St Mirren have marked a few cards

449

Don’t give me any semi-final chat for now, we have a league game ahead, the biggest threat to which is to take your eye of what’s in front of us. For the next six days, the season is one game long.

St Mirren did their homework before coming to Celtic Park yesterday. The Paisley club are five points adrift at the foot of the Championship but for almost an hour were as compact and competitive as any Premiership club against Celtic this season.

There was nothing particularly innovative about their strategy; two banks of four, which seldom had more than five yards between them, with a couple of runners trying to occupy Celtic’s back line, but it wasn’t until the introduction of Patrick Roberts, and, crucially, Leigh Griffiths, that Celtic’s shape was up to the task.

Moussa Dembele and Scott Sinclair were double-marked throughout as St Mirren sacrificed control down their left. We are at the stage of the season that there can be few surprises from any team, and certainly not from these two. The challenge for Celtic is to exploit other areas of the field.

While Brendan Rodgers was right to give credit to St Mirren for their performance, from what I gather there was a bit of an inquest behind closed doors. We lost a goal to a straightforward set-piece, could easily have been two down early in the second half, and created very little before the opening goal.

Much of the afternoon took on a familiar ‘Celtic treble upset’ look. You and I have been here before. Many times. We got away with it this time, partly because we were playing a team at home who have won only four of 25 Championship games this season, but mostly because we have so much in the tank this season we can raise our game.

St Mirren have marked a few cards; no game can be taken for granted.

Almore, I don’t know if I have mentioed this to you before, on Springfield Road. the other side of the Emirates, there is a community centre called the Legacy Hub.

It has a small cafe open on weekend match days and is frequented by some of our support.

You are right about us having a cafe at Celtic Park but for supporters arriving early and not wanting to go to the Forge or the town for something to eat, it could be a god alternative.

have you read Celtic Minded …. edited by Dr. Bradley?

… it was published about 10 years ago …. an excellent collection of essays on Celtic, religion, society and politics …. I dare say you likely wont agree with all of it, but you might enjoy it nonetheless ….

  12. I went to Scotland games from a teenager as I stayed up the road in Castlemilk. I must admit the booing of Celtic players got to me.

I’ve been back since, the last game Italy. It has quelled but I still feel unwelcome with some of the support due to my allegiance to Celtic and my religion…. Not just from hun supporters either.

    I won’t be back.

  13. Went to the Scotland Ireland match at CP a year or so back with some pals for just for the craic. Scotland won 1-0, Maloney. Most bizarre experience, the away end filled with green and white and tricolours. I was in the Scotland end seated just above my own seat. The abuse McGeady took that night was sickening. When Scotland scored some tartan army dude was trying to climb all over me. Never again!

Genuine question, why do you support Celtic?

None of us on here support Celtic simply because of football.

A club that is open to all yet which will always be associated with its Catholic Irish roots.

An institution created to help those most downtrodden by the worst excesses of capitalism.

And a club whose very existence has been throughout its history an iconoclastic giruy to the establishment.

Forgive if I’ve misread your meaning over the years but none of this seems like your bag fella?

So what is your motive, what do you get from supporting Celtic? Not having a go, just struggling to understand.

The point is that the word Scotch is nowadays considered derogatory. Well by some at least. Snowflakes waiting to take offence perhaps.

    It was not always thus.

The use of words changes over time.

This guy regarded the use of the word Scottish, instead of Scotch, as an affectation.

A word of advice for any lucky soul who has a wife, daughter or relative who, as an act of kindness, has decided to sort out their accommodation in Lisbon as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations.

    1. The Estadio Nacional is about half an hour out of Lisbon on the train so staying out that way is ok but the majority of people are staying in Lisbon “old town” – Old town for Old Tim? – near the centre of town.

    2. Note the Estadio Da Luz – The stadium of light — is the home of Benfica (officially Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica) and is not where the European Cup Final was held in 1967. One person contacted me today because had it been solely left to well-intentioned relatives he would have been going on a guided tour of the Benfica ground on the 25th of May. Nice though that may be that was not quite the intention.

The Esquire House was my local for many a year both as a student and later as a newly married man. The cocktail bar was quite nice and downstairs you could enjoy a decent pint and a natter – although it was forever full of tossers chasing drunk bridesmaids! lol

The current incarnation of the Esquire is, in my opinion, truly horrible!

It is busy, reasonably priced a la Weatherspoons, but just horrible.

If I ever get round to writing a Rotten Pub Guide it will definitely get a mention!!

The best time I had at the Esquire with pals of mine , was watching the England Netherlands game at the Euro 88 tournament . One of the best centre forwards I have ever saw , Marco Van Basten, scored a brillant hat trick for the Dutch. From there we got taxis over to Heraghty’s to watch the Ireland Russa game.

Genuine question, why do you support Celtic?

    ==========================================

    An accident of birth.

Just like my ” Catholicism ”

Brought up in the Faith and the ” faith.”

For many clubs and teams , perhaps most , it`s geographical.

That is understandable and not unhealthy.

Take it to its logical conclusion and thats why people support their ” patch ” and/ or their country.

Supporting a team because of ” religion ” is unhealthy and creates religious bigotry. Viz Rangers .

The difference , of course , is stark.

Rangers at Board level promoted , arguably continue to promote , Protestantism.

And are followed in that regard by their supporters.

The Celtic Board do not , as far as I am aware , promote Catholicism. And should not.

Do you think that Celtic supporters should return to singing ” Faith of our Fathers ” ?

If not , why not ?

How about ” God bless our Pope ” ?

    =====================================================================

” An institution created to help those most downtrodden by the worst excesses of capitalism.”

Are you quoting Bro. Walfrid there ?

  24. JAMESGANG on 6TH MARCH 2017 10:50 PM

Genuine question, why do you support Celtic?

*because my da did and he supported Celtic because his da did and he supported Celtic because he was Irish.

I often wonder if I had been born 100 years earlier would I have supported Vale of Leven, probably hating Renton tae and for sure Dumbarton.

    …into quotations, you did.

But you can hardly argue that the laizze faire attitude towards Gorta Mor and the hunger and poverty that blighted our Cities was anything less than a total disaster.

  26. I’m sure everyone’s aware we are facing the newest team in the SPFL on Sunday.

We dished out a fair few hammering a to their predecessors over the years.

To get me in the mood to get up early on Sunday, I will post some of the games I remember with great fondness.

Tonight’s highlight is from a freezing day on a frosty pitch which Big Jock had covered in straw to ensure the game went ahead in front of a full house.

No jokes about the Kelly Xounting Methodology please.

January 3rd 1966, just two days after we had also beaten Clyde at Shawfield

  27. Oops wrong game but just as enjoyable.

That was a Bobby Lennox hat trick in the Glasgow Cup on a beautiful Summer’s evening at Ibrox.

For some forgotten reason we were in the stand that night and when Bobby scored his third we had the place to ourselves.
