Strict liability when playing to gallery

2207

Being responsible is not always easy, especially when it comes to running a football club, where playing to the gallery offers vastly better short-term returns, and no doubt a rush of endorphins.

If your fans are engaged in an activity which regularly brings them to the attention of the courts, and your club into disrepute, it doesn’t matter what you think of the apparent offense.  You may chant an offending song in the shower every morning month, but your only public comment on the matter can be to chastise and urge fans to desist.

Clubs in Scotland voted against what is known as strict liability.  This means they are not held responsible for transgressions by their fans – and who wants to be held responsible for the actions of others who protected from personal liability by hiding in a crowd.

Part of the deal on not having strict liability is that clubs must demonstrate that they take all steps necessary to dissuade and educate their fans from carrying out criminal or regulatory offenses.  It’s simply not possible for club to tell fans their illegal actions were justified, as this would place the club itself in the firing line.

The nonsense following the Scottish Cup final is all background noise as far as we are concerned, but be aware the contagion will spread beyond those you could consider highly dysfunctional operators.

Solving Kids Cancer in memory of Oscar Knox

Our own Bundoran Bhoy will run the Edinburgh Marathon on Sunday on behalf of Solving Kids Cancer.  He has put in an enormous amount of work ahead of the event, for a cause which you are only too familiar with.

26 miles is a long way to run.  You can give him some encouragement on his Just Giving page.

Good luck, Tommy.

  1. Could this be a replacem not for Rogic & Scott Allan ?

Brendan Rodgers barely has his feet under the table at Celtic and fans are already betting on Joe Allen being his first summer signing.

The Liverpool midfielder is known to be a favourite of Rodgers, with the pair having worked together at Swansea as well as Anfield.

Allen has been something of a bit-part player for the Reds under current boss Jurgen Klopp, and admitted earlier this week that he is unsure about his future on Merseyside.

A lot of people seem to be putting two and two together, and coming up with Allen in a Celtic shirt this summer, with a sizeable amount of supporters requesting odds on the move happening from bookies online

Charlie Mulgrew sauntered off the pitch during the Ajax game.

Afterwards he claimed that he was carrying an injury.

There’s no way of disproving if this was the reason for his departure from the field of play, so I suppose we are just going to have to take his word for it.

In saying that, I have seen many a Celtic player suffer injury during a game, but I’ve never witnessed a player exit the pitch in the manner that he did.

See there are tough decisions ahead – Do you reincorparate players such as Mulgrew, (a fair weather footballer in my opinion) in order to progress?

Or do you look to players like Ryan Christie to move the club forward?

    Re players fitness and injuries,

I thought that playing Scott Brown when obviously not fit was a huge risk, potentially to him and us (midfield v Sevco). I thought one of Charlie’s alleged concerns was that players were being brought back too soon?

Sometimes when things aren’t right in the camp (any team) it’s amazing the number of injuries that are suddenly reported.

    Off to walk the dog.

Charlie did not just walk off the park in that game.

I watched as he walked back to half way line, gave instructions to Scott Allan, and I believe informed the bench on way back he needed to come off.

May have appeared he just walked off as team re- assembled after losing the goal

Scott Brown for whatever reason has not been a 100% this season but he has been needed, in KT first Euro game (maybe Fenerbache) at home, I could be wrong it won’t be the first (or the last) Broony made a point of getting the ball to KT and giving the wee man a few early touches, in other games Efe has done the same…….I am a massive Broony fan…. He gets us in the very best of ways

That is a reasonable enough explanation.

It’s entirely up to the management to decide if he gets a new contract, or not.

In domestic football, these players shouldn’t have a problem competing – the likes of Mulgrew, Commons, Forrest and Broony. It’s the European arena where they struggle to cope.

Also a lot of them are prone to being injured most of the time anyway.

He does not take it for granted that he is certain to get a game ,never mind be captain, next season.

He wants to impress our new manager.

This was his intention before he knew that Brendan had been appointed.

Hopefully Charlie got a refund when he went off injured at HT against Aberdeen in May :O)

  19. Charlie Mulgrew is not the first Celtic player to seek out their own physio. Had a physio for a wee thing myself, nothing serious, all is well now. He had the national jersey of a Celltic player framed on his wall as thanks for his help. Physio told me that pro football clubs are notoriously lax with a players long term wellbeing and many will personally outsource their own physio this way. Most football clubs have a physio for an immediate there and then match day fix, he told me. This is the case in the English Premiership too he said. He singled out Sam Allerdyce as an unexpected exception to the rule at West Ham at the time. The West Ham board forced Roy Carol to play against Allerdyce will he said.

Still not enamoured to remember Mulgrew walking off that night. Glad to see he is hopefully staying with something to reprove though.

    TT/BGFC – That’s fair enough.

All of the players mentioned have helped the club win trophies over these past few years, and I appreciate their efforts.

Some of them have also been outstanding in European games, particularly during Neil Lennon’s time at the helm.

The past is the past though, and there is no room for sentiment.

If you believe that the said players can help the club progress in European football, that’s good.

It’s just an opinion, but I think that their best days have been and gone.

I hope that you are correct ,but forgive me for lacking faith.

Last week you told us that the Scottish media were going to set about Warburton if they lost the Scottish cup final.

He has not be seen or heard from ,and there has been virtually no comment about his whereabouts ,never mind a hint of any criticism towards him.

I hope I’m wrong ,but I suspect that Celtic will make an impotent statement ( contrived to try and get some dissenting fans back on board),the adverts will appear in the press.

The Rangers PR machine knows what is coming and will be ready.

It will all blow over in about a fortnight ,and nothing will be gained.

None of my comments are in anyway a criticism of the determined work that you and your fellow resolution 12r’s have done.

You all have my admiration and thanks for actually trying to do something.

I just don’t have any faith in the SFA or UEFA to deal with the matter fairly and honestly.

The Huddle is that the league winning game :-) where he played 45mins on his return from injury, to help out our depleted squad

The season before last I only made four home games due to Sunday working, so I didn’t renew last season.

I don’t know what the future holds in the work just now Sunday wise and as my brother is in London some weekends, he suggested splitting a book.

Seems the way for me to go at the moment and will just purchase tickets when my brother is using the book.

    Makes sense to me.HH

You say about Mulgrew not happy about the rehab advice.

This is no big deal and happens all the time.

Players regularly will have their own physios, will have connections with physios from other clubs, will even attend other clubs for treatment.

It can be as little as liking a certain physios way or even being friendly with them, this would obviously be a reason with someone new and not having English as a first language.

If you are getting massages constantly as most top pros are it is important you are comfortable in their company.

I would say if Mulgrew was the only one then they must be doing a good job.
