Stand up for the Champions

I know when you begin to dominate a championship that when another team eventually lift the trophy it can seem like an intolerable failure; compare our distress in 2009 to our resolve to do better after the final home game in 1996.  Time adds perspective to our triumphs.  As does not being there and seeing photos of the presentation hours after the event.

These are special times, enjoy them.

Many thanks to the Columba Club in Blantyre for Friday night’s Question and Answer event, and to the irrepressible Phil Agnew, who organised the event.  I was delighted to share a stage with Paul McConville and Phil Mac Giolla Bhain.  Great to see so many CQN’ers there too, my only regret is that I didn’t get a chance to catch up with everyone. With supporters like those in Blantyre on Friday night, we’re in good hands.

Remember to buy Heart of a Lion, Willie Wallace’s magnificent autobiography, available below.

Stein’s my manager, Mowbray’s centre half. With the greatest respect to both fine gentlemen, that’s their best positions I reckon lol

  8. Phyllis, What attracted my attention was you said something like ” Which of us wouldn’t have taken the soup to feed our starving children” and whilst normally I agree with those sentiments the reality is that the vast majority didn’t, so I just thought that was worth mentioning.. Like many phrases the dramatic meaning has been watered down and now its just a general term for a turncoat. E.G. Many people use the phrase as ” A Rule of Thumb” not realising that the origin of the phrase came from an actual Statute Law, that a man was not allowed to beat his wife with a stick thicker then his thumb. If the stick was equal or thinner then his thumb he was legally entitled to whack her to his heart’s content.

  11. Goldstar,

Funny old world indeed. Me and my mate (both in green stuff) had been to the game but our other mate, unbeknown to us, was kicking his heels in central Glasgow waiting for his train up to Fort William, as he was travelling up from Bristol. Knowing that the game was finished he took a chance, came over to Babbity’s, looked in the window and there we were. I was actually texting him when he started knocking the window. Another warm wee tale from a lovely day with fellow Tims. And I still don’t understand why I didn’t have a hangover!

  12. emeraldbee- Ha ha, good timing indeed from you mate.

That description would fit just about every other male in Babbity’s, and some of the women too!

Hope to see you again some time in there soon.

  16. Off topic, read a while ago, someone mentioned the Grange pub up the Gallowgate,i used to frequent it often in the 80s.remember being in the lounge before a huns game.it was perfect,a concrete shell with a dustbin in the middle as an ashtray,Iwould have been amazed if the door opened and a fag paper could have forced its way in.Anyways can anyone recall the boozer just up the road/was it the Camalache or am I halacutinating due to Stella? Been to some great Celtic Drinking holes all over the planet but have to say the Grange seems to remain freshest and madest in my beffudled memory.

For what it’s worth, I am in complete agreement with Corkcelt. If it were me, I would not take the soup. But I would steal the soup, or any other food I could lay hands on to feed my children.

My justification is that it would be by far the lesser of two evils and that the ethical principle of double effect would apply.
