The biggest story in the Deloitte money league table, out this morning, is that of Milan and Inter, 14th and 19th place respectively. Inter are stuck between Everton (pining for a new stadium to remove the biggest inhibitor on revenue) and West Ham (soon moving to a new stadium).
Juventus are 10th and Roma 16th but that’s it for Italian clubs, who were able to attract the top talent from Law to Ronaldo and all generations in between. The fabled ‘lure of the lira’ wasn’t replaced by the lure of Italian stocked euros. Football in Italy is still a huge business, but the TV market is not as generous as the deal in the confederated league in England and Wales.
It’s not so long since Celtic regularly featured in Deloitte’s report but our TV revenues have stagnated while those elsewhere have grown considerably. We’ve recognised our place in the food chain, but next to slip off the list when the new English TV deal kicks in will be the big Milanese clubs. Good.
Celtic were first to suffer the consequences of the TV and football markets cartels. There’s little we can do about it alone, we need big clubs in big countries to also be unhappy at being pushed out of the tent.
We’ll soon read that Crystal Palace earn more money than Inter Milan. Experience suggests that football clubs, once disenfranchised in this manner, become advocates for change. Even those near the top, like Karl-Heinz Rummenigge’s Bayern Munich, are talking about a European league, as their domestic TV deal is holding them back.

His advice was stop drinking, exercise more and eat better- is there anyway I can achieve a lower B/P without these drastic measures? :D

If the NFL draft system was to be adopted. When would players be drafted?
Let’s say they are drafted when they are 18. Where do these lads play before they turn 18.
The SFA would need to put together some sort of league that is separate from the clubs, probably regional and would need to provide facilities better than the clubs.
I don’t see any sort of system working where Celtic would develop a player for 12 years and have him drafted to St Johnston without kicking a ball

The Continuation Jihadists
There are those within the Rangers community who have been targeting individuals whom they have identified as Rangers haters. Je Suis Graham and others with less intellect issued a statement that they had contacted The Belfast Telegraph and received assurances that they would not invite the freelance journalist Phil Mac Giolla Bhain to contribute any more articles on Rangers. They were lying. The editor of The Belfast Telegraph had never heard of them and reasserted her right to commission Phil Mac going forward.
Jim Spence also offended the ‘continuation jihadists’ by stating that Rangers were ‘deid’ in a radio broadcast. The backlash against him and his family led to police intervention to protect them.
Chris McLaughlin of the BBC is now banned at Ibrox for the second time. There is a petition from the jihadists to have him sacked from the BBC. Graham Spiers has never accepted the continuation narrative and has been banned from Ibrox.
An individual, or group, calling themselves Bears Fightback, announced themselves on Twitter with the alarming threat that they would target the families and children of any journalist who do not conform with their continuation mantra. Graham Spiers has contacted the police to identify and charge this/these individuals.
If anyone ever has the misfortune of listening to Radio Clyde on the commute home from the office, they will find a number of individuals who have been so indoctrinated by the continuation narrative that they lack objectivity. It’s a show of soundbites for those who would have difficulty constructing a sentence asking questions of the ‘high priest’ of the continuation narrative, Derek Johnstone.
In the ‘bears fightback’ statement, which I won’t cut and paste in full to deny them the oxygen of publicity, they posit that Rangers fans have been dragged from pillar to post and that they plan to retaliate against the ‘haters.’
The source of this problem is Charles Green, Alastair McCoist and subsequent administrations at Rangers. Charles Green is subject to criminal conspiracy charges. Counsel for Mr Green are at Aberdeen High Court this morning at the continuation of the precursor to his trial. Mr Green stated that he had bought the history of Rangers. In the bill of sale document there is a £1 charge for goodwill. This is the ‘evidence’ for continuation. Mr Green did not procure the history of Rangers, he procured some creats and trademarks, some of which date back to the sixties. He purchased these intangible assets for Sevco Scotland Ltd then subsequently remamed this company The Rangers Football Club Ltd. Alastair McCoist then stepped forward and was dismissive of the first team squad that found clubs elsewhere. Only fourteen players, who could not command a superior contract elsewhere, were prepared to TUPE to Sevco Scotland.
The Rangers continued narrative was a business tactic. More than 38,000 Rangers supporters were prepared to watch Rangers play against part-time teams in the lowest tier of Scottish professional football. Rangers were not demoted. The Rangers playing at Ibrox today is a phoenix company. These facts are unequivocal.
The reason why this marketing artifice is now in the hands of the police is that there are those within the Rangers community who are prepared to defend the myth of continuation with their liberty. The more informed and intelligent Rangers supporters know that the current company, technically and legally, is not the same company that ceased to trade in 2012. The Rangers is the spiritual successor of the company I followed as a boy. Given a choice of no Rangers, or THE Rangers, I choose the latter.
At this point in my thesis, the baggage of the old company rears its ugly head. DOS/EBT, tax avoidance, match fixing, governance collusion, the LNS debacle, the fine that no-one will pay. This is what’s at the forefront of all discussions of the old company. Frankly, would it not be in the best interests of Rangers supporters to distance themselves from this impropriety and malfeasance?
The thorny issue here is the historical achievement of the former company. The current Rangers supporters wish to retain these as a badge of honour. They wish to assert these achievements to put CFC in their place. Supporters of CFC and other clubs are not prepared to accept this continuation narrative. Some of them constructed a logical rebuttal to the continuation narrative in an advertisement in The Herald.
As a Rangers supporter I celebrate the achievements of the company I followed until 2012. I refer to them as a club, but I know that they were a professional company. The Rangers that I follow today is a new company who embody the traditions of Rangers. I would have preferred that some of these traditions were left in the past.
One of these is the proscribed anthem the Billy Boys. It’s an odious anthem that celebrates an odious individual. The advocates of the razor gang the Brigton Derry Boys attended Rangers games in the 1920s and 1930s. They sang the following song

Those who wished to distance themselves from this anthem
created an alternative Rangers-specific version:

The latter did not have traction. ‘Give anything’ does not exactly roll off the tongue. Je Suis Graham created a narrative that the lyrics that were chanted at Ibrox in the game against Hibs were ‘We are up to our knees in EBTs.’ He was lying, again, but on this occasion he may be on to something. EBTs works. It ticks the boxes of the continuation jihadists and puts CFC noses out of joint. Their impotence to address title stripping is brought in to sharp relief.
Rangers are not an annexe of the Orange Order, or terrorust organisations. We should not be celebrating King William III or Billy Fullerton. The sooner these chants and the intimidation of journalists ends, the better. I am a Rangers supporter. I defer to the Queen and I am a unionist. These are my traditions. If Rangers wish to be accepted and respected in Scottish and European football we must distance ourselvces from the jihadists and recidivists.

Firstly, so what if Crystal Palace or any other English minnow becomes more wealthy than Italian clubs, entitlement is something I’m no too fussed about, if the Italians can’t keep the game honest and civilised then hell mend them.
Secondly, the draft scheme is dangerous for Scotland, imagine how many young talents would be ruined because they ware allocated to a club with second rate coaches and training facilities, yo yoking between leagues when they should be getting picked up by the best with a chance to improve by playing against and with the best.

They failed to make the play-offs this year too.
Maybe the draft stops it from being about who has the most money in the NFL at least?

He appeared in the same hotel as me and my wife with his ‘partner’ many years ago while he was still a player. Coincidentally a then Partick thistle player also appeared with his wife. We got chatting and all confessed to having football withdrawl so we asked the waiters for a game of fives. They arranged minibus etc and off we set , our team made up with a couple of handy Glasgow Junior players.
I think we touched the ball about 5 times each as we were absolutely destroyed. The game had been played on a loser pays basis. Later transpired their ‘waiters’ were all pro players – at that time not uncommon for pros to work in hotels in the summer ( 20 yr + ago)..
What was more interesting when we returned home was to see GO’B and his partner across front pages of the papers – he had been caught having a bit of extra curricular…

If we were short of midfield players then we shouldn’t be contemplating selling SJ. However we have a surplus of them, with another training with us, and SJ isn’t the best player we currently have in any of the midfield positions. This is the situation where we should be looking to move players on, at the right price, not when we have a shortage like in central defence in the summer.

Football Finances – The Celtic Decline.
Some would have us believe that due to the market we operate in, the constrictive practice of not being allowed to properly trade in another league set up, and the dreadful media deals, well, we are lucky to have Peter Lawell in place, to keep us afloat.
I am hugely interested therefore in the Golden Ticket that would have been entry to the EPL even at the lowest level and working our way up.
With all the business clout of Desmond, OBrien, Quinn, and others, why didnt we get there ?

For me its a strategy fail. These guys failed and should have sold up and moved on.
I noted Arsenal are now the matchday revenue kings of the world, some £100m taken last season.
On a revenue of £300+ million. Imagine that, they are now 6 times the revenue of Celtic.
Just imagine where they would have been had PL taken that job, they would at least be half their size.

Reading Deloittes, its not all about the TV deals. Yes offcourse the Commerical sponsorships are mutually inflated when on tv. but all things considered, I dont see an end to it. Only Growth.
Lots of the clubs are managing debt well. Its used for growth strategies now, not allways player purchase.
The best have balanced incomes streams MEDIA / COMMERCIAL SPONSORSHIP / MATCH DAY (profits) / PLAYER TRADING …… and the new kid on the block real diversification to Property.
Man City – that football complex, plus expanding stadium to 58,000
Chelsea, – wheels in motion for a 60,000 STADIUM REBUILD.
Tottenham – Lillywhite development, then 60,000 NEW STADIUM.
Liverpool – Anfield Project with local government and mixed use environment with 58,000 stadium.
Newcastle – proposals for further stadium exapnsion to 61,000.
and the one i see with the most potential –
West Ham, 56,000 relocation, with a lot of the costs not theirs.
What interests me is the clubs in London appear to have another advantage. CORPORATE LONDON will pay premium plus prices, for any seat.
We are on a downward spiral, we cant compete.

A daring business owner would have got a Celtic into England in any way possible.
Bought Carlisle, built the stadium right on the border, half in england/half in scotland. and applied to start in the bottom tier. If we did that in 2001, we would be in the top league now.
