Substantially unlike Celtic

219

The statement from Bolton Wanderers joint administrator that Celtic agreed to pay “substantially more than the financial obligation” for Luca Connell is substantially unlike Celtic.

Bolton dropped to the third tier of English football in May, seven years after dropping out of the Premiership.  They spend 19 years mixing it in the top flight of English football, and, under chairman, the late Phil Gartside, were advocates of inviting Celtic and (then) Rangers into the league.

In 2009 Gartside, anticipating their place at the top table could not last forever, proposed a two-tier Premier League, with Celtic and Rangers invited to compete in the second tier.  Gartside understood what he called the “financial polarisation” would wreak havoc on clubs like his, as they over-reached trying to avoid the calamity of relegation.

Relationships with administrators are fleeting affairs.  Different people will soon be in charge, but Bolton will remain in hardship for some time, and Celtic will remain keen to build different types of relationships with a variety of clubs.  The “substantial” element of this payment was building affinity.

  8. Nice warm summer’s morning with a gentle breeze in the Chilterns…

T’was interesting reading this from Paul67…

“The statement from Bolton Wanderers’ joint administrator that Celtic agreed to pay “substantially more than the financial obligation” for Luca Connell is substantially unlike Celtic.”

It suggests that Celtic did what had to be done to get the deal over the line, so that all parties could come away feeling good and the transaction done in a timely manner.

From my understanding young Luca was in a predicamemt, he wanted to do the right thing by Bolton – the Club had given him his chance and coached him – they were now in dire straits.

Now he could have gone to an English Club and secured BW a higher development fee.

He could have waited and signed a professional deal when BW’s next owners put it in front of him, thereby giving something back to the Club.

However having been to Celtic Park and knowing that was where he wanted to be and having been advised of his legal position he could have got his wish to come to Celtic and it would have only cost us a £250K development fee.

It could have left a very nasty taste at the impoverished Lancashire Club and beyond and it put the youngster in an awkward position.

So Celtic, as said, out of character, offered a “substantisl” extra on top of the fee to ensure goodwill and that the deal was done.

Hope our Club’s generosity ensures a karmic Celtic career for the talented youngster.

    Welcome to Celtic Luca…

    Hail Hail

  9. Good morning from a dry but overcast and mild Garngad

So now it the wizard of Oz who is being poached away according to the smsm.

We have had KT, Cal Mac, Ntcham now Rogic….. Something stinks here me thinks.

Why would any manager be courting bids for his most successful players when going for 9IAR and CL qualifiers coming up. Surely there is no way that all 4 of them want away and Zenit for Tam R, he cannot handle the cold here never mind in Petersburg. Nah I think the smsm are at pains to do everything to disrupt our pre season.

Among the Scottish/Irish connections, apart from his disputed birth near Bangor:-

The alternative name for Gall was Gallus

He delivered Fridiburga (now, one of our national dishes) from demons

& while praying in the woods, he was charged at by a BEAR, whom he promptly rebuked, leading to the bear slinking back to the trees to gather firewood for the Saint to keep warm

    David 66,

I don’t think the press are making up the interest in Celtic players. If anything they are playing it down.

Arsenal without doubt want Tierney. I do think that Rodgers would take any or all of Tierney, McGregor, Forrest, Edouard maybe even Rogic if he could get him for less than £15m.

There’s other issues at play with players here too. Rogic might not get a game under Lennon and may have been guaranteed a move in his new contract. Celtic want to move some of these guys on because they know they are at the peak of what they can offer Celtic and the player may feel he could earn more and have an easier time elsewhere perhaps in the EPL. A young Australian who could earn 50k per week. Celtic could find the current transfer window with sales of Ntcham and Rogic. Two squad players who may go on to flourish elsewhere but it’s questionable how much impact they will have.

I find it funny that Celtic supporters deride the media for stories about Rangers players going for X or Y but when it’s our players it’s because they think the media don’t want us to have them and they are doing it to unsettle us.

  13. Shouldn’t be bothering with lyrics for a player who hasn’t signed yet. I should be making up songs about heated driveways and balance sheets or composing a lament for departing stars like KT, Calmac and the Wizard of Oz because we will sell everybody and get nobody in and we’re all mugs for supporting this team…..

    Anyway:-

    Way down Deep

    His parents took a journey

Up to Antwerp with a song-O (false rhymes n’everything here)

He played fitba for the Bruges, St. Truidens and the Rapid

But then one day decided that his life was kind of crap (id)- (another one)

His parents told him not to be so egocentric

So he came all the way to Scotland just to play for Glasgow Celtic (hard to get even a false rhyme)

    Mbombo! Mbombo!

    His favourite drink is Strongbow

When he plays for Glasgow Celtic

No more crosses to the back Row (of the stand)

  14. From Jj:

I have been reliably informed that Brendan Rodgers agent has recently signed up messrs Tierney and McGregor and that their heads have been turned by the rewards that await in the EPL. It is just a matter of time and not if when Celtic lose them for a £45m combined fee.

Bear in mind we were talking about the Perraud deal being done this time last week.

  18. mullet and co 2 on

Just to add to that last post. It also slaps it home to the close season media football club champs that a squad player is attracting real interest at a sum well in excess of what they could ever hope for , for one of their stand outs.

Rangers can’t sell a squad player for anywhere close to £2m never mind find player purchases to enhance the first team. They would be funding debt. We would be funding the first team without touching £40m in the bank.

Reality is getting harder and harder for them.

I think there is a big difference in intent when saying:

    a) Sevco are after Superstat A and B

    and

    b) Celtic are about to lose Superstars A and B.

    a) creates an image of an ambitious Club going forward ;

    b) creates the opposite. A club in decline.

I put more stock in the comments here on CQN. There is no logic to it. Leicester City have already signed a LB this summer and still have England international Ben Chilwell at the club.

Though if we are signing Mbombo and Perraud then it certainly looks ominous as far as KT goes.

  23. By the way, it was funny to read that Arsenal offered Crystal Palace half of their valuation for Zaha.

The same was true of KT. Even the minor improvements to the offer leave them well off Celtic’s valuation.
