Substantially unlike Celtic

219

The statement from Bolton Wanderers joint administrator that Celtic agreed to pay “substantially more than the financial obligation” for Luca Connell is substantially unlike Celtic.

Bolton dropped to the third tier of English football in May, seven years after dropping out of the Premiership.  They spend 19 years mixing it in the top flight of English football, and, under chairman, the late Phil Gartside, were advocates of inviting Celtic and (then) Rangers into the league.

In 2009 Gartside, anticipating their place at the top table could not last forever, proposed a two-tier Premier League, with Celtic and Rangers invited to compete in the second tier.  Gartside understood what he called the “financial polarisation” would wreak havoc on clubs like his, as they over-reached trying to avoid the calamity of relegation.

Relationships with administrators are fleeting affairs.  Different people will soon be in charge, but Bolton will remain in hardship for some time, and Celtic will remain keen to build different types of relationships with a variety of clubs.  The “substantial” element of this payment was building affinity.

  1. Stagnating doesn’t happen to everyone.

Matthews failed to establish himself as 1st choice right back for Sunderland, operating in the 3rd tier of English football.

That he didn’t let us down 4 – 5 years ago, becomes more and more less relevant as the years tick by.

Sign him, if you are happy for both him and Ralston to fight between 3rd and 4th choice Right Back at Celtic.

Everyone stagnates at Sunderland. Has any player improved there in recent years? It’s a sinking ship.

Matthews is much younger than Ledley or Hooper who will be in decline. Adam will be coming into his prime and would be worth giving a chance to.

Anyone watch the Sunderland documentary on Netflix that followed their fortunes in the Championship?

Have watched the first couple of episodes, fair to say they thought the series would chart their progress as they made a series tilt at returning to the top flight at first time of asking….and ended up getting relegated!

Martin Bain features heavily and appeared close to tears once or twice before they parted company with Grayson.

But if anyone thought our transfer targets on a Word doc was behind the times in ep.2 Martin Bain had a notepad with stuff scribbled down and he actually said that he wishes it was more scientific but it really wasnt! Go figure.

  5. If Gutman is not coming to us this season, what do we gain from sending him back to Charlotte? We do not have Jim McGuiness to look after him and they play in a lower level than MLS, where the US authorities froze him out because he did not join their system.

Would we not be better served loaning him out to a club like Bolton or another SPFL club rather than ask him to play at a level that looks beneath his abilities.

P.S. I see the USA men’s team just narrowly beat a liqueur in last night’s Concacaf quarter-finals

Presumably, its just as difficult to get a work permit in England.

We’d have to send him to Belgium or the Netherlands where they are more relaxed about that kind of thing.

The one thing that strikes me about this Celtic squad, including coaching staff, this year as opposed to last year is the spirit & unity that is apparent. All of that accomplished withou Kolo Toure too.

If we are determined, united & organised we should have enough to qualify. This is not unknown territory for NFL.

There are signs now that the squad is much more HIS squad than anyone else’s.

Thought we still payed within ourselves against Weiner & should have scored 5 or 6.

How did Griff miss his open goal chance from 5 yards out?

Thought Bitton strolled through the 1st half & good to see him back from his injury hit last season.

There are signes that Mikey Johnson understands that dazzling runs are worth more if he lays it off to a colleague in a better position to score. I like that Neil has said that he’s being encouraged to toughen up (I take that to mean that he goes through the same sessions that produced “Ironman” Christie.

Great to see Bayo play & especially to see him score. Very happy if all of the striker’s burden this season doesn’t fall on Odsonne’s shoulders.

Looks like Hayes will be our starting left back against Sarajevo, although I agree that Gutman deserves to be kept in Glasgow rather than sent back to play in the USL. He is in the iddle of his season in Charlotte so his fitness was impressive, but he showed an awareness & an ability to execute in the Celtic team.

At this moment in time, Tony Ralston is the likely starter at RB, but as we’ve seen since the days of Strachan, we need at least 2 fit & young fullbacks available for both flanks. Be nice to see an addition or two. The scuttle from Lennybhoy is always welcome – so here’s hoping. Anyone know if Manny perez was/is with the squad in Austria? He has pace & energy in abundance & is on loan at North Carolina FC.

Thought Shved looked composed & a threat to the opposition in his 45 minutes. With Calmac, Hayes, Luca Connell, Griff, Gutman & Shved on our books – are we trying to cornber the market in left footed players?

Disappointed that Tom Rogic is injured again. Since he returned from playing for Australia last season he’s been a shadow of his former self. Sounds like he played while carrying an injury & now it’s his ankle. Could be out for a while & then he’ll spend weeks on the old wobble board building up the strength in that ankle.

Just read that Timothy Weah has been sold to Lille for 10 million euros. Decent wee player but Mikey Johnson, Ewan henderson are better. Can you imagine the wages Weah will be on though.

    Have a good one.

What is “Football Scotland”; are they a legit media outlet in Scotland?

This seemed to be a source of many of the “KT to Arsenal” reports in the media.

The things you learn. Just discovered that the oldest trophy awarded in Shinty (the Camanachd) is called the Glasgow Celtic Society Cup, most recently won by Oban, and has been awarded since 187 9. Question, could this be the source of Brother Walfrid’s choice of name for the new football club in 1887? I could be wrong but I think both shinty and hurling matches, along with many other sports, were indeed played at Celtic Park. Early doors.
