Summary of Rangers situation

1379

In response to some of the more excitable comments from yesterday it might be worthwhile painting the possible scenarios for Rangers.

No Sale

If Bill Miller is unable to complete the sale (remember, he’s not even paid the deposit and has no intention of doing so), the club will reach the end of the season and run out of money.  It will then either expire completely or Duff and Phelps will try to cut a deal with Ticketus to allow Rangers to sell season tickets and retain more of the money than they are currently due.

Rangers could continue to operate in administration for a while to come; Motherwell were in administration for one week short of two years.  The club would be unable to afford player wages after they return to normal in 1 June so would be forced to pare the squad back, whether the ban on player registration remains or not.

Miller completes purchase and the SPL vote him into the league

If Miller completes his purchase, as it stands, the SPL board will have discretion to transfer an insolvent club’s share in the league to a Newco.  Neil Doncaster has pinned his colours to the mast on this issue, Steve Lomas explained St Johnstone’s willingness to also vote Newco in.  Celtic will vote against which means if either Motherwell or Dundee United vote in favour of Newco, they will be allowed into the league.

I have no doubt that both Motherwell and Dundee United will vote in favour of Newco.  The SPL will vote to introduce a new procedure for dealing with Newco on Monday but it’s far from clear this proposal will get enough support.

For Miller, there are complications with this issue.  He would inherit all football and financial penalties due for Rangers and would also be expected to pay Rangers football debts – around £3.5m.

You can largely ignore the £160k Fit and Proper fines from the SFA but the SPL inquiry into Improper Registration of Players for over a decade will be the biggest charge in the history of British sport.  We should be looking at fines commensurate with the financial benefits accrued and multi-year sporting punishments.

If the SPL rule amendments Newco are rejected on Monday (as I expect), there are some who are concerned SPL board will impose lighter penalties than those suggested by Neil Doncaster’s new rules.

Alternatively, Miller could tell the SPL to stuff it and apply to the Scottish Football League.  Ally McCoist has already threatened this in response to the already-imposed fines and the notion is popular among Rangers fans I know.  If the did this, Newco would not have to pay Rangers football debts and would be subject to no penalties or player registration bans.  They could budget for three years of lower-league football and then tool up for the summer of 2015.

You can expect some though talking from Rangers on going to the Third Division in an attempt to spook the SPL into offering limited, single-season penalties.

Among the many unknowns, we can be sure of a few things:

Rangers Football Club, established in 1872, is finished.

Some form of phoenix will happen, if not for next season, then probably by 2013.

The SPL will complete the inquiry into Improper Registration of players, whether Rangers exist or not.  If a Newco is granted Rangers SPL share, penalties will be punitive.

Notions that ‘Rangers’ are going to emerge debt-free, strong and able to compete as though nothing has happened is simply nonsense.  Their club is dead.  They will start a new club, it will either be back in the SPL unhindered in 2015 (or 16) or will be in the SPL next season, heavily burdened for many years to come.

My prediction is for the latter.

Thickle fans like to see the team winning regardless of opposition. Demote the to Div 3 and they will turn out in great numbers and will grow and grow until they are back.

If the stay in SPL with restictions on players then their fan base will crumble watching years of rubbish.

Newco in SPL with sanctions is Celtics “preferred” option.

Think about it, why would all SPL clubs vote to cut off an escape route they could all use?

Either Newco gets hit or its no deal.

However, if Paul’s on the money, and he usually is, the Zombie Huns in the SPl with CORRECT heavy penalties is probably the best scenario for us. They would be unable to compete for years, a decade, possibly even facing relegation. Slaughtered by us frequenty, glory-hunting Orcs deserting in their droves.

Do you really believe any of what you’ve written? Rangers in the SPL will face relegation, a decade perhaps longer of being uncompetitive?

I absolutely believe a Rangers allowed back into the SPL will win the league within 5 years and be in the top 6 each season which to me, is a totally insufficient penalty for their cheating.

The most important thing a move to division 3 would imply is that newco Rangers are a newco, no mibbees-aye, mibbees-naw, yes and unequivocal.

They’d be there for a reason.

For a team who’ve never been relegated, in fact never finished lower than 6th, ever, that would be a tough thing to reconcile.

While Rangers have spent close on a billion pounds since Murray arrived and gone bust, they’d be playing teams in div 3 none of whom will have spent even half of one percent of that over the period.

Have to agree to disagree then.

I think there’s a good chance they’ll rot in the lower divisions where they belong.

The zombie support will be true to character and turn up in their hundreds when they don’t get their own way.

The malicious influence of their “club” will disintegrate over the next few years. Death by a thousand cuts (still too feeble a punishment though).

Sanctions in the SPL will not suffice. In that circumstance they would continue as per, We arra peepil, doubled in arrogance, with continued collusion from the SFA and MIBs to ensure they keep Celtic out of Europe, clinging on to our legs to drag us under with them and the rest of Scottish football into total oblivion.

If we are to continue playing in Scottish football, Hun FC must die for our sakes and for the sake of Scottish football itself. However, the SFA need to go as well, which I think is the real big fish in all this.

  12. Call it newco, call it phoenixing, call it a zombie call it an incubator. It’s all about trying to be both a new company and an old company at the same time.

They want something that continues. That claims the history of Rangers. Not a new company then.

Yet they also want to dump most of the debts and start again. Not the old company then.

All we are asking is that they pick one or the other and that the rules then be followed.

If Rangers remain as Rangers they have Rangers’ history – but they also have Rangers’ debts to pay and Rangers’ punishments to suffer..

If it is a new company, then there is no rule and no precedent in Scottish football that allows a brand club to start anywhere but the bottom.

  13. What a truly desperate place CQN has now become. Utterly depressing, with Celtic supporters split and arguing amongst themselves over what may or may not happen to the Huns, and what the Celtic board may or may not do. All this at a time when things are on the up and up for a Celtic team on the verge of a real generation of domination.

Greenjedi summed it all up for me yesterday when he slammed the Celtic board for not moving in now to liquidate Rangers on the basis that they are one of the listed creditors. Another CQNer – Mort – correctly pointed out that while they are in Administration, the Huns are protected from any further creditor action. Not content with that, back comes Greenjedi with something about the Celtic board “worshipping at the feet of Rangers FC” or words to that effect.

Absolutely unbelievable and typical of a lot of comments in recent days.

For the time being, I am going to continue reading Paul’s articles, and leave it at that. His reports and opinions are vital and a real oasis of information and truth in a desert of MSM obfuscation and spin. I will not be reading any comments. It really is too depressing. Life’s too short and too precious.

Nothing has happened yet. We’ve been cheated by others since I was born, I still went to the games. We all did. Now our paranoia has been vindicated by proof positive, but nothing has changed. I am buying my season ticket and I will continue to subscribe to Celtic TV and I will stillbuy the merchandise.

If we resign from the league and don’t play any more games there are legal ramifications.

If we resign from the league there and go to court there will be a price to pay.

Ifwe resign from the league we would fragment and be no more.

There are a lot of people out there who count on the help of Celtic and the Celtic Family.

If Rangers are still in the league next season I will think some more about where I stand but at the moment remembering that nothing has happened I am not so conceited that I believe those in office at Parkhead (all of them Celtic men) will not do the right thing. I do not think that my ethical or moral pedestal is any higher than theirs.

I will do what I believe is the right thing to do andI will live with it and I think – for me – the right thing to do is to continue to Support my club and my culture, without drama, until I am dead; Or we all are.

At the moment we are all getting unduly vexed by hypothesis.

    As if!

Substitute Celtic for every other team in the world (except Rangers oldco) and the same answer applies.

  18. !!Bada Bing!! on

How many penalties will “wee Willie” give the huns today?I think pro rata he could give Norris a run for his money.

  19. The vast majority of us have little idea as to how our ‘esteemed’ board will vote regarding a newco being granted direct access to the SPL. I, along with the overwhelming majority of Tims, hope the board grow a pair and use every threat and avenue open to them to block a Zombie Hun FC gaining automatic admittance to the SPL. However being one of life’s great cynics I see little hope of their doing so. In recent memory when have the board ever done anything of substance at the behest of the support?

As a recent example of them not doing anything i can mention the internecine fighting caused by the ‘Poppygate’ shambles and the board’s refusal to acquiesce to the reasonable suggestions for a compromise put to them by the various supporters groups who allegedly represent the majority of the Celtic fan base. We were told their hands were tied by SPL rules and as such they couldn’t do anything. I don’t want to come across as a board hater or doubter as I am not I judge each event as they deal with it. I am very concerned that their actions or indeed inactivity regarding a newco will cause a huge schism in the support. A simple shot across the bows of the SPL in the form of a statement from the board, a few words about their concerns about sporting morals and the integrity of the Scottish game and how they would need to revaluate their stance should sporting integrity be ignored would, I believe, go a long way to assuage the doubts of many.

I for one don’t buy in to the theory that the Newhun FC will be shackled for years if they are in the SPL that’s total utter nonsense, 3 years of hurt max is all they will receive in Scotland. Now ask me if I would contemplate 3 years of penury for stealing and basically getting away with stealing multimillions of pounds for over a decade while I get to keep my house, holiday home and the family jewels.

  28. This notion that Scottish football NEEDS RFCIA has to be dispelled. The so-called ‘lesser’ teams who will be having a taste of European nights will,if anything, revitalise the game & bring them much needed revenue. And the angst that RFCIA bring to the table will be gone.

They are,in any event, going to be a humbled mediocrity for decades.

    Keep The Faith!

  29. Regardless of what league TFOD are in next season, Celtic have to be pushing for more transparency with the MIB.

In spite of the points penalties that are imposed, TFOD could play a team of lepers next season and with the help of the MIB still overcome any points penalties.

Of course their will be consequences to certain actions, but what do we do? I dont think i have any higher moral standards that the Celtic board, but i do believe they have a responsibility to us.

We only want leadership, by the time we do anything now it will be too late, things are moving at extreme speed to ensure newco carry on as normal, believe me, why do you think they cancelled the meeting last Monday to vote in the proposals for further sanctions for newco’s?

It was a deal breaker for Wild Bill that’s why, that’s why he is desperate to get newco up and running before next weekend so he can fullfill the last fixture with newco and receive no further sanction.

I am not being over dramatic by saying that this is the most incredible piece of sanctioned cheating the world game has ever seen, tens of millions of pounds lost to the taxpayer in this country, the Bank holding a gun to the heads of the 10 other SPL clubs to ensure their survival, it is mind boggling, is it just me I dont know but it is heart sickening.

Never mind the EBT’s big tax case and illegal player registrations for the last 10 years….. I think the majority of fans feel the same way as you but mate time is running out at a fair rate of knots, and by the way the wailing and gnashing of teeth now will pale into insignificance when we realize its too late and they have got away with it.
