Stand up for the Champions

I know when you begin to dominate a championship that when another team eventually lift the trophy it can seem like an intolerable failure; compare our distress in 2009 to our resolve to do better after the final home game in 1996.  Time adds perspective to our triumphs.  As does not being there and seeing photos of the presentation hours after the event.

These are special times, enjoy them.

Many thanks to the Columba Club in Blantyre for Friday night’s Question and Answer event, and to the irrepressible Phil Agnew, who organised the event.  I was delighted to share a stage with Paul McConville and Phil Mac Giolla Bhain.  Great to see so many CQN’ers there too, my only regret is that I didn’t get a chance to catch up with everyone. With supporters like those in Blantyre on Friday night, we’re in good hands.

Remember to buy Heart of a Lion, Willie Wallace’s magnificent autobiography, available below.

From Clive Lindsay BBC Scotland Sport…………..’Before kick-off, manager Neil Lennon had again failed to rule out a move to Everton to fill the vacancy created by his fellow Celtic old boy David Moyes’ summer switch to Manchester United.

But the fact Lennon’s team could swat aside the challenge of fourth-top Saints without reaching the heights of their own capabilities might not have done much for his chances of landing the Everton job should he want it’……………….

    Eh!!!!!!!!!!

I thought that was a wind up and couldn’t believe that even the BBC would stoop to such a petty, snide and personal attack on Lenny.

    Morning, Hoops.

We’re almost done with 2012/13, and as far as Celtic’s domestic tactics are concerned, it’s been all about 4-3-3.

This season, Lenny has tinkered with central midfield to the extent that he has tried 10 different permutations there (to say nothing of 4-3-1-2!). Saturday’s combination of Brown, Wanyama, and Ledley was the only one to be repeated, and is, in my opinion, the best.

Every time Celtic have played 4-3-3 (not 4-3-1-2) consistently in a game, they have won.

I had mentioned before the game that the fluid attacking 3 of Forrest, Hooper and Stokes had featured only once previously, and in a 3-4-3, versus Dundee Utd in the 6-2 game. It has lost none of its attacking verve, and, much as I love Sammi, I can’t see a way in for the big Greek – he is more suited to the long ball rather than the fast, dynamic flurry of passing we saw on Saturday.

Of course, the major caveat is Europe. Lenny has yet to risk this formation against wilier continental opposition, but he must be tempted. His defensive 4-5-1 can only take the team so far. The departure or re-signing of Hooper will go a long way to determining whether he will be able to stick with this attacking style of play.

  4. I’d have thought after the weekend Martinez is now a stick on for the Everton job.

Big Nan, agreed, and there’s more drivel from the same report …………….’Ledley took full advantage of anything missed by the officials to power a drive into the far corner of the net after Forrest had played it across the edge of the penalty box’………
