Some sympathy for Stewart Robertson

728

I know lockdown is causing much anxiety, but can you imagine being in Newco chief exec Stewart Robertson’s shoes these days?  He must have known the gig was up when he decided not to release his ‘evidence’ before clubs were able to send proxy vote to block his EGM resolution.

I’m sure he hoped the SPFL would announce they have enough votes in the bag, allowing him to flounce off, instead of substantiating his claim, but those he wanted sacked at the League will want to see this play out as much as the rest of us.

He even has Graeme Spiers calling him out as the weakest man he’s met in football.  For a man in his position, “weak” is the most damning word, it will resonate with those whose support he relies on.  And let’s not forget, he has tens of millions to find to continue trading though next season, by comparison, this SPFL mess is like a July Walk on the Queen’s highway.

From what I hear, Stewart is a decent bloke, one made for less complex times.  His strings are almost certainly being pulled by some sinister Geppetto character.  If he fails to produce his ‘evidence’, this afternoon’s Premiership club meeting will be an excruciating, if not humiliating, affair.  It will all be over soon, Stewart; you hang in there.

I’m sure we would all like to congratulate PSG on winning the ninth title in their history and seventh in eight years yesterday, apart from that Neymar character, of course.  The story for Scottish football in how the French league finished is the third place finish of Rennes – who could only manage a fourth place finish in the Europa League group Celtic topped.

While we are not in PSG’s class, we more than held our own against a French and Italian sides in the Europa League this season.  Like Celtic, Rennes will enter the Champions League qualification round next season.

  2. Interesting wee story in the Falkirk Herald this week, relating to the Battle of Falkirk III. Now I know a bit of Scottish History, but that was a new one on me. It was May 1961 and the battle was an end of season 5 a side tourney played at Brockville, the opponents were Celtic and Falkirk in the semi-final. Played on a full pitch. The score was Falkirk 4 Celtic 3. That wasn’t the result though, we lost, that was the number of players we had left on the pitch after the sendings off. There is a picture of the Celtic players involved accompanying the article, might surprise you to see who we sent through, and if there is anyone able to re-produce it here I would appreciate it.

  3. I think it’s always dangerous going on a programme to defend yourself. These guys close ranks once you are off the air defending yourself. In the 1:1 with Richard Gordon, Doncaster handed him his arse but, to be fair, Richard Gordon was unprepared and lacked the motivation to prove a point that maybe English has.

As soon as Doncaster left the 1:1 interview, the remaining non-interviewers English, Michael Stewart, Neil McCann and Willie Miller all ganged up to ask questions that they felt Richard Gordon had failed to ask. Most of them displayed an inability to listen with their ears open to what Doncaster had said. Forgiveable in the case of Miller and, maybe, McCann but English tied himself in knots, backtracking, on the issue of “Nobody’s talking about loans” when that was in fact the very terminology he had been using. You don’t get to live long in Tabloid journalism , the area English now inhabits, regardless of what platform he writes or speaks on, if you do not have a brass neck and a willingness to glide over your last expressed position. For God’s Sake we even have The Sun praising foreign nurses these days.

However, Michael Stewart had been listening and still had some relevant questions to ask. It would have been better all round if MS had conducted the Doncaster interview and the mics of English, Gordon, McCann and MIller remained mute before, during and after.

    Spectacularly mediocre they were.

    Hey D.

The main take, for me, from Petrie was that this years Scottish Cup will definitely be concluded, even if it takes to 2021.

Two games from a Quadruple treble.

  5. Doncaster said the SPFL are holding roughly £7m to be paid across the 12 premiership teams based on final league positions. He also said that positions 6-12 had been pretty much paid the majority of what they would receive via advanced payments. Below are the season ending prize payments for this year,

    1st – 13.40% – £3,350,000

    2nd – 9.60% – £2,400,000

    3rd – 8.25% – £2,062,500

    4th – 7.25% – £1,812,500

    5th – 6.75% – £1,687,500

    6th – 6.25% – £1,562,500

    7th – 5.75% – £1,437,500

    8th – 5.50% – £1,375,000

    9th – 5.25% – £1,312,500

    10th -5.00% – £1,250,000

    11th – 4.75% – £1,187,500

    12th – 4.50% – £1,125,000

So based on what Doncaster said, it would appear that teams in positions 6-12 have been paid somewhere around £1,125,000 and that the same amount has been paid to the teams in the top 6 as well through the normal payments system. Final positions will dictate the variance each club will receive.

BBC seem to be going over and over this without understating it. I think the misunderstanding is that the total prize pot is £25m. Only £7m of that is still to be paid and the spread is based on final league positions.

I’ve always thought that anyone still considering Brendan Rodgers a traitor has never heard of Maurice (Ratbag) Johnston

Should Brendan Rodgers be more respected more by Celtic Fans?

Yes, of course he should, consider what he done for us, invincible, trebles, sevco thrashings, etc

Should ex Celtic player Maurice Johnston be more respected by Celtic Fans?

…even the very name conjures up in my mind the image of a sleekit wee rat

he humiliated Big Billy in public – that alone to me was unforgivable,

sitting alongside Billy with his wife, declaring this was the only club he ever wanted to play for,

fast forward a couple of weeks and there he is now sitting alongside Graeme Souness, looking very much like the cat that got the cream

he enabled years of domestic domination by the old rangers, 9 in a row, thanks MJ

and of course said domination eventually led to the downfall of Big Billy,

    No comparison imo.

  10. Wee snippet

“The board was very sympathetic to the situation they found themselves in and decided in the case of Partick Thistle and Motherwell – Hamilton didn’t want to take an earlier fee payment – that those two clubs would be entitled to invoice them for £150,000 each, which they got earlier than other clubs.

“At the same time, Celtic actually agreed to forego £300,000 of fees that they would have received at that time. So there was no cash-flow impact from the league for the other 39 clubs at that time.

  12. Neil McCann not happy with SC being played to a conclusion 😂 two games from quadruple treble.

Btw Tom English grasp for detail is shocking. A school newspaper reporter would be embarrassed by his antics.

I’ve been looking for the recording on BBC Scotland.

I hope it is on their later Podcast.

I’d love to hear English’s frustration.

I’d be interested to know if the Sportsound approached Doncaster to give him right of reply or if he approached them.

Not for the first time Sportsound and Tom English have made complete fools of themselves.

If only they’d have shown this much endeavour back in 2012 when evidence of real corruption and abject governance was right in front of their noses.

Been watching ctv since three today and Harold has just scored that goal.

It still has me clapping and cheering 🍀👏👏

  16. Tom English’s behaviour in recent weeks in the carrying out of his duties as a BBC journalist takes some explaining.

Tom may be trying to be confrontational for the attention.

He may hope to build a good relationship with Ibrox for future work.

He may genuinely believe based on what he’s been told off the record that Sevco have ‘a smoking gun’.

Whatever the reason for his recent championing of the crusade against the SPFL, his reputation as a journalist lies in tatters. He along with Sevco will emerge from this much weaker and more isolated.

The spectacle of a BBC journalist going on radio to talk about ‘loans or advances, whatever you want to call it’ is breathtaking in its failure to grasp detail and the importance of that detail.

Tom, quite simply, is not an effective journalist.

  17. BBC Scotland are not impartial, they peddle one line for one club, dont know how an Irishman from Galway is so inclined to unquestioningly go along with it though, but he does and with great vigour to the point of looking stupid.

Thank you for that brilliant snippet.

In a nutshell – Celtic chose to defer receipt of money they were entitled to, in order to help the SPFL and other member clubs.

For any lurking halfwit who pretends to be a BBC Sport Scotland journalist …

…. See if you can find a single example of Sevco doing similar in their eight years of existence.

If you can, then feel free to ram your conspiracies down my throat.

An Irishman from Galway who wants to get ahead in his particular field in Presbyterian Scotland has to go above and beyond the bounds of objectivity.

  20. !!Bada Bing!! on

Why would English go into bat for Sevco? Truly baffling, going by their motives, and liars…..why? If he said he’s seen Sevco’s hand, and it will be a hand grenade, then could understand it.

  21. Bada

If they had anything of substance it would be known, all the heat from the media is to create pressure on certain individuals to the extent they walk, so far they haven’t.

  22. !!Bada Bing!! on

Dessybhoy- Doncaster must know that the huns have hee haw, otherwise he would still be hiding under his desk, instead of fronting it up and calling thems out.

  23. Bada

i agree, but Sevco don’t have enough placemen to do their bidding they are trying to create vacancies for their own, no doubt in my mind about this.

  24. Just watching the Celtic v Hearts from February 12 on YouTube.

It’s 1-0 at Half time. Lunch ready so I will resume watching after feeding my face.

Some attractive touches from our front two, Eddie and Leigh.

Meanwhile the Hun train seems to be getting a new head of steam as they lead Kilmarnock 1-0 at the half. At least according to their mouthpieces in the MSM.

    😉

  25. While I do agree that celtic’s stance of not commenting on any of the sevco bullshit is the correct one part of me wishes they could release a statement to the effect that for the best of scottish football it is time to move on :-)
