costs by £15M+£9.3M Ticketus money (on the basis that payments are the same each year). That’s the entire wage bill.

Even if they somehow managed to gain a European license for next year, based on current figures they’d need to cut wages by £19M, but still maintain crowds of around 40k, whilst fielding a team of sub Hearts quality. I simply can’t see that happening.

I’ve gone out on a limb on posts of this nature before, and I shall do it again. Given what we know of Rangers losses, if they were to be run as a proper business with no ‘sugar daddy’ input I think that a 50k capacity Ibrox is unsustainable in the long term. A reduction to more like 30-35k is probably required, probably by removal of the upper tiers of all but the main stand.

  26. Fantastic response to the ebay signed top for vanessa. Incredible in fact. I think there’s a real space here for this type of “lottery” thing as well as the ocassional auction. I can’t remember who first suggested it way back but I thank you.

Had a query from one CQNer who’s looking to buy a few tickets and has unearthed an ebay issue I didn’t envisage. Say, you bought 5 tickets, the ebay system thinks this is 5 shirts, rather than 5 tickets and wants to charge you 5 x the postage for 5 shirts.

This is emphatically not the case and whatever number of tickets you buy, if you are the lucky winner you will only pay postage on one shirt. I’ll edit the item to make this clear but I can’t get access to ebay till tomorrow am.

  27. St Martin De Porres says at 10:06

“I know we are only a week into the crisis but is it fair to say that this administration is not following the previous trend with regards playing staff. I think i recall that lay offs with high wage players and especially inflated coaching staff were swift.

I don’t think 1st team managers have ever survived this process. I suspect the 1st team coaches at rangers are on 5 figure salaries and are far economical option than poor ally.”
