Stuck in a league without competition also has benefits

519

When the Champions League draw was made, I feared we would face Anderlecht at home on the final game after five defeats.  This would not necessarily have been the end of our interest in European football, but it would have damaged the momentum in the club in recent months.

You will remember, ahead of match day five, we discussed that the Anderlecht-Bayern Munich game was probably more important to our season than the PSG-Celtic game.  As it transpired, Bayern’s second half winner made all the difference to the second half of our season.

News last night that Celtic are the only group stage qualifier from the Champions Pot to still be in European competition offer some comfort; outcomes could have been a lot worse.

While European football is the custard in our doughnut, all I hear from is Celtic fans who are grateful it is over for a couple of months.  We have an unbeaten record to further and two games a week until the January break.

It can be pretty horrible, a huge club stuck in a minor league without competition, but it offers us respite, an opportunity to recharge, experiment and return afresh.

    Apologies….have now read back.

Thanks for the pointers last night everyone….for the Clydebank documentary.

While I knew – in no detail – about Clydebank being bombed, I am now much more aware /

better educated than I was yesterday. I will also read back in more detail as I see a lot of personal knowledge has been added here.

Dawn brought an unusual sight here: Cumbrae covered in a light sprinkling of snow. Then it disappeared in a snow shower. Now the sun is shining brightly. Weird weather.

    Wee donation made.

The Huns statement is incredible, essentially saying that McInnes isn’t up to the job because he turned it down.

McInnes is between a rock and a hard place of his own choosing, many Aberdeen fans don’t want him anymore and consider him a failure anyway, especially in light of the two capitulations against the Huns and the Huns support didn’t want a Timmy sounding (and apparently an uber Tim) assistant manager called Doherty at SEVCO.

The SMSM will toe the PR lie over the next few days, no doubt.

One of the unmentioned sub-texts of the McInnes snub and the Sevco statement (ha, ha, ha …) is that it means they don’t have to buy any players in January.

With no new manager in place it will be spun that there was no sense in buying players when there was no manager. Even if they get someone in, the spin will be that there was no time to assess the squad and start the re-build!

I’m off to Belfast tomorrow with herself to go and see Mrs Browns Boys. I’ll be in the famose Rock Bar early on Sunday for the Celtic v Hibs game.

  19. Breaking News

Kilmarnock “striker” Kris Boyd has been sent home from training today and excused from playing tomorrow on compassionate grounds.

Manager Steve Clarke said he realised immediately that he had lost his captain for the weekend when he switched on Sky Sports at teatime yesterday.

It’s too early to say if Boydy will be available for selection next weekend. It may hinge on whether or not Alex McLeish is coming out of hibernation.

I remember watching a BBC programme called Monty Python and really not getting it –I now realise it was preparing me for the wonderful experience of watching David Davis — Brexit Minister –.. 21. So when the dust has settled Celtic has won the League Cup, Qualified for the CL Groups, Qualified for UEFA and maintained an unbeaten run domestically through season 2017/8 so far.

I realise that some on here expect a lot better. For me with only 16 countries represented in post xmas European Club Football and countries like Holland, Poland, Belgium and Croatia not represented and with it being just the 7th time in 38 years Celtic has been in Europe after xmas I have quite a good feeling about things Celtic. Despite Tuesday’s poor showing.
