St Johnstone 0-2 Celtic

609

Celtic were always in control against St Johnstone in Perth this afternoon and deservedly picked up the three points although it took them almost an hour to open the scoring.  Gary Hooper knocked in a loose ball on 59 minutes before Ki Sung-Yeung finished off a sweeping Celtic brea five minutes later.

St Johnstone kept things tight early on and kept Celtic from creating a chance before Georgios Samaras created space for a shot which was saved well by Enckelman.  Celtic’s best move of the first half came after 31 minutes when Ki, Forrest and Brown combined to release Hooper.  The striker shot low and on target but Enckelman pulled off a remarkable save.

Both teams picked up the pace after half time but it was Mackay who created the first chance of the second period, forcing a save from Fraser Forster.  Cha DuRi twice crossed dangerously.  Firstly for Hooper, whose hooked effort from 4 yards was turned over by the impressive Enckelman.   James Forrest then turned a snatched chance over from Cha’s next effort.

Just before the hour Charlie Mulgrew dropped a corner into the six yard box which Victor Wanyama contested.  The ball dropped between a sea of St Johnstone legs but Hooper was onto it in a flash and prodded over.

The game was put beyond the home team five minutes later.  St Johnstone were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Celtic penalty area after Mulgrew was penalised for climbing.  The Celtic was stood strong and from the subsequence block James Forrest drove forward at pace.  Samaras returned a 1-2 to Forrest to drew Enckelman before squaring for the unmarked Ki.  The Saints’ keeper did well but could not prevent Ki’s shot from crossing the line.

Samaras mishit a shot after the impressive Cha again crossed to effect before the Greek striker ran 40 yards and had his shot blocked.

St Johnstone’s only real chance fo the game came when Wanyama slipped to let Haber close in on Forster but the keeper was equal to the shot.

I wouldn’t be surprised either. Ponder for a moment that Sir Fred Godwin will always keep his knighthood and you realise how perverse that whole pantomime is.

  5. The loss of big Dan could prove vital for the game against Dignity, Swally will go for it with a 4-3-3 which turns into. 4-5-1 when the ball is lost. His plan will be to prevent our full backs coming forward and forcing the play, while playing jellylegs on the weaker of our 2 centre halfs. Team selection for us at the back will be key and we cannot nderestimate Dignity, as I suspect that they will come and frustrate a la Hearts recently, and given their small playing pool they are crawling through games at the moment, so they will up the pace on the 28th.

if we start quickly and knock Dignity out their stride then their dire form will continue and they will be unable to raise their game, 3-0 to the good ghuys, Dignity down to 9 men, Wallace and Laugherty to be dismissed and Jelavic carried off on a stretcher

What’s the betting that it is a case of ‘Arise Sir Wattie’ in next week’s New Year’s Honours, or if you like Dishonours list.

Strong rumours Wattie (and also big Eck) are linked to the – 2 contracts Tax scam so I doubt a knighthood. Only need 100,000 e:petition signatures to get Parliament/Disclosure Commitee to look at Murrays knighthood once his part in the tax scam is fully revealed.

  7. The wee highlights package at least shows that Inverness were not guilty of one failing we often ascribe to opponents when facing Rangers, in contrast to when they face Celtic.

We often have the impression that the men possessed who fly into every tackle in games against Celtic as though their lives depended on winning the ball or at least halting progress for Celtic are magically transformed into ladies’ formation country dance teams when they are up against Rangers.

The brief highlights suggest the Inverness lads put in some meaty challenges on Saturday. Fair play, sometimes bordering on not being.

You’re not quite correct there. ‘Drawing the foul’ means that there has actually been a foul, so while highlighting it isn’t perhaps the way the game was played in the past, it’s still not cheating. Falling over when no foul has been committed would be cheating.

  9. I’ve got a confesion (sorry to wind you up again Gerald 766, you had a right go the last time I made one), I’ve just scoffed all me celtic advent calendar chocolates !!

dreadful, good, if we can keep this level of commitment , I think we’ll win the league.

  10. Steinreignedsupreme on

Another solid performance yesterday for Celtic and the confidence is clearly visible throughout the team. It is just a matter of time before we go top of the table and the Huns know it as well.

Things are certainly improving at certain levels within the SFA – and the new fast-track disciplinary system deserves due praise.

On the pitch though Scottish football is still light-years away from achieving fairness for all. Bobby Madden’s performance at Ibrox on Saturday, disallowing two stonewall penalties and chalking off a legitimate goal – all for the benefit of Rangers – was a performance worthy of the Sinister Minister himself.

When you need those favours to beat a team struggling against relegation then things are already desperate.

  14. If there’s one thing they can’t stand its a Celtic player going in hard, and Big Dan was until yesterday was always the focus of snide incompetency claims in the press.

Pity as he was on his best run in the side, and no coincidence in the current atmosphere of administration, he’s suddenly a villain for winning a ball in the air, hard and fair.

Celtic’s depth of squad could be crucial, Charlie Mulgrew to switch to CB or the fit again Kelvin Wilson as a straight swap and come January another Swedish International, Mikael Lustig to take his place.

It’s the big calls that referees in Scotland have been conditioned to be terrified of giving against Rangers and of giving for Celtic.

This, precisely this, is what the refereeing scandal is all about.

It’s heads Celtic lose, tails Rangers win.

This is why, in the midst of the saga of strikes and scandal last season Paul 67 correctly suggested that a solution would be for thousands of Celtic fans to sign up today to become referees and work their way through the system.

I can’t see Walter getting a knighthood after his antics at McDiarmid Park, but then I wouldn’t have thought he would get an OBE after that incident either.

Just imagine Neil had fought with Lomax at half time yesterday.

Got arrested, charged, thrown out of the stadium by the police at half time and not allowed to return until an hour after the match.

Do you think that would have been reported widely? Do you think Neil would have been considered for a gong if he had done this? See: http://www.scribd.com/doc/58617255/Walter-v-Totten-Fight

As for having Murray’s knighthood taken off him it would be nice to do this if he has cheated Her Majesty out of revenue required for our schools, hospitals, etc. But anyone who participated in the Tax scam (more of a crime than a scam) should face the music too.

Statistically there is a 1 in 8 probability of this happening.

An 87.5% probability that AT LEAST ONE of the decisions should go for ICT. But not in Scotland

    Monday December 19 2011

FIFA has been called to settle a dispute between the Irish and Scottish football associations after it emerged that the heavily indebted FAI owes the SFA €1.4m.

The sum due to the Scots, dating back to last summer’s Carling Nations Cup tournament, remains unpaid and after the FAI missed last week’s payment deadline set by the SFA, Hampden Park chiefs have decided to call in the world governing body.

SFA chief executive Stewart Regan has made repeated efforts to resolve the situation, but with none forthcoming, the matter has been referred to a FIFA Arbitration Panel.

Sources close to the Scottish chief said attempts to contact FAI counterpart John Delaney, in a bid to settle the matter privately, have been unsuccessful.

It is understood the FAI are waiting for payments relating to their Euro 2012 qualification to land in their bank account before settling the outstanding debt with the Scots.

Neither the FAI nor the SFA would comment on the issue when contacted last night.

The FAI are burdened with substantial debt as part of their commitment to the Aviva Stadium.

Delaney said earlier this year that the association owes €50m to the banks.

Poor sales of 10-year tickets left the FAI well short of projections, but Delaney insists the FAI will be debt-free by 2020.

Qualifying for next summer’s finals was a big boost to Abbotstown chiefs, but cost-cutting measures have continued in recent months.

A substantial chunk of the €8m figure for making a major tournament will be eaten up by bonuses and expenses.

Delaney hoped to stage a money-spinning friendly with England before the competition, but the English FA have delayed a promised visit until a later date.

Good Morning to the Celtic Family from a wet Central Scotland. With the game with the Poundland team approaching we must go into it in a confident mood but not over confidence.Rangers like every other team we play will lift there game and although they dont appear to be a particularly good side at the moment you can bet your mortgage they will be a different side on the 28th.Win lose or draw the league is not over after this one game there is still a long way to go to the finishing line and 3 points against Killie this week and a slip up at Paisley for them would set the game on 28th up very nicely.H.H.
