Stinging defeat leaves us pondering

241

No excuses, Celtic were poor and deserved nothing more than they got at Kilmarnock yesterday.  Too often a new central defensive partnership looked for a forward pass and were faced with statuesque targets.  Kilmarnock went man-to-man and were mostly able to keep the contest in the middle of the park until very late in the game.

Kyogo, as ever, was the exception, continually moving, dropping deep to offer an outlet despite invariably being fouled.  Daizen Maeda has sufficient energy to get up and down the field all day, but we saw little of this.  He and Liel Abada were often uninvolved onlookers, waiting for the ball to work through central midfield.  We are left pondering if this was the plan.

One promising interchange between Matt O’Riley and Odin Holm, almost set up Kyogo, offered a glimpse of what was meant to be, if it had been replicated a few more times, the result would have been different.  As we have discussed before, our midfield is young and nimble, sometimes heft and experience is required.

Yang (64 mins) and Sead Haksabanovic (75 mins) significantly picked up Celtic’s pace when they came on, credit to Kilmarnock, however, they had a lead to defend and were intent on doing so.

The goal was scored when Celtic were temporarily reduced to 10 men, Greg Taylor was off being treated for a cut, sustained when he was elbowed on the head.  The referee and VAR apparently missed the incident, a clear swing of the elbow.  Officials also missed a late trip on Sead Haksabanovic inside the box.  It was a penalty in any other coloured shirt, but it wasn’t something our general play deserved.

Early in his first tenure Brendan Rodgers suffered defeat to Lincoln Red Imps, a setup which cost him nothing.  This one will sting a tad longer and asks just as many questions.

  1. CorkCelt,

I stayed clear of rolling out our years of underperformance in Europe in black and white, and ffs don’t churn out at me the huns as a benchmark for running a club.

Running a team to operate at a decent European level, trading upwards in players AND dominating domestically aren’t mutually exclusive. In fact, they should guranteee you get your OF firm fix each season with the players at our disposal.

Our ability to pay for both untapped talent and 6m- 9m type players each year as our model is where I thought we’d go this summer. Hopefully we put tht right in the next 10 days. Not entitlement. Just a bit of ambition and managed risk.

Europa league final in Dublin. Why not. (tries desparately not to bring the huns and Seville into it !!)

  2. We could resign Jota for free and sell him to sumbdy else for another £25 million!

    Orgasms in boardroom!

(If there are any balls in there)

  3. For me it’s up to Brendan to call out on field decisions by the ref / var – not the board. Other managers do.

Brendan’s the face of Celtic with the media – they don’t have news conferences with the CEO.

  4. If I was in the media I’d be asking McInnes if he thinks things were evened out, wink wink, nod, nod.

The media will say diddly squat – it’s up to us to raise the issue – it’s also the way our support know that the club aren’t happy.

Anything that happens behind the scenes stays there.

Knowing nothing about football,AND being a” Secret Hun”.(Well not so secret,Lambert 14,spilt the beans),I was thinking, could the fact we are missing,3 of our back 4,from last season, the survivor,Taylor having to adapt to a different style, our brilliant Hatate,Aaron Mooy.,from midfield, and the possibly irreplaceable Jota gone ,have any bearing ?.Thats 6 of our top performers missing at the one time for various reasons.

I would think that would throw any team off kilter a tad.

No ?OK,then just sack PL Junior, that should Sort it all out.Its the only logical solution.

    ————————-

Surely even you can see that its the lack of quality replacements for the players who have left that is the problem.

    TET,

All the signings you mention earlier, that Ange brought in,were all projects at the time. Not one of them had the decent pedigree that our signings this window have. The 2 Korean boys,no different to our Japanese boys.Unknown to any of us.

    ——————-

Oh right, you are including the Korean from the B league who looked like he had won a competition to play a match v Bilbao?

Try posting that nonsense on other sites and you will be mocked.

Do you deliberately talk mince or are you trolling?
