Stuck in a league without competition also has benefits

519

When the Champions League draw was made, I feared we would face Anderlecht at home on the final game after five defeats.  This would not necessarily have been the end of our interest in European football, but it would have damaged the momentum in the club in recent months.

You will remember, ahead of match day five, we discussed that the Anderlecht-Bayern Munich game was probably more important to our season than the PSG-Celtic game.  As it transpired, Bayern’s second half winner made all the difference to the second half of our season.

News last night that Celtic are the only group stage qualifier from the Champions Pot to still be in European competition offer some comfort; outcomes could have been a lot worse.

While European football is the custard in our doughnut, all I hear from is Celtic fans who are grateful it is over for a couple of months.  We have an unbeaten record to further and two games a week until the January break.

It can be pretty horrible, a huge club stuck in a minor league without competition, but it offers us respite, an opportunity to recharge, experiment and return afresh.

In years gone by whenever the best looking girl at a party or disco would knock back my advances, I would simply tell my mates ….,..” Doesn’t matter….she had Big Ears anyway” !

Huns yet again showing NO CLASS or DIGNITY whatsoever with that disgraceful and childish statement.

IF it later comes put that Tony Dochertys religion WAS in fact the ” stumbling block” in relation to McInnes accepting the job…that statement SHOULD come back to haunt the huns even more ?

  6. Re Homelessness.

In 2009 after having my full time job taken from me ( unfairly dismissed as ruled by a Judge in 2010)….I was also to lose my marriage and my beautiful home in Glasgow.

My wife left me in 2010….and the mortgage lender ” Northern Rock” chased me thru Glasgow Sheriff Court on 5 hearings to try and take my home from me…..this went on for two years til 2012.

FOUR different Sheriffs told Northern Rock to ” beat it” in that two year period due to my attempts to pay morygae arrears .

I was fighting a losing battle as my health became worse and no way could I get another job, so I eventually had to tell the 5th Sheriff that I was no longer contesting the repossession of my home, as I had got very lucky by getting a flat thru my current housing association in 2012.

However, before I secured that flat, I had to register as homeless ……it was the scariest time of my long life…until I got lucky.

The above situation that I found myself in had NOTHING to do with drink/drugs…..but an unfair dismissal” by a Labour controlled Council, that cost me everything that I once held dear.

The thing for me with this Hun (Jabba) statement is that it once again highlights their worst trait (among many) in my eyes.

    Arrogance…sheer Arrogance.

Any other UK club would block such propaganda for fear of msm ridicule.

Not Sevco though. They stiĺl see Scotland as being under their spell and can do, say and act as they please with impunity.

I’ll be interested in hearing if anybody apart from Michael Stewart tonight or maybe English, tears the script to shreds which it deserves. In a way I actuslly hope not because the Hun Hubris will eventually kill the spawned club as it did Mark 1.

  17. Having had a couple of very busy days I read the latest CQN article with a mixture of horror and amusement.

I think Paul’s increasingly arrogant posts remind me of another club who were once “king of the hill” before plummeting to their death in the normal mixture of heady arrogance and greed. Whilst it may be true we have little in the way of competition at the moment it wont ever be the case.

Whenever I read Paul’s articles I think we hear what the board are thinking. The board are thinking, ah, we met our goal to be in European competition post Christmas. Probably more thinking – ah more money to put in the bank.

What this shows is a continued dearth of ambition at Celtic. “we cant compete” they wail, whilst at the same time lording it over others who feel they cant compete. This is nothing but a classic case of cognitive dissonance which Paul used to love to talk about without any sense or irony.

Things are good at Celtic its true. Opposition clubs are genuinely scared of playing us. We are wallowing in cash. There is strategic investment going on in the sense of the hotel and museum construction.

But there is still a major problem. That is the purpose of Celtic. Are we an ambitious football club striving to improve and compete, despite (and sometimes because) of the odds against us? Or are we simply a latent investment for an already very rich businessman, who is just waiting for football restructuring before cashing in on one of the most historic and loved football clubs in the world?

Sadly, even in the Brendan Rodgers era, all the signs point to the latter. I read a news report yesterday that celtic wont “splash the cash” in the upcoming transfer window. This news management is redolent at celtic. They will allow wanton cheating but woe betide anyone who will expect us to take some steps to try and be more competitive at a higher level.

I am delighted celtic got to the Europa – but none of us can say we have seen any improvement at champions league level. We are a relatively rich football club and we are punching way below our weight. But the only thing true about Paul’s arrogant article is that the Scottish league affords us a position to look highly successful whilst at the same time having no ambition.

The most immediate danger in all of this is Brendan Rodgers. Managing celtic is a big job. But reputation with truly great managers is everything. If celtic continue down this road of mysterious saving and not trying to improve – why would a truly great manager hang around to see the inevitable demise?

As for Paul and cqn in general. The level of actual debate and discussion on this site is almost down to zero. The usual suspects cry loudly at anyone who dares question anything are shouted down. Any debate is quashed in the usual hail of abuse. And Paul is increasingly out of touch and arrogant (I guess just like his friends on the board).

Time will tell where it will lead.
