St Johnstone 0-2 Celtic

609

Celtic were always in control against St Johnstone in Perth this afternoon and deservedly picked up the three points although it took them almost an hour to open the scoring.  Gary Hooper knocked in a loose ball on 59 minutes before Ki Sung-Yeung finished off a sweeping Celtic brea five minutes later.

St Johnstone kept things tight early on and kept Celtic from creating a chance before Georgios Samaras created space for a shot which was saved well by Enckelman.  Celtic’s best move of the first half came after 31 minutes when Ki, Forrest and Brown combined to release Hooper.  The striker shot low and on target but Enckelman pulled off a remarkable save.

Both teams picked up the pace after half time but it was Mackay who created the first chance of the second period, forcing a save from Fraser Forster.  Cha DuRi twice crossed dangerously.  Firstly for Hooper, whose hooked effort from 4 yards was turned over by the impressive Enckelman.   James Forrest then turned a snatched chance over from Cha’s next effort.

Just before the hour Charlie Mulgrew dropped a corner into the six yard box which Victor Wanyama contested.  The ball dropped between a sea of St Johnstone legs but Hooper was onto it in a flash and prodded over.

The game was put beyond the home team five minutes later.  St Johnstone were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Celtic penalty area after Mulgrew was penalised for climbing.  The Celtic was stood strong and from the subsequence block James Forrest drove forward at pace.  Samaras returned a 1-2 to Forrest to drew Enckelman before squaring for the unmarked Ki.  The Saints’ keeper did well but could not prevent Ki’s shot from crossing the line.

Samaras mishit a shot after the impressive Cha again crossed to effect before the Greek striker ran 40 yards and had his shot blocked.

St Johnstone’s only real chance fo the game came when Wanyama slipped to let Haber close in on Forster but the keeper was equal to the shot.

  1. Morning all, another fine performance yesterday from the players, supporters and the manager, onward and upward.

Just a thought, does anyone else think that the sectarian supervisor might still be doing his job in Scotland, sort of unofficiALLY, you know like a quiet

wee word here and there amongst the brethren, just saying like.

    Hunt them all Celtic.

  2. Guy in the pub last night was talking about some rc pilgrimage to Dunfermline that took place in the 50s/60s. Something to do with the remains of queen margaret. Folk had a mass at east end park. Anyone the wiser?

The Dunfermline Pilgrimage was the annual Scottish National Pilgrimage in honour of St. Margaret. I think she is buried in Dunfermline Abbey. It ran for a number of years up to the 60s. It was a real day out in Dunfermline with Mass at East End Park with all the hierarchy in attendance – pretty much a sell out as I remember. I went a number of times as a boy. The National Pilgrimage now takes place annually at Carfin.

PS. Maybe it was stopped because of the sectarian singing!!:-)

Guidolin made a lot of very favorable comments about Celtic but he absolutely ranted about how dreadful the officials had been. .

Di Natale said it was a game which had given him much pleasure —-” it was fun , it was played in a good spirit , it reminded me of the games I played before I became a professional ”

Udinese had a hard fought 2-2 away to Lazio yesterday . A result that sees them slip to 3rd place —- 2 points behind leaders Juve who they play on Wednesday.

Went to Catania 2 —- Palermo 0 yesterday . No away support allowed. Good goal from the about to be sold to Milan – Maxi Lopez and a fabulous shift from the Argentinian -Almiron, who will go on to play for a much bigger team than Catania .

The game was a lively ,political affair – Fireworks, smoke bombs and no shortage of discriminatory /political chanting including ————

” We eat pasta ——–You eat cous-cous “.

Sunny ,clear blue sky , cold wind from the Balkans , a feels cold 8 degrees -way down south.

That’s true. Dunfermline was the burial place of St Margaret, patroness of Scotland, and has been a pilgrimage site for centuries.

In the 1930s, there was a revival of public pilgrimages, in November for the feast of St Margaret (16 November) and in June too. I think it was the June one that used to culminate in Mass at East End Park. In the 1970s, the football ground ceased to be used for this and this “national pilgrimage” transferred to the shrine at Carfin, but thousands of people attended Mass at East End Park over the years.

So, yesterday’s game was a controversial one with 2 big talking points.

Meanwhile an incident free game occurred at Ibrox.

Even Kim Jong Il couldn’t have made this up.

    ………………..

    There was 2 controversial incidents?

    What the hell were they?

  7. Good morning folks from a cold and wet Gourock…

After watching the huns cheating again (No other definition possible) there is no chance we will win this league. The Lisbon lions in their hey day would find winning this league a task too far…

    Frightening…

I remember a pilgrimage big jonnybhoy and I made 4 Februarys ago at 7am to Fife, 18 holes at Aberdour then off to East End Park with centre stand tickets and watching the hoops pummel the Pars 8-1 with a goal from wee Lenny.

That, the 6-2 game and the birth of my eldest. All great, great days.

    1) Celtic won

    2) The points gap did not widen

    That was all!

Daunting as the cheating may be, we cannot afford to give in to the loser mindset of “We’ll never be allowed to win it”

I want a level playing field but, in its absence, I want us to win under these handicaps.

  11. The only answer to the cheating is the one we gave yesterday, after Mr Norris had manufactured a scoring chance for Saints we went up the park and scored!!

Big Jock knew this as did Martin and Gordon.

Well played Neil and the Bhoys yesterday, that’ll do nicely.

It’s not the huns who are cheating, it’s the officials.

  13. Watching the game and big Dan’s header was one hundred percent legit. He went in with conviction and took the ball cleanly. It was their player (Robertson?) who made contact with Dan, not the opposite.

It was not, nor even close to, a Cousin like – I’m going to put you out for ever Mick – challenge.

If you steer the ball out the park with your hand you are cheating. If you pull the attacker on the blind side of the referee and throw your hands up as if you didn’t you are cheating. The referee is complicit.

They probably sense they will get away with things others won’t, but other than the diving, they’re not cheating.

It’s the officials who are cheating.

Then in that case every player and every team that commits a foul is cheating.

Correct, to foul intentionally is cheating, punishable by free kick, caution or sending off.

I was a wee bit drunk when speaking to you. I was put on to this guy on the phone last night thru a mutual friend.

They are both cheating! The difference is we are used to players cheating on a regular basis and to many (too many) that is acceptable. Referees cheating is another matter altogether .

Funnily enough I remember Stan being fouled a lot!

Raising your flag for an offside that was not offside is cheating. The Rangers players were not complicit, though of course compliant, as we all would be, if ever given the opporchancity.
