Stunning charity effort by Celtic fans

936

A big well done to everyone who participated in the efforts to send Vanessa Riddle to Philadelphia for crucial medical treatment.  The £500k required was raised yesterday.

Brogan Rogan’ brought the issue to the blog and Taggsybhoy arranged the CQN Music Quiz earlier this month, our first formal activity for Vanessa.  Penfold gave us a signed Celtic top at the quiz which raised an incredible £5000 on eBay (plus gift aid) from a Celtic fan who, quite simply, gets what following this club is all about.

Not only did he pay £5000 but he told us to keep the shirt and use it again!  We then raffled the shirt on eBay and raised almost £1400.  You are all part of an incredible story by an incredible support.

The draw for the signed shirt took place at Uefa headquarters in Nyon, you can watch the video of below and find out if you won.

Our thanks again to Andrew in Belfast for his tireless help with the site this week.  The new ‘whyte’ template is in place and we’ll continue to restore functionality.

Correct. I now have to try and avoid the blog and twitter during the 2 hour period between 6 and 8.

I don’t their papers, and I certainly don’t want to listen to their ill-informed nonsense about my club.

Private Members’ motions are of no importance and the non-show of Scottish MPs tells its own tale. Except as you rightly say a waste of your local representative’s time.

Originally they said there was 6 mill, then they said 4 went to pay a tax bill, VAT for the ticket sale presumably, they now say there is 2 mill missing.

They are playing games, they are stringing things along, trying to make their fees no doubt, they litteraly do not have a pot to piss in.

They need to make the game at the weekend, it’s their last serious income till the game against us, they can’t make it imo.

Poor Yorkston I really feel for him. Newsnow reporting:

Dunfermline have announced a loss of £431,621 for the year ended 31 May, 2011, having lost close to £1m in the previous 12 months.

The figure included player and management bonuses of nearly £185,000 as a result of winning promotion.

“Our immediate focus is to retain our position in the SPL and generate profitability from our trading results,” said chairman John Yorkston.

“We are hopeful that we can finish the 2011/12 season on a high note.”

Turnover at the SPL’s bottom club improved by 31% compared to the last year.

Chief executive Bill Hodgins added: “It was through enormous hard work by all staff, and especially those in hospitality, sales and marketing, that enabled us to improve our financial situation and a great deal of praise also has to go to the football management staff who secured promotion to the SPL with the same financial resources as the previous year.

“Obviously more work is required as we aim to achieve a small surplus this season and then to build upon that for future years.

“This will still be challenging, given economic conditions, the impact of the postponement of our Kilmarnock game followed by the recent insolvency of Rangers FC which could also impact on other member clubs.”

The Pars, who are still waiting for £80,000 gate money owed to them by Rangers, are three points adrift of Hibernian at the foot of the table.

  10. Meanwhile over on planet FF (im staying undercover till the day of liquidation) much backslapping and high 6s over a letter one of their brethren has sent to his MP. To prevent anyone choking on their jelly and ice cream, i’ve translated what the lunatic really means in quotation marks

    Dear Ms Doyle,

    “Oi b**ch”

I was extremely interested when I heard today that the UK Government were to hold a debate instigated by your Honourable friend Mr Thomas Docherty MP on the role of HMRC in respect of the tax liabilities of Scottish Football Clubs.

“Heard ma mucker talking aboot some suits talking aboot the gers and those HRMC bassa’s”

At this time I must apologise for not knowing any of the names of your fellow MP’s this is due to the microphone levels when the MP’s were being addressed by the chair.

“I couldnt gie a flying f*ck who yous urr aw ah want tae no is whit school ye’s went tae?”

When I tuned in however I was deeply saddened that only 2 Scottish MP’s had bothered to turn up, to a debate on what you must agree is the hottest topic in current affairs within Scotland in the past fortnight, I think it will even have eclipsed Scottish Independence for column inches in the national press.

“when a goat ma stream up I couldnae f**kin believe how few c**ts care about the gers, it’s aw we’ve been talking aboot oan follow follow in the past 2 weeks”

It was pointed out by 1 of your Honourable friends that maybe some Scottish MP’s may have chosen not to be present due to any adverse reactions by certain constituents towards their MP’s for commenting on or showing support for Rangers. I took that statement to mean that Scottish MP’s would get a backlash from non-Rangers supporting constituents most especially those of a Celtic persuasion. I hope your absence on this occasion was not down to that reason or in fact that you thought the topic unworthy of your presence.

“Some kn*b jockey said some of the bruthers urr feart tae declare their devotion tae the Rangers. I took that tae mean some of the other kn*b jockeys didnae show up in case they upset the f*nians. If that’s why yoo wernae there expect a bomb in the post pal”

For myself and many others of your constituents, as lifelong Rangers Supporters I feel this issue is 1 of great importance not only for Rangers Football Club but also the knock on effects within the West of Scotland and Scotland as a whole.

“Me n Billy, as diehard bears fink this of hunners of importance tae the Gers and every other proddy in the country”

Rangers as you are probably well aware a historical and cultural institution in Scotland supported by people the length and breadth of Scotland, The UK and across the world and the implications should Rangers cease, would not only affect the supporters and staff but would affect the economy as a whole in Scotland and further afield.

“The Mighty Gers as every good bluenose knows are supported by hunners ay alkys, junkies and benefit cheats up and doon the cuntry, Brittania and rest ay the universe “

As you can appreciate fans travelling to and from the games will spend their hard earned cash on various things on the day of a match ranging from travel to food and beverages to accommodation. Companies such as SPT and local coach hire firms, used by supporters and supporters clubs alike to transport them from their communities to Ibrox or away stadia to support their team and also the local communities of the other SPL clubs that cash is spent within when Rangers Supporters come to town would all lose out heavily.

“When ra peepul travel tae games they spend their giro on loadsa hings including bevy, fags and skins. Companies such as SPT and local coach hire firms need tae add mair security when the bears are playing at the big hoose so they’ll lose their joabs as will the security firms, off licence’s and waste disposal free lancers of other local communities when ra peepul go on tour”

Also should Rangers cease there is a possibility I hear that the TV contract would be invalid and would it be unlikely to be reconstructed meaning that clubs would lose out on a huge source of income, an income that would they would struggle to replace and add to that the lost income of the gate receipts that Rangers supporters generate.

“And eh and eh and eh whit aboot the TV contract eh? Whose gonnae pay tae watch the t*igs? No me anyway. Even though i’ll no cancel ma sky tv coz i’ll have f*ck all else tae dae but watch tele so sky wont be losing out oan a penny fae subscriptions . And Motherwell getting an increased gate against Hibs coz they have a chance of a champions league spoat is a wan aff, they’ll all die wie oot the gers”

Most importantly though are the futures and livelihoods of the people who are, shall we say at the bottom of the chain within Ibrox, those not on £1000’s a week. People like the cleaners, admin staff and office workers. Unlike the playing staff these people are very unlikely to find employment straight away if they lose their job and as such it would impact on them the greatest these are the people who stand to lose out the most.

“Maist importantly though whit aboot the jannys, cleaners and the tea lady that are no made ay money? The people we didnae gie a f**k aboot when we were shafting their pensions by stealing their PAYE. The people we still wont gie a f**k aboot as long as ye let us aff wie oor debts tae everywan n their granny. Whit aboot them?”

I understand that Rangers are in administration not for “the big tax case”, as it has become known but for failure to pay PAYE and VAT as and when due. I like all other tax payers feel aggrieved and let down by Mr Craig Whyte, Rangers Chairman as never before in our history has events like this ever occurred, its shall we say ‘not the Rangers way’.

“I’ve no idea aboot aw this tax jargon that people are flapping aboot but since Rangerz and their supporters have forever been shining examples to the world it’s clearly no, shall we say, ‘the rangers way’ so can we no just sweep it under the carpet wie a nod a wink and a handshake.”

On the subject of “the big tax case” could I ask if you would be able to answer 2 points for me?

“Now tell me two hings ya bampot”

    1. The MP that was representing HMRC at this debate stated that he couldn’t state specifics regarding The Rangers investigations. Well could you find out or ask the Honourable gentleman how details of The Rangers “big tax case” found its way onto the internet and into public domain as I don’t think anybody within Ibrox would have released them. Therefor could you ask the said MP if he could instigate an investigation from an HMRC point of view to ascertain the cause of the leak and breach of the Data Protection Act?

“Whit papish c**t grassed us up?”

    2. I understand that various other companies have settled large tax bills for a percentage such as Goldman Sachs and Vodafone, bills that were many many times that of The Rangers and if HMRC accepted it from them then surely they then can’t treat other businesses differently.

“I no f**k all aboot the circumstances of HMRCs dealings wie Vodaphone or Goldman saks but some ill informed nobody on follow follow says he’s heard they made a deal wie Hector and we want tae no how no for us an aw? Doesnae matter if shoaps are closing all over the place coz ay unpaid tax were rangerz ye no whit am saying pal”

May I thank you at this point for taking the time to read my concerns and points of view and I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

“I’m gonnae post this oan follow follow so the bears fink im pure dead smart and no ma sh*t coz iv goat a thesaurus and am talking pure dead formal and that ye no so ye better get back tae quick smart or yer gaun on the banned list”

  13. Prescient or what?

Sunday Herald Oct Sept 21 2003

Quinn won’t splash out and sink ship.

Michael Grant talks to the Celtic chairman ahead of next month’s agm where fans will be told prudence is the only option.

Celtic chairman Brian Quinn is to tell supporters that it would be “highly irresponsible” to spend significant money on new players because of the club’s unhealthy financial condition.

Celtic’s board of directors are bracing themselves for hostile questioning from shareholders at the club’s annual general meeting on October 3, the eve of the first Old Firm game of the season.

Many supporters have been angered by what they see as a lack of ambition from the Celtic directors and have accused them of jeopardising the team’s progress in the Champions League, as well as manager Martin O’Neill’s willingness to stay as manager, by not releas¬ing funds for new signings.

Despite some obvious areas which have to be addressed in the first-team squad, such as a creative replacement for Lubomir Moravcik, it is more than a year since O’Neill was last able to buy a player.

In a stance that is unlikely to appease those supporters who are critical of the board’s conservatism, Quinn will tell the agm that the club will not risk becoming another Leeds United who are in grave financial peril, In chasing the dream in the Champions League and spending far more than they can afford.

“This isn’t going to win us any popularity contests. It’s understandable that we’ve been criticised.

“The fans – and I count the board among them – obviously want to see ‘big name’ players coming in every summer, but we won’t put the club’s very future at risk simply to deflect criticism.”

Celtic declared a £4.5 million pre-tax loss in their annual accounts to May 2003, a period which incorporated their run to the Uefa Cup final. Their total debt rose by £1.3m to £17.8m.

Although that figure is less than a third of Rangers’ debt, it not tempt Celtic’s directors to increase it a little simply to finance a substantial O’Neill signing. As it stands the club’s wage bill has increased by 80% since O’Neill became manager.

“We’ve lost over £20m in the past three years and that’s despite a run in the Champions League and getting to the final in Seville,” said Quinn.

“People think that there must be money somewhere, but that’s simply not true. The fact is we’ve been spending more than we bring in. It would he highly irresponsible to do anything other than take the hard decisions we have been taking.

“It should never be forgotten that financial mismanagement almost closed this club 10 years ago. No-one is more ambitious for Celtic than the board members, but we won’t risk financial ruin for the club.

“Those who think I’m scare-mongering should have a chat with the chairman of Leeds. The fans there enjoyed a run to the Champions League semi ¬final, only to see their team haemorrhaging money, flog their best players to service crazy debt levels, escape releg¬ation by the skin of their teeth and almost go out of business.

“These might not be exciting times in terms of signings, but we have responsibility not to let our football club go the way others have. Thereafter we can get back to a more manageable position and I’d ask the fans to stick with us through these short-term problems.”

O’Neill’s frustration regarding his financial straitjacket is often apparent, but Quinn claimed his working relationship with the Irishman remained healthy and was based on a mutual understanding of the club’s limitations. O’Neill, he said, had not been denied any new player during the summer for financial reasons.

“We did not refuse any specific request Martin made in the summer and we were working to bring several players to the club right up to the deadline. The budget is not set in stone. Because of the nature of football a budget must be flexible. Martin is very sensible when he approaches the board.

“I have a good working relationship with Martin and with Dermot Desmond [Celtic’s majority shareholder]. We have had disagreements, as people in any business do, but Dermot and I tend to reach the same conclusion on most things.”

Celtic will soon have a new boardroom figure to deflect the flak from Quinn, Desmond and the other directors. In the next few days the club will announce the person is to replace Ian McLeod, who stepped down as chief executive in April.

McLeod and his predecessor, Allan MacDonald, were both dragged into several high-profile controversies and that made Celtic even more cautious and patient in their search for a successor.

“We hope to have our new chief executive in place by the agm. We have made mistakes with this appointment in the past and that makes you humble. You can’t really tell whether somebody can handle the attention that goes with the post until they are in it.”

O’Neill is believed to have already met the leading candidates. “Martin drives the football side of the business and we have taken all possible steps to ensure that the successful candidate will work well with him. We also have to make sure that the responsibilities of the new person are fully complementary with Martin’s own pivotal role.”

Shareholders at the agm may also be told that Celtic have decided not to copy Rangers by spending heavily on a multi-million pound youth academy. Celtic’s belief, having consulted clubs in the Premiership, is that the cost of a facility such as Murray Park, which was built for £11m and has annual running costs of around £1.5 million would probably not be recouped from the sale of the young players developed within it. Instead the club will build only a training complex which will be close to Celtic Park, but not at the current Barrowfield ground, which is too small for redevelopment and will eventually be sold.

“It will not be a Murray Park clone. It will be smaller and cost less because I think the change in the transfer market means there’s less money in developing your young players than there was previously,” Quinn added. “That’s the feedback I’ve had from the clubs in England who have built academies.”

The agm will be reassured that, contrary to rumours, Celtic’s main coaching staff of O’Neill, John Robertson and Steve Walford have all signed the rolling one-year contracts put to them earlier this year. An attempt will also be made to change Henrik Larsson’s mind about leaving Parkhead at the end of his contract in May.

“Henrik knows his own mind but on the other hand Martin can be very persuasive,” said Quinn. “We will make one last attempt to persuade Henrik to stay.”

Celtic are permanently indebted to Larsson, but that is not the debt that will dominate the agenda at their agm.

  15. It’s amusing to hear that some deluded Orcs still believe that they will only be banned from Europe for three years,in the worst scenario.

If they are shown to have issued two contracts to players, and UEFA were not made aware of this when they granted the European Licences to compete in the Champions League, then they are in deep trouble.

I’d expect UEFA to make a harsh example of them, for the years of egregious misconduct by their wilful custodians.

It’s one thing to cheat Celtic and the other sides in the SPL,with the complicity of the SFA.

Quite another matter when UEFA’s own regulations are flouted in such a blatant and disdainful manner.

I’d expect UEFA to make a harsh example of them for their outrageous arrogance.

By dint of their financial impropriety, they have sought to gain unfair advantage over other teams they faced in European competition, including the campaign which culminated in the notorious “Sack of Manchester”.

Expect a 5-10 year ban from European football…in addition to any three year ban which they will automatically attract were they to go into liquidation and re-emerge as a NewCo.

At no time in their history have they brought any grace or glamour to Europe’s most glorious and prestigious club tournament.
