St Johnstone 0-2 Celtic

609

Celtic were always in control against St Johnstone in Perth this afternoon and deservedly picked up the three points although it took them almost an hour to open the scoring.  Gary Hooper knocked in a loose ball on 59 minutes before Ki Sung-Yeung finished off a sweeping Celtic brea five minutes later.

St Johnstone kept things tight early on and kept Celtic from creating a chance before Georgios Samaras created space for a shot which was saved well by Enckelman.  Celtic’s best move of the first half came after 31 minutes when Ki, Forrest and Brown combined to release Hooper.  The striker shot low and on target but Enckelman pulled off a remarkable save.

Both teams picked up the pace after half time but it was Mackay who created the first chance of the second period, forcing a save from Fraser Forster.  Cha DuRi twice crossed dangerously.  Firstly for Hooper, whose hooked effort from 4 yards was turned over by the impressive Enckelman.   James Forrest then turned a snatched chance over from Cha’s next effort.

Just before the hour Charlie Mulgrew dropped a corner into the six yard box which Victor Wanyama contested.  The ball dropped between a sea of St Johnstone legs but Hooper was onto it in a flash and prodded over.

The game was put beyond the home team five minutes later.  St Johnstone were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Celtic penalty area after Mulgrew was penalised for climbing.  The Celtic was stood strong and from the subsequence block James Forrest drove forward at pace.  Samaras returned a 1-2 to Forrest to drew Enckelman before squaring for the unmarked Ki.  The Saints’ keeper did well but could not prevent Ki’s shot from crossing the line.

Samaras mishit a shot after the impressive Cha again crossed to effect before the Greek striker ran 40 yards and had his shot blocked.

St Johnstone’s only real chance fo the game came when Wanyama slipped to let Haber close in on Forster but the keeper was equal to the shot.

  1. Just listening to Mike Harding’s Folk Music show in the BBC listen again thingy.

I hope the SFA, SPL and UEFA don’t listen to it. Incredibly offensive stuff from the BBC (Rob McClean and Pat Nevin will no doubt be chasing Harding for his life when they hear about the song he played last wednesday)

Followed by the introduction about Planxty’s ‘fantastic version’ of the ‘Old Rebel Song’ (I quote from the BBC employee there) he played ‘Follow me up to Carlow’ which contains the great line ‘Now for Black Fitzwilliams head, we’ll send it over dripping red, to Liza and her ladies!’

Just before that he played a song which was very critical of the City of London! Very political.

Gotta love the BBC. You can play Rebel songs and introduce them as such on a radio show but if you hear them in the background at a football match then you can expect two scottish guys to go mental………..

It’s a good show by the way. I would recommend a listen to any folkies out there.

Harding is now on the FF banned list. I suppose he’ll be bothered!

“The actions of 4 idiots is not representative of all Celtic supporters but it does get Celtic blamed and punished.”

Well it shouldn’t do and that is why I agree with the sentiment of the banner that was held up.

If UEFA are so offended by the sign, they should go after the people that held it up, charge them in a court of law and see how that goes down.

Must have been coincidental that his comments were reported elsewhere.

Hmmm, what would happen if someone took their radio to a football game, played that programme through a speaker or even sang along to the songs?

  5. We are coming to the time of the year were the press use all in thier powers to divide us,every half decent player will be looking to leave or linked with other clubs, made up stories about in fighting, dressing room revolt, expect the return of the death threats, its when we all must pull together in support of Celtic, not of certain groups or players, the club, warts and all..

UEFA don’t have to go anywhere near a court to punish a club. That’s just one reason why the banner was an act of stupidity.

    Don’t get smart.

Each report will have stated ‘Neil Lennon told the Scottish Sun’ or ‘Speaking to the Scottish Sun’ or words to that effect. That’s how it works.

Neil Lennon and Celtic chose the Scottish Sun to deliver the message. Make of that what you will.

  9. If Gary Hooper hadn’t scored the first goal yesterday, any chance we’d have got a penalty for the St Johnstone number 21’s attempt to put Victor W in a half-nelson as the corner comes in, or for the goalkeepers arm-lock on Hooper himself?

    Nah, didn’t think so.

STV confirms UEFA have open disciplinary action against Celtic on two counts – the banner and the flares.

I hope some people are very happy.

If Celtic get anything more than a fine – a ban on Supporters, closure of a stand or a points deduction then what will people say then?

The filthy Scottish media are rubbing their collective hands.

There is NO excuse for what those people did in Celtic’s name. Disgraceful

    Spot on m8.

I’ll be honest when i 1st seen it i thought its only a banner but the more i thought about it as paul said job done.

The media have been going on for months about 1 as bad as each other and i thought the GB would’ve learned from the poppy debate but they didn’t so the media won in this because it was their agenda to say one was as bad as each other for months and now with us being charged we have no comeback.

I will say in our defence when we wreck a city like them thats when i will start to worry.

I think the GB are immense and there are people out there who wan’t to crush them and see them no more but i for one think this will be the clubs biggest own goal if they get rid of them.

The GB must give the players that xtra lift when they need it most and if they cut out the stupid things then there is no one better than the GB.

Ernie Lynch If we take your point of view to be correct ( I dont ) there would be no way you could take any banner into a Celtic match as UEFA might find it offensive.Alternitivaley maybe we could let the media see all our banners before a game and correct any ones they think are offensive.I think we are making a mountain out of a mole hill.H.H.

  14. Lets get Fraser Forster signed up now. At last he is looking like the real deal .

The nerviousness seems to have gone and yesterday he was in total control and looked like a class keeper.

“We laughed at the antics of the owner of Sion taking on UEFA.

It’s not so funny now. ”

And it’s not over yet. We’ve now got a situation where it’s escalated from one team taking on UEFA to the Swiss FA taking on UEFA/FIFA.

I know who I’ll put my money on.

Currently doing their dictatorial thing with the Swiss FA over their failure to sanction Sion even though the Swiss Courts instructed the Swiss FA not to sanction Sion.

Currently threatening to expel Basel from the Champions League .

Currently not interesting in explaining why they allowed both of Sion’s games with Celtic to go ahead .

Currently not interested in explaining why the UEFA Rep at both Sion / Celtic games accepted / signed Sion’s team sheets.

Currently not interested in explaining why they were so keen to encourage Celtic to complain about Sion’s line ups..

    Arrogant , incompetent chancers .

  18. Lets get something clear – We all know UEFA. We know they do things which are unfair and which can punish clubs for the actions of one idiot.

When that clown ran on the park against Milan and touched Dida’s face – we got fined

When some clown threw a plastic bottle on to the park in the San Siro – we got fined.

2 idiots, Celtic suffered. Unfair? Yes. UEFA’s rules? Yes. We have no way to fight them as Sion are discovering and the Swiss FA are too their potential cost.

4 idiots in Udinesse are going to get us at best a fine and at worst a stand closed or a ban on supporters.

Whether you agree with UEFA or not we cannot beat them and Sion is evidence enough of that. Celtic’s name is being dragged down to the level of the animals because 4 morons don’t know how to behave themselves and don’t care what the club may suffer in future. If Celtic were to go into Europe next season and have no away fans what will you say then?

If the media get their chance for their never ending false equivalence obsession between them and us because of 4 idiots I will be disgusted.

You cannot fight UEFA, what they say goes so don’t try. It may be undemocratic, unfair etc etc but you cannot beat them and we have no clout so we certainly cannot – we don’t come from Spain, Germany, England or Italy – in other words we don’t count as much as they do. call it what you like Celtic should have gone to Italy a

  19. Anyone got any idea of how long the SFA will wait for Mr Whyte to send over key information?

Anyone got any idea when the investigation will be under way regarding rangers owing to a tax authority and being granted a UEFA licence?

Hard to see the relevance with Croppies Lie Down.

A few Celtic fans chose to protest against the UEFA fine – they had the entire English language at their disposal and that was the best they could do.

There was only ever going to be one outcome. It’s pointless making snide comments about our manager and where he decided to make his statement. Celtic are getting negative headlines and facing another UEFA punishment because of an act of stupidity from a few of our fans.
