St Mirren have marked a few cards

449

Don’t give me any semi-final chat for now, we have a league game ahead, the biggest threat to which is to take your eye of what’s in front of us. For the next six days, the season is one game long.

St Mirren did their homework before coming to Celtic Park yesterday. The Paisley club are five points adrift at the foot of the Championship but for almost an hour were as compact and competitive as any Premiership club against Celtic this season.

There was nothing particularly innovative about their strategy; two banks of four, which seldom had more than five yards between them, with a couple of runners trying to occupy Celtic’s back line, but it wasn’t until the introduction of Patrick Roberts, and, crucially, Leigh Griffiths, that Celtic’s shape was up to the task.

Moussa Dembele and Scott Sinclair were double-marked throughout as St Mirren sacrificed control down their left. We are at the stage of the season that there can be few surprises from any team, and certainly not from these two. The challenge for Celtic is to exploit other areas of the field.

While Brendan Rodgers was right to give credit to St Mirren for their performance, from what I gather there was a bit of an inquest behind closed doors. We lost a goal to a straightforward set-piece, could easily have been two down early in the second half, and created very little before the opening goal.

Much of the afternoon took on a familiar ‘Celtic treble upset’ look. You and I have been here before. Many times. We got away with it this time, partly because we were playing a team at home who have won only four of 25 Championship games this season, but mostly because we have so much in the tank this season we can raise our game.

St Mirren have marked a few cards; no game can be taken for granted.

Tonight’s highlight is from a freezing day on a frosty pitch which Big Jock had covered in straw to ensure the game went ahead in front of a full house.

    Not much sympathy there either.

I`m afraid the question was rhetorical and sarcastic.

  3. I cannot blame the distraction of my 6 week old grand son wanting attention.

All is well when I can watch Celtic goals and play with my grand kids.

  4. Catholicism is at the root of our club.

No need to revisit the early years.

Growing up on the North Lanarkshire moor in the 50s, it was impossible to escape the connections with our faith and Celtic.

Pilloried and despised for attending mass and a Carholic school, Celtic represented a refuge and an outlet to express our identity.

Even today it would be anathema to deny our origins and the influence Catholicism exerted on Celtic and for some, vice versa.

My father wasn’t a big Celtic fan, but three of my uncles were as was a neighbour who took me to my first game on March 6 1954

My point is simply that there would not be a blogger on here who is not a capitalist.

    Property owning perhaps ?

With capital earning bank interest ?

    Share owning ?

Unquestionably supporting a blatantly capitalist organisation. To wit Glasgow Celtic.

    But still spouting outdated dogma.

  12. From BBC Scotland news, so it must (might) be true

Former Birmingham City manager Gary Rowett has confirmed that he held talks with Rangers as the Ibrox club search for a new team boss.

Al-Gharafa coach Pedro Caixinha is being tipped as Rangers’ first choice.

But Rowett told BBC Sport: “It is public that I met Rangers. Again, it is a compliment clubs like that are willing to meet me.

“It doesn’t mean to say they want me to be their manager. I just had a conversation with the club.”

Rowett, who was sacked by Birmingham in December, revealed that Rangers are not the only club with whom he has spoken.

“It is like anything, especially being an out of work manager, people say ‘would you like to meet?’,” said the 42-year-old, who started his managerial career with Burton Albion.

“It was important for me to go and meet them and share my vision and my philosophy.

“I have done that with a few clubs who are looking for their next manager.”

Rowett said he would not be fazed about the size of Rangers, who sit third in the Scottish Premiership after parting acrimoniously with his fellow Englishman, Mark Warburton, last month.

Good morning, CQN. Early start today.

I had read a couple of weeks ago, when I was away in US, that St. Mary’s Church, Calton, the birthplace of Celtic, had required funds after being vandalized and the CSC in the Garngad had raised funds to meet the shortfall in the compensation paid by the insurers.

Does the church still require funds to put in security measures? I think one of the contributors to the blog, sorry can’t reme who, is a parishioner and may be able to answer. HH

    Saturday 7th March

I received a most welcome note tonight from Bernie, my sister. old Bernie. I love her and think she’s the greatest.

I am now convinced that the authorities intend to implement strict isolation soon, as I am having trouble in seeing my solicitor. I hope I’m wrong about the isolation, but we’ll see.

It’s only that I’d like to remain with the boys for as long as possible for many reasons. If I’m isolated, I will simply conquer it.

A priest was in today, somewhat pleasant, and told me about Brendan O Cathaoir’s article in The Irish Times during the week, which I saw. We had a bit of discussion on certain points, which, of course, were to him contentious. He was cordial in his own practised way, purely tactical, of course, and at the same time he was most likely boiling over inside, thinking of the reference to this week’s AP/RN (February 28th issue) calling him a collaborating middle-class nationalist, or appropriate words to that effect.

He is too, says I, and I sympathise with those unfortunate sons of God who find themselves battling against the poverty, disease, corruption, death and inhumanities of the missions…

I am 61 kgs today, going down. I’m not troubled by hunger pangs, nor paranoiac about anything pertaining to food, but, by God, the food has improved here. I thought I noticed that during the last hunger-strike. Well, there is a lot at stake here.

I got the Irish News today, but there’s nothing in it, that’s why I got it.

I’m looking forward to seeing the comrades at Mass tomorrow, all the younger looking faces, minus the beards, moustaches, long rambling untamed hair matted in thick clumps.

One thing is sure, that awful stage, of the piercing or glazed eyes, the tell-tale sign of the rigours of torture, won’t be gone – if it is ever removed. I wonder is it even conceivable that it could be erased from the mind?

We got a new comrade during the week. Isn’t it inspiring the comrades who keep joining us? I read what Jennifer said in court. (On being sentenced, Jennifer McCann said: ‘I am a Republican prisoner of war and at the moment my comrade Bobby Sands is on hunger-strike to defend my rights as a political prisoner.’) I was touched and proud, she is my comrade.

I’ve been thinking of Mary Doyle and Ellen McGuigan and all the rest of the girls in Armagh. How can I forget them?

The Screws are staring at me perplexed. Many of them hope (if their eyes tell the truth) that I will die. If need be, I’ll oblige them, but my God they are fools. Oscar Wilde did not do justice to them for I believe they are lower than even he thought. And I may add there is only one thing lower than a Screw and that is a Governor. And in my experience the higher one goes up that disgusting ladder they call rank, or position, the lower one gets…

It’s raining. I’m not cold, my spirits are well, and I’m still getting some smokes — decadence, well sort of, but who’s perfect. Bad for your health. Mar dheas anois, Oíche Mhaith.

Genuine question, why do you support Celtic?

    ==========================================

    An accident of birth.

Just like my ” Catholicism ”

Brought up in the Faith and the ” faith.”

For many clubs and teams , perhaps most , it`s geographical.

That is understandable and not unhealthy.

Take it to its logical conclusion and thats why people support their ” patch ” and/ or their country.

Supporting a team because of ” religion ” is unhealthy and creates religious bigotry. Viz Rangers .

The difference , of course , is stark.

Rangers at Board level promoted , arguably continue to promote , Protestantism.

And are followed in that regard by their supporters.

The Celtic Board do not , as far as I am aware , promote Catholicism. And should not.

Do you think that Celtic supporters should return to singing ” Faith of our Fathers ” ?

If not , why not ?

How about ” God bless our Pope ” ?
