St Mirren have marked a few cards

449

Don’t give me any semi-final chat for now, we have a league game ahead, the biggest threat to which is to take your eye of what’s in front of us. For the next six days, the season is one game long.

St Mirren did their homework before coming to Celtic Park yesterday. The Paisley club are five points adrift at the foot of the Championship but for almost an hour were as compact and competitive as any Premiership club against Celtic this season.

There was nothing particularly innovative about their strategy; two banks of four, which seldom had more than five yards between them, with a couple of runners trying to occupy Celtic’s back line, but it wasn’t until the introduction of Patrick Roberts, and, crucially, Leigh Griffiths, that Celtic’s shape was up to the task.

Moussa Dembele and Scott Sinclair were double-marked throughout as St Mirren sacrificed control down their left. We are at the stage of the season that there can be few surprises from any team, and certainly not from these two. The challenge for Celtic is to exploit other areas of the field.

While Brendan Rodgers was right to give credit to St Mirren for their performance, from what I gather there was a bit of an inquest behind closed doors. We lost a goal to a straightforward set-piece, could easily have been two down early in the second half, and created very little before the opening goal.

Much of the afternoon took on a familiar ‘Celtic treble upset’ look. You and I have been here before. Many times. We got away with it this time, partly because we were playing a team at home who have won only four of 25 Championship games this season, but mostly because we have so much in the tank this season we can raise our game.

St Mirren have marked a few cards; no game can be taken for granted.

Gearoid, thanks . Our team doing the business this season and hopefully for many more, makes me happy.

I hope you and your family are well and you have been bouyed by the election results last week.

Have You heard how Joe Gormley is getting on? Is he still playing or taking a break from football?

Liam Boyce has improved, with and without the ball, no end for Ross County over the past season and a half.

It would be so good if he scored against Sevco at Ibrox this or next season.

Yer a wind up merchant. Dallas made a valid point and you found it fitting to besmirch his post.

When the Lisbon Lions stand opened I moved to sit beside my mates ( I was the only Catholic out of six) all went to a non denominational schools but supported Celtic…one of them was Gilmours brother.

It’s not so much the school you went to, it’s the way you are brought up… To be open armed and tolerant of others beliefs… Rather than marching through cities/towns beating a drum and playing flutes to opine your beliefs on others. HH

I am sorry if you took these remarks personally and I should have expressed the first better. The point I was emphasising is that there will always be some “segregation” in education be it private v state, faith v non denominational. And, it could be argued that for community harmony private schools could be abolished. Incidentally, I am not arguing that case.

If Dr. Morrow does not ascribe any blame to faith schools I reiterate that I find it strange that someone not au fait with the situation on the ground would argue otherwise. Of course, you are entitled to your opinion.

I think that we all agree that in a perfect world there would be no racism, no bigotry, no discrimination, no wars.

    Now back to Celtic. HH

  11. I have been watching the West Ham game, it’s garbage, for all the money spent both teams are garbage, Chelsea are a better class of garbage, how managers like Bilic gets a gig is beyond me, they spend £millions on second rate nobodys, but as the english leagues are full of second rate managers who buy second rate players so it’s just the norm.

Thankfully our club presently are not in that ball park.

Delaney’s, my other nephew and my niece went to St Ninian’s then St Tam’s. My older sister was very pleased with the education both received at each school.

It was turn the clock back time for them. Before St Pius was built in Drumchapel , Catholic secondary school children went to St Tam’s . When St Pius was shut about twenty years ago, Catholic children from Drumchapel went to St Tam’s.

Joe Gormley has resigned for Cliftonville. Can’t play this season for them though as a result of the 3 club rule. Give him extra recuperation time from the bad injury he received at Peterborough.

Welcome any goal against that new mob.

Loving the way we are playing this season. Gladdens the heart as well as the soul.

Election results unbelievable. Up 57k to 224k, 27 seats and Unionists lost 16 of the 18 seats that the Assembly reduced by. Their hatred and intolerance galvanised the Nationalist electorate. Anyway plenty more battles to be fought on that front.

    Sipsini, thanks .

My comment about the granchildren being Celtic fans was my poor attempt at adding a bit of humour to the situation , but as you say , it may well turn out to be true that the grand children of Ibrox fans could become Celtic fans as their pals at school are Celtic supporters.

Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream isnt a Catholic but most of his pals were Celtic supprorters when he was younger and that’s one of the reasons he started supporting us.

Why is it a gripebear the association between Catholic & Celtc? Most understand that Celtic was found to help the Catholic poor but opened the door for everyone. Why we don’t have a secular support as I highlighted with my mates in an earlier post.

Gearoid, Joe will probably get back to his free scoring ways next season and when he is fully fit.

I’m no expert on Cliftonville but I always want them to do well. Two of my pals were over for the game in1984 between Cliftonville and Celtic.

The association between Catholicism and Celtic is a fact.

Maybe for some , what used to be termed ” Saturday Catholicism” .

    :-)

128 years or so later , the association is an anachronism or it certainly should be.

Remember our history , but way past the time to move on.
