Spartak sack manager Emeri after derby defeat

871

Spartak Moscow today sacked manager Unai Emeri after a 1-5 home league defeat against eight placed Dinamo Moscow.  Spartak are confirmed as bottom of Celtic’s Champions League group before they head to Celtic Park for the final game on 5 December.

Emeri has been increasingly unpopular since taking over earlier this year when his spell at Valencia ended, while rumours of dissent in the dressing room were never far away.  I had hoped he would remain in place for the visit to Glasgow but there will be a new man in charge by then.

A group of around 200 supporters demonstrated after the game, many chanting for the foreign players to ‘Go home’.

Thanks for bringing that article to us.

I think Jim McGuinness’s signing will prove to be one of those magical, serendipitous wee happenchances that seem to have occurred so regularly throughout the history of Celtic.

There is some kind of magic at work here.

The tragic demise of Belfast Celtic sent Charlie Tully to where destiny meant him to be…

A wee, comical looking Canadian business man turned up when all seemed lost…

A big, masonic Rangers supporter was brought in as a stop-gap centre half…

I think having Lenny as our manager, just when a Gaelic football Svengali was changing the face of Irish sport might be another ‘unbelievable coincidence.’

    I have a Dream…

  5. It’s interesting to see long-range weather forecasts – FWIW, I know – predicting lots of heavy duty wintry stuff for early new year.

And the Armageddon-plagued SPL has insanely planned a winter break between Jan 2 and Jan 19.

    What were they thinking?

Last time there was a winter break (MON’s first season?) the topics on the ole Huddleboard got pretty esoteric.

Could be even more interesting this time round…Mayans permitting of course:)

You know I do not agree with hidden conspiracy theories but that comment tonight was not directed at you. The Moon Howler was the guy(s) who tried to rope the far too wily Zbyszek into his apolitical right wing fantasy.

We have outlined our differences in viewpoint before and I do not see any purpose in going there again. Besides canamalar is keeping you busy enough.

  15. Under Jock Stein Celtic established a reputation as a team who “did not play friendlies.”

He was able to make them take a pre-season friendly against Stranraer seriously. He didn’t have any qualifications in sports pysychology.

Talk of physique and fitness as in the Jim McGuniess article is a retreat into what can be measured. Like pedometers to see how much ground a player covers. It means nothing.

How do you measure a drop of the shoulder, a feign?

Teddy Sheringham covered little ground and was always to be found on the same spot. It was when he expended a little energy and went AWOL that the opposition were banjaxed.

Jimmy Johnstone and Bobby Lennox were not fine physical specimens. Nor did they sport a nasty sneer or an agressive snarl. No. They had smiles on their faces. And far worse habits …

I watched Ronald Koeman walk the fifty yards to take a free kick v Sampdoria in 1992. I thought he was never going to get there. But I knew he was going to score.

Can textbook theory make a player volunteer to take a penalty?

  21. Archie Gemmil on his scouting days.

“When I started scouting we wanted to know – Can he control the ball? Can he pass the ball? Has he vision? If the answer to any one was yes then it was worth a look.

    Latterly I’d be told He’s big, he’s strong. He’s fast. He’s athletic.

I wouldn’t get a look in these days.”

In football as in so many other spheres we have a tick box approach. It lets people off from taking a risk.

  22. Ntassoolla,

A retreat into the measured. Nice phrase.

Think it’s a further application of Moneyball theory, which has done us not too bad so far.

This constant searching in well-rewarded, globalised sports for that extra something, that edge, can be pretty unedifying, and will continue to throw up situations whereby the original spirit of the sport in question seems to have been set aside.

There is now a school of thought in golf that youngsters should grunt, a la Monica Seles, when they hit the ball, for example.

In football I think there is a definite rise of the athlete, ‘upper-body strength’, yaddah yaddah.

Big EPL teams are literally that.

Funny you should mention Sheringham. Went round a golf course in a group with him once – his ‘mental toughness’ was way above and beyond the other players, all ex-pros of a similar level.

So I would say the inner strength he possessed is something Jim McGuinness can teach…

    Enjoy your posts

It was posted ….??????…….god help us …..!!!!!

  24. Looking at other teams outwith the big 4 leagues and see how well they are juggling CL competition with their domestic leagues

    Ajax are joint 4th

Anderlecht are 4 points clear in 1st

Nordsjaeland are 9 points behind in joint 2nd place

Olympiakos are 8 points clear in 1st place in Greece

Porto & Benfica are joint 1st, Braga 9 points shy in 3rd

Galatasaray are 1st by 2 points

Shaktar are 14 points clear of Kiev

Zenit are 3rd, and Spartak 7th, 6 and 10 points adrift

Cluj are 4th and 13 points behind

Bate are 1st- 7 points clear

Zagreb are 1st- 8 points clear

    In the big leagues:-

    EPL teams are 1st, 2nd 4th and 6th

    La Liga teams are 1st, 3rd, 4th and 11th

    Serie A are 1st and 8th

    Bundesliga are 1st, 2nd and 3rd

    Ligue 1 are 1st, 9th and 12th

So there is quite a mixed picture.

Some teams have used regular CL success to dominate their league. Others have found it difficult to combine the two.

Celtic currently are 1st in their league and favourites to reach the last 16.

  25. TootingTim thanks.

There are just some players who have something that sticks in your mind.

I mentioned four of them above.

Bertie Auld and Bobby Murdoch had disarming smiles that often left their opponents in stitches. Or worse.

I’d pay good money to hear Bertie talk to a sports psychologist.
