Soon you’ll read Crystal Palace earn more than Inter

645

The biggest story in the Deloitte money league table, out this morning, is that of Milan and Inter, 14th and 19th place respectively. Inter are stuck between Everton (pining for a new stadium to remove the biggest inhibitor on revenue) and West Ham (soon moving to a new stadium).

Juventus are 10th and Roma 16th but that’s it for Italian clubs, who were able to attract the top talent from Law to Ronaldo and all generations in between. The fabled ‘lure of the lira’ wasn’t replaced by the lure of Italian stocked euros. Football in Italy is still a huge business, but the TV market is not as generous as the deal in the confederated league in England and Wales.

It’s not so long since Celtic regularly featured in Deloitte’s report but our TV revenues have stagnated while those elsewhere have grown considerably. We’ve recognised our place in the food chain, but next to slip off the list when the new English TV deal kicks in will be the big Milanese clubs. Good.

Celtic were first to suffer the consequences of the TV and football markets cartels. There’s little we can do about it alone, we need big clubs in big countries to also be unhappy at being pushed out of the tent.

We’ll soon read that Crystal Palace earn more money than Inter Milan. Experience suggests that football clubs, once disenfranchised in this manner, become advocates for change. Even those near the top, like Karl-Heinz Rummenigge’s Bayern Munich, are talking about a European league, as their domestic TV deal is holding them back.

Magners Ticket Competition

Fancy two Premium Seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s game against St Johnstone, courtesy of Magners? You can win by answering this question, which will hopefully bring back some memories:

We said “Cheerio to 10-in-a-row” on 9 Mary 1998, but just before halftime that day, a St Johnstone player went within inches of equalising with a header. Who was that player?

Send his surname in the subject line of an email to celticquicknews@gmail.com to enter.

And while you are at it, why don’t you put a £1 into our Mary’s Meals school kitchen appeal here…

  5. Paul, no one has been in touch (they can get my e-mail from you i’m sure) to assure me the £1000 got to TB’s charity as yet?

  6. If you suffer podium anxiety, simply filter everybody above you out and you’ll always be first. Huzzah!

I didn’t say they had dominated the Superbowl, I said they had dominated their equivalent of a league, the AFC, which you have to win to get to the Superbowl.

Their domination or otherwise has to be viewed in the context of the draft system, which is designed to stop one team dominating their league, which they are one game away from winning for the 8th time since 1997.

  9. Reading a lot about posters leaving, changes in Blog Etc Etc.

I look in to the blog each day. as in the whole I find it informative,as comments are from like minded Celtic fans.

It is an excellent facility and on the odd occasion its down,or my technical ability is stretched and I cant log in,it is a problem as other blogs tend to be more sensationalised and the language of many not to my taste.

For me, I hope Paul 67 continues providing us with this facility and is not put off by adverse comments.

the New England Patriots hardly won anything until 1997, they’ve lucked out since then in having the best coach and then the best qb, which obviously helps when trading rather than drafting players.

The SFA/SFL’s proposed draft system of youth players is a brilliant idea, but ideally it would be linked to preventing the SPL sides from buying a promising player from Queen’s Park, for instance, only to then leave them in the stands.

If the scheme is a serious one, it should like the draft system with imposing penalties on sides further up the chain then buying the player only to leave them in the stands or warming the bench. I would suggest fines reduced by increasing game time for the new player over the period of the subsequent two transfer windows.

I was being flippant about the use of the word clique on here,

CQN corner the hoots ,the golf and many other gatherings on here may not be for everyone but they are open to all on here.

The EPL is becoming a bigger and bigger monster all the time. Don’t see it ending any time soon or that anything can be done about it.

I don’t think it can possibly work here, with employment laws as they are. We’d need youth players contracted to the SPFL rather than the teams etc, etc. It’d be a nightmare.

  16. Good Afternoon.

You may have seen the continuing fuss about the BBC refusing to send people to Ibrox after Chris McLaughlin was banned (again). A group calling itself Bears Fightback is behind a petition to have him removed from his position. Their website (now removed) contained all sorts of menacing language about coming after people who besmirch Sevco.

Here is a piece about that…

yep! there also self interested clubs to think about irrespective of the complete lack of talent coming through…, for every Hamilton producing a reasonable return on their youth systems, there are 20 who don’t, but that still won’t stop them complaining about it

i beg to differ, there are a few ongoing unsavoury incidents

there was one time i tried to source a SAINT STIVS beanie,

and a guy tried to pass me off a ST STIVIS one as “an original”.

then there is the ongoing turf-war between the “badge” gangs,

nasty nasty personal stuff “them designs are sub standard and the alloys are toxic”. i heard that once.

dont get me started on the “bucketeers”, muscling in , every game, someone promoting some good casue, and we all fall for it .

then there are th e”petioneers”, agressivly pushing pens in peoples faces for genuine causes

makes me sick so it does.

As I said in my original post, limited knowledge on this, but interesting that the pundits on the BBC NFL were discussing it, as Weeminger said.
