Stinging defeat leaves us pondering

241

No excuses, Celtic were poor and deserved nothing more than they got at Kilmarnock yesterday.  Too often a new central defensive partnership looked for a forward pass and were faced with statuesque targets.  Kilmarnock went man-to-man and were mostly able to keep the contest in the middle of the park until very late in the game.

Kyogo, as ever, was the exception, continually moving, dropping deep to offer an outlet despite invariably being fouled.  Daizen Maeda has sufficient energy to get up and down the field all day, but we saw little of this.  He and Liel Abada were often uninvolved onlookers, waiting for the ball to work through central midfield.  We are left pondering if this was the plan.

One promising interchange between Matt O’Riley and Odin Holm, almost set up Kyogo, offered a glimpse of what was meant to be, if it had been replicated a few more times, the result would have been different.  As we have discussed before, our midfield is young and nimble, sometimes heft and experience is required.

Yang (64 mins) and Sead Haksabanovic (75 mins) significantly picked up Celtic’s pace when they came on, credit to Kilmarnock, however, they had a lead to defend and were intent on doing so.

The goal was scored when Celtic were temporarily reduced to 10 men, Greg Taylor was off being treated for a cut, sustained when he was elbowed on the head.  The referee and VAR apparently missed the incident, a clear swing of the elbow.  Officials also missed a late trip on Sead Haksabanovic inside the box.  It was a penalty in any other coloured shirt, but it wasn’t something our general play deserved.

Early in his first tenure Brendan Rodgers suffered defeat to Lincoln Red Imps, a setup which cost him nothing.  This one will sting a tad longer and asks just as many questions.

That season was the one and only season I was at every game home and away, had more money than sense!

As for the Burnley ‘game’ least said the better, most of the fighting was done by the fans.

  2. Does anyone have any idea how much Viaplay have lost in potential revenue due to these referees?

  3. GLENDALYSTONSILS on 21ST AUGUST 2023 12:40 PM

    McPhail Bhoy .

We’ve all seen the video clips and still pictures of the incidents . The same pictures the officials see , which emphatically rules out incompetence .

Yes I was being kind, of course it’s cheating, nothing else can explain it particularly with VAR, there can be no more, ‘referee was unsited’ ‘don’t see it can’t give’ excuses of old, those day are gone with VAR but only in Scotland, predominantly against one team or others when playing another certain team are what you can see with slow motion video and stills ignored.

I have that same gut feeling, the interviews I’ve watched I sense his heart and sole isn’t at our club.

    🍀

  5. We still have decent quality at the club and when we add to it in the next week or so, we will get back to our winning ways.

Ps I had £100 on Celtic to win the treble at 10/1. 🙄 Shit happens

If we win the league this year, I’ll be a very happy bhoy. Forget Europe it’s naw happening, other than £.

    🍀

  6. When Brendan returned I was hopeful he would be backed because I thought he had a much stronger bargaining position than his first time here. We haven’t even spent anywhere near the money we got for Jota and Starfelt never mind the tens of millions we have sitting in the bank.

    Has Brendan been conned?

If Kyogo gets injured we are in real trouble.

Don’t hold your breath for marquee signings.

I think we have already given up on europe .We will probably wait to see what the league situation is in January and then panick if things are tight.

  7. Sometimes employers can offer you stuff that just doesn’t materialise….happens all the time …you get offered a new job and they promise the moon …but the reality is somewhat different…..I’m now resigned that we will not spend anything like what was rumoured and that was BEFORE jota and starfelt left….Holm and Yang look OK…players who should be gradually fitted in….the Middle of the park is so short of pace and physicality its frightening…when Mcatee was rumoured I was starting to get excited….but I don’t know why I do it to myself continually let down ….I can see the last day of the transfer window unfolding already….like a jilted lover I’ll be left wondering what might have been !!!

  8. KLV – Brendan was wooed back by DD and MN and they must have provided one hell of a case to do so. Maybe the reality of the situation is not the one portrayed. When he said the other day he will coach the players he is given it sounded like a meek surrender to a model that is not fully to his liking.

I would have hoped they had agreed on a middle ground, allowing him 2-3 top drawer signings while continuing to provide younger players to develop.

Why come back then? Why sign up when your hearts not in it? Not money.

I don’t blame Peter for everything as some do, but occums razor is pointing right at Peter being in the building as a very high possibility that Brendan doesn’t look happy.

    But who knows.csc

  10. The ref is an absolute cheat and those in the VAR studio should be took to task. If we keep allowing them free reign it’s going to continue.

  11. Deniabhoy, we’ll see bud.

Last term he was excellent to listen to, really interesting man, this time it’s zero emotion and no enthusiasm. Huge change in his demeanour.

If its like you guys say, he’s promised a b and c and it’s not materialised. Why doesn’t he walk then? He was looking at a break anyway or Saudi clubs will take him? Just doesn’t make sense.

  12. Sutton1888,

Who do we complain to? They are all huns.

Dallas and aiken are the var fixed placemen now to make sure we get more calls like yesterday when we complain to their boss crowford he doesn’t even reply.

No modern game up here I’m afraid.

Heart and sole left when he did the first time.

  14. Bhoy From The Boyne on

I have been thinking the same too theses past few weeks re: Rodgers. Why did he come back & is he already frustrated?

    Motivation not there?

    Only time will tell.

  15. glendalystonsils on

Brendan Rodgers is quite an astute guy ,so I find it hard to believe he would walk back into the same situation which led him to leave the first time . Unless he has been misled by the board’s vision for the club.

Or maybe I’m just getting edgy over what is a temporary blip in performance and signing progress.

  16. While we’re all anticipating marquee signings, mibby the truth is that Brendan was that signing.

But when he said I work with what the club gives me, he did sound – what – resigned.

I still suspect that we’ve simply got out of the habit of losing. Too entitled.

Good time to remember we’re still top of the League.

    KTF

  17. Guys,

I must agree with many of you.

Brendan has been very un Brendanlike since his return.

He has the gift of the gab and is usually high profile. He has the ability to have interviewers/ interviewees eating out of his hand.

We have not witnessed that to date. This is not Hindsight after a 1 off defeat, some of us have stated this since his return.

BR is ambitious Kilmarnock and Livingston may not float his boat, but the CL most certainly will.

On Saturday there will be a full house. I hope we win playing the Glasgow Celtic way in which Ange embraced. However, if we don’t win we will still be there for the next home game.

As the song goes:- win, lose or draw.

    Because its what we do.

    HH, the journey continues.

  18. Spot on about the wingers

In every game we play in the spl we’ll be outnumbered in midfield as long as we play with 3 out and out forwards and dont play with inverted full backs.

It’s a bit of a tough gig playing on that Celtic midfield, calmac man marked the whole time, no time to take a breather, you either have to be constantly looking for the ball or working hard to get back when we don’t have it

If your options for a pass are cut down by the opposition looking to fill the spaces the two wingers must make themselves available and must offer an out ball that doesn’t come straight back.

And they have to offer a genuine threat, not be reliant on others to do it for them

Yang looks like the sort of player Brendan used to great effect first time round. We could really do with a couple of guys with swagger

A bit worrying to be facing problems that we struggled with towards the end of his last time with us so early on. But he’s a very smart manager and it’s amazing how much better players look once they’re settled in a new system

  19. I have no insight whatsoever in to Brendan Rodgers mindset and I cannot then determine what he is thinking, unless he tells us and I cannot know for sure what he demeanour is when he is being interviewed after a match, again unless he tells us. But then no one else does either. Regardless of what you might read on here

  20. Yup

We have 2 Scottish poty players inc top goal scorer

    Japanese poty

    Norwegian poty

Recent World Cup strong performers from USA, Canada, Japan

    South Korean international striker.

Top creative midfield player from Japan Hatate

Top young Danish midfielder O Riley

    Former England goalkeeper

Polish and Swedish NT capped centre backs.

The guts of a squad which won a domestic treble last year plus the January and summer add one so far.

    Brendan is not happy apparently.

As a coach he can surely begin to mould that lot ….. and add to where necessary, or is it that he realises he can’t replicate the kind of play we had under ange ?

  21. Kevin at 1:48pm,

Who knows the answer to that, maybe “DeniaBhoy on 21st August 2023 1:43 pm” has it right.

One things for sure, there was a lack of desire to win, lack of team spirit and our winning tactics from last season has been dismantled. 🍀

  22. glendalystonsils on

    Burnley78

Brendan might not wish to replicate Ange’s style of football and perhaps that is part of the problem . That’s not to say we can’t have entertaining , attacking play , and hopefully we will given time and a few additions.

  23. Viaplay should take Alan Muir and the VAR refs to court and sue them for lost earnings – now that would be funny! … and it would stop dead any further corruotion.

I thought yesterdays repeated lines of needing quality players to the broadcasters was strange.

It’s obvious we need quality in but why the need for BR to keep saying it to the MSM if you and the recruitment team are aligned and working hard to get them in.

It sounded to me that BR was casting frustration.

A marked difference to how Ange dealt with these questions in his 2 years.

Remember when our host was questioning whether BR was a team player? 🤔

  26. Prestonpans bhoys on

Miss Prestonpans can’t make the Dundee game 16th September if you are free?

  27. Not commented on here for a while, but I think Rodgers will deliver, however we wont push on until after the next transfer window.

This window I expect us to get more experienced players in but very late on and I may be in a minority but I think we will get KT on loan.

However, I do have some transfer concerns.

First, we had a poor window last Xmas losing GG, Josip and Jenz. We are now paying for that . These guys have had 7/8 months to settle and only AJ is an adequate replacement. Oh possibly needs time, but Kobayashi isn’t up to it, and Iwata is a squad player.

Second, most of Ange’s transfer success came in first two windows when a lot of the players he knew very well, or dare I say it the previous team had scouted. Reality is that since we restructured our recruitment team and started to get players that Ange had less insight on, or were scouted by the new process, our success rate of new signings has declined.

Over past 10 years our best transfers are often the ones where the manager has an insight on the person, not just the stats.

I am sure there are a few players in England that BR has an insight on and could be the next Scott Sinclair, but without ripping up the strategy, BR needs the latitude to go and sign them.

  28. bournesouprecipe on

    Here’s what he said,

“ So we definitely need that quality in but we will work very hard to get the players in that can improve us and make us better and that is something we will do over the period of time now between now and the close of the window.”

The Cynic lads had 2 boys on from the square ball Leeds fans podcast over the summer for their take on BR’s Leicester years.

Apparently they had horrendous injury problems, particularly in their last season.

4/5 CB’s out now if Nawrocki rumours are true + Hatate & Ho out.

Leeds boys did warn us jokingly.

  30. Got to be the training/conditioning methods, same happened in Rodgers 1st spell hamstring injuries everywhere.
