Stinging defeat leaves us pondering

241

No excuses, Celtic were poor and deserved nothing more than they got at Kilmarnock yesterday.  Too often a new central defensive partnership looked for a forward pass and were faced with statuesque targets.  Kilmarnock went man-to-man and were mostly able to keep the contest in the middle of the park until very late in the game.

Kyogo, as ever, was the exception, continually moving, dropping deep to offer an outlet despite invariably being fouled.  Daizen Maeda has sufficient energy to get up and down the field all day, but we saw little of this.  He and Liel Abada were often uninvolved onlookers, waiting for the ball to work through central midfield.  We are left pondering if this was the plan.

One promising interchange between Matt O’Riley and Odin Holm, almost set up Kyogo, offered a glimpse of what was meant to be, if it had been replicated a few more times, the result would have been different.  As we have discussed before, our midfield is young and nimble, sometimes heft and experience is required.

Yang (64 mins) and Sead Haksabanovic (75 mins) significantly picked up Celtic’s pace when they came on, credit to Kilmarnock, however, they had a lead to defend and were intent on doing so.

The goal was scored when Celtic were temporarily reduced to 10 men, Greg Taylor was off being treated for a cut, sustained when he was elbowed on the head.  The referee and VAR apparently missed the incident, a clear swing of the elbow.  Officials also missed a late trip on Sead Haksabanovic inside the box.  It was a penalty in any other coloured shirt, but it wasn’t something our general play deserved.

Early in his first tenure Brendan Rodgers suffered defeat to Lincoln Red Imps, a setup which cost him nothing.  This one will sting a tad longer and asks just as many questions.

With our backroom staff unchanged I’d be surprised if the training methods would change so quickly.

Ah woulda got there sooner but I pulled a hamstring on the way to the keyboard!

  6. it is a poor read on here today, but the made up stuff is just that.

brendan should say no more interviews, everybody reads too much into it.

as to heart not being in it, maybe he has just matured, or he is answering questions and thinking what this crap again with these morons.

  7. Seems to me there is a lot of ref pointing today, ref being their 12th man etc.

If he’d been our 12th man we still would have lost.

I know the ref thing in Scotland, we all do, but ffs, have a look at our performance, or lack of it.

    Very disturbing

    how ?

he would have sent off the guy for the elbow, disallowed their goal, and gave us a penalty.

  9. We are so used to winning this and other blogs are like…….it’s akin to a junkie desperate for his fix…….the incoherent ramblings of some are hunbelievable.

We lost a game of football FFS, had the game been refereed fairly I don’t believe we would have lost, goals change games, red cards change games, penalties change games, we should NOT have had a goal given against us, they should have been down to 10 men and we should def have had a pen, that said we were shite.

I just have this horrible feeling that we are back to just keeping slightly ahead of the hun, the OF is alive and well.

Reading back, a few posters concerned about Brendan’s “sole”.

What has his shoe style got to do with anything?

  11. Some hysterical reactions on here to the result yesterday. We were poor and we lost.

I do wish someone like Brendan would come out and say outright that the Kilmarnock pitch is the worst professional pitch in the UK and should not be allowed at the top level of the professional game. It provides clear advantage to the home side and it’s a horrible watch for spectators. Stop saying we can’t blame the pitch etc – we can and we should, as should every other team. I know we have won there in the past, but it’s irrelevant.

We should also call out the VAR mistakes and ask for an explanation for the on-side decision and the trip on Haska. The elbow on Taylor should also be looked at as it was ‘missed’ by the ref and VAR team. We didn’t deserve anything from the game but the rules need to be applied.

Now I see a rumoured injury for our new CB, and it’s Brendan’s fault. Jeez.

  16. I don’t think there was a red card in that game yesterday but the elbow on wee GT was worthy of a yellow in any other league. This would have meant that he would not have had to leave the field to get treatment so we would not have been down to 10 men when they scored.

If it was a penalty on Saturday then it was a stonewaller on Sunday

  17. If anyone watched the Kilmarnock game and needs a break this Saturday from BrendanBall, I am still on the lookout for two tickets together and happy to pay whatever is the going rate.

In the video clip doing the rounds you see the Killie player deliberately jerk his elbow back towards Taylors head . If VAR reviews that it’s a very bright shade of red .

Whether we deserved to win or not is irrelevant. The Huns and their refereeing brethren might think it’s funny but L bet Viaplay don’t! I wonder much revenue this jolly wheeze has cost them.

    Yip.

Maybe that’s part of the reason they’re clearing out of Scottish football.

Interesting posts earlier about who do we complain about refs to?

Answer, IMHO – no one. Officially.

But we make it part of the narrative that eventually groundswells to the point it CANNOT be ignored.

    Similar to penalty statistics.

More subjective so discipline required to focus on the blatant bias only.

Manager needs to chip in with quips too, particularly pre-match.

  24. DENIABHOY re: weather

My Loovul lover thinks it never rains in Scotland, she always gets lucky. 4 years ago up and down the east coast, not a drop. Same as Skye and Glasgow trip last year.

  25. I don’t know Brendan Rodgers and I cannot speak to his state of mind.

A lot of posters are claiming that their pet theories were proved right yesterday but nothing was proven by a one-off game. It’s the start of the season and inconsistencies in performance are going to be there. but all that’s happened is we have lost an early season league game. That is not an anomaly or something we haven’t seen before. A loss in every group of 11 games and dropped points every half dozen or so games, is a usual occurrence in a season. Here is a summary of the past decade.

    2013/14- 6 draws 1 loss *

    2014/15- 5 draws 4 defeats*

    2015/16- 8 draws- 4 defeats*

    2016/17- 4 draws 0 defeats

    2017/18- 10 draws , 4 defeats

    2018/19- 6 draws, 5 defeats

    2019/20- 2 draws 2 defeat

    * The first 3 seasons were played without a Rangers team in the league

    *2020/21- 11 draws, 5 defeats

*This was the only year we lost the league

    2021/22- 6 draws,3 defeats

    2022/23- 3 draws, 3 defeats

So, on average, during the last decade we draw just over 6 times a season and lose just over 3 times. We still won the league in 9 of those seasons and the dropped points were not always in Glasgow Derby games- that’s another myth.

Of course, at present , if you are negatively minded, you could assert that we’ve lost one in 3 games. If that pattern repeats, we will lose 10 or 11 games in this season, which is genuine league losing form.

But no statistician of note would extrapolate from a season of 3 games and assert, with any confidence, that they are seeing a pattern.

But football fans will do this confidently when statisticians would baulk.
