Stinging defeat leaves us pondering

241

No excuses, Celtic were poor and deserved nothing more than they got at Kilmarnock yesterday.  Too often a new central defensive partnership looked for a forward pass and were faced with statuesque targets.  Kilmarnock went man-to-man and were mostly able to keep the contest in the middle of the park until very late in the game.

Kyogo, as ever, was the exception, continually moving, dropping deep to offer an outlet despite invariably being fouled.  Daizen Maeda has sufficient energy to get up and down the field all day, but we saw little of this.  He and Liel Abada were often uninvolved onlookers, waiting for the ball to work through central midfield.  We are left pondering if this was the plan.

One promising interchange between Matt O’Riley and Odin Holm, almost set up Kyogo, offered a glimpse of what was meant to be, if it had been replicated a few more times, the result would have been different.  As we have discussed before, our midfield is young and nimble, sometimes heft and experience is required.

Yang (64 mins) and Sead Haksabanovic (75 mins) significantly picked up Celtic’s pace when they came on, credit to Kilmarnock, however, they had a lead to defend and were intent on doing so.

The goal was scored when Celtic were temporarily reduced to 10 men, Greg Taylor was off being treated for a cut, sustained when he was elbowed on the head.  The referee and VAR apparently missed the incident, a clear swing of the elbow.  Officials also missed a late trip on Sead Haksabanovic inside the box.  It was a penalty in any other coloured shirt, but it wasn’t something our general play deserved.

Early in his first tenure Brendan Rodgers suffered defeat to Lincoln Red Imps, a setup which cost him nothing.  This one will sting a tad longer and asks just as many questions.

Try following on twitter celtic spares. My bhoy uses it he says keep notifications on and be quick. You make arrangements to meet them and pay in cash. Some are met at the stadium and others make different arrangements. Good luck.

  4. St. Stiv’s.

It’s merely an indicator of form. Cup ties occur at various times throughout a league campaign and this one took place in the opening set of 3 games. Nothing more and nothing less.

Cup form and League form may be separate entities but August form is August form and is not the same as January form.

  5. in a pervers way, celtic losing has just ramped the pressure up for beale.

FF and RM are full of “the league cup is a gimme, he cant not win it now, in another way i am more worried about ross county than psv (honestly that is not made up)

    fair good answer.

i do worry though that these supporters filling the blogs, the hotline, the phone ins, when did we become so scared of every defeat,

i read somewhere that celtic have the most league wins in all leagues in europe for the last 10 years.

and in the last 7 seasons, only 5 cup defeats,

    what more do people want.

  7. as an aside, charlie mulgrew is very good on clyde tonight.

It’s VAR Jim but not as we know it

Anybody other than yesterday’s VAR able or asked to explain how this is onside?

    ____

When they showed the replay on TV, I was sure it wouldn’t be a goal. Isn’t the upper arm considered as OK to score with and hence if it was ahead of our player, then it’s offside. Why are there two lines? They aren’t even parallel. It’s not a subjective decision.

  9. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

I might regret introducing an Ivan Toney post on here ….

… given I’ve debated copiously on here about getting over him not playing for Celtic.

Anyway, I fully accept he broke rules and deserved a ban.

But, IMHO, a lengthy ban from playing should have sufficed.

Does anyone else think banning the guy from training feels cruel?

When you say your old season ticket seat is not being used, maybe another supporter has it as his/her season ticket but for whatever reason — holiday, work, illness etc — didn’t use it for the one home game so far this season.

It’s getting better though they are keeping up, last year (Jota’s goal) the camera was in the wrong half.

Here is the evidence M’lord it’s offside, but f**k it , we’re calling it onside.

  12. Glad to see Ange has got off to a flier down at Tottenham Hotspur but sorry on the otherhand to say the we thought this was to be his season for the big push into Champions lge. territory. Alas, with the departures of seriously crucial players of a terrificly successful last term, including the gaffer and now worrying injuries particularly in defence and midield. Going out of the League Cup may not be such a problem long term particularly with Europe on the horizon. Hopefully we will be there after Christmas.

Didn’t see the match yesterday but by all accounts Celtic were poor but were victims of some debateable decisions by the officials. Will watch the Rangers game tomorrow night to see what we are up against this season.

They seem to have the knack of being successful against tier two and three teams in Europe judging by their qualification for the group stage C.L. last season the difficult route and the Euro final previous season. Against teams we seem to have problems with.

Could this be because they retain their seasoned defenders like Jarosic, Tavernier, Godson etc long term or journeymen as regularly referred to on CQN. or maybe it’s a little more than luck.

    ———–

it is a fair observation, and would be the obvious answer,

however some things are starting to bug me some.

I was only 3 rows from the front at 122, at the side tunnel where the polis and services congregate, and where ctv does its interviews, i sat end of row, wee section of only 5 seats, my neighbours one family and i got really friendly with them. it is a granda, a granny with mobility problems, a brother and alternating grand weans. great people, i was glad to meet them, and very supportive of the team, so i like that type of supporter.

now and again, when any of them couldnt make it the ticket went to a grown up son, on his uppers, not earning a lot, and happy to be taken whenever opportunity allowed, the granny attended less and less due to ill health.

when i missed a season due to ill health, my ticket went to the son, no charge, just use it.

after unwellness, covid lockdown, but we kept in contact all way through.

i met them often at hampden as well, real supporters, any ticket ever always appreciated.

the granda told me, if your ever giving up the seat tell us, kieran is long-term on the waiting list, but we want a seat around here.

so i did, told him the day the renewals finished, so they know the seat number obviously,

then the waiting list lucky calls, kieran got the email, on the day it opened up. he tried for the seat, not available. so he took another close bye. he also said the lions stand 2 corenr section were not available as blocked out as a whole block, i assume to allow the public sale.

so we are assuming my seat, someone else had got it.

as an aside across the row right at the tunnel fence, there are two seats that have never been sat on in all my time doon in that corner, never, not for a huns game or a european game or any other time. never.

so when i talked to tam after flag day he said, guess what no one turned up in your seat, want to try see if you can buy it and we take it over,

email to the club, sorry sb sales are closed completely, renewals done and waiting list took up, so nothing left.

lets see if the seat gets occupied anytime.

now here is what it am thinking,

the ticket office doesnt work hard to sell out, they work to deadlines, for renewals there is no tiem added, for relocations no time added, for waiting list no time added,

so they get a maximum number in the time allowed, match day public sales directed online, but i personally dont beieve they offer up every seat.

i think we are short of 800-1000 seats every home game – 1 in 60 empty.

after covid they want as much done on line as possible,

actually working for the customer, that is not really the objective, just making it easy.

when there was no huns at parkheid why didnt the crowd match the capacity, there was no segregation, but there were time locked out.

No it isn’t. United Kingdom is the official name of the sovereign state comprised of Great Britain & Northern Ireland. It is the state name on the passport.

Great Britain — Scotland, England & Wales — is a geographical term. Britain & British has through time become synonymous with the UK, but does not include Northern Ireland so is technically not the same as the UK.

  21. We brought in Koyogo, CCV, Hatate, AJ, Jota, so what’s the hold up with bringing in similar level players ?

Genuine question, something is just no right and I ain’t no body language expert afore the usual twats have their pathetic digs, if they can’t see there is a problem, then they are the problem, IMO of course.

  22. Tom….my point was …only Andrew Cotter says it …nobody else does ….don’t think its on the vests …might be ?
