Summary of Rangers situation

1379

In response to some of the more excitable comments from yesterday it might be worthwhile painting the possible scenarios for Rangers.

No Sale

If Bill Miller is unable to complete the sale (remember, he’s not even paid the deposit and has no intention of doing so), the club will reach the end of the season and run out of money.  It will then either expire completely or Duff and Phelps will try to cut a deal with Ticketus to allow Rangers to sell season tickets and retain more of the money than they are currently due.

Rangers could continue to operate in administration for a while to come; Motherwell were in administration for one week short of two years.  The club would be unable to afford player wages after they return to normal in 1 June so would be forced to pare the squad back, whether the ban on player registration remains or not.

Miller completes purchase and the SPL vote him into the league

If Miller completes his purchase, as it stands, the SPL board will have discretion to transfer an insolvent club’s share in the league to a Newco.  Neil Doncaster has pinned his colours to the mast on this issue, Steve Lomas explained St Johnstone’s willingness to also vote Newco in.  Celtic will vote against which means if either Motherwell or Dundee United vote in favour of Newco, they will be allowed into the league.

I have no doubt that both Motherwell and Dundee United will vote in favour of Newco.  The SPL will vote to introduce a new procedure for dealing with Newco on Monday but it’s far from clear this proposal will get enough support.

For Miller, there are complications with this issue.  He would inherit all football and financial penalties due for Rangers and would also be expected to pay Rangers football debts – around £3.5m.

You can largely ignore the £160k Fit and Proper fines from the SFA but the SPL inquiry into Improper Registration of Players for over a decade will be the biggest charge in the history of British sport.  We should be looking at fines commensurate with the financial benefits accrued and multi-year sporting punishments.

If the SPL rule amendments Newco are rejected on Monday (as I expect), there are some who are concerned SPL board will impose lighter penalties than those suggested by Neil Doncaster’s new rules.

Alternatively, Miller could tell the SPL to stuff it and apply to the Scottish Football League.  Ally McCoist has already threatened this in response to the already-imposed fines and the notion is popular among Rangers fans I know.  If the did this, Newco would not have to pay Rangers football debts and would be subject to no penalties or player registration bans.  They could budget for three years of lower-league football and then tool up for the summer of 2015.

You can expect some though talking from Rangers on going to the Third Division in an attempt to spook the SPL into offering limited, single-season penalties.

Among the many unknowns, we can be sure of a few things:

Rangers Football Club, established in 1872, is finished.

Some form of phoenix will happen, if not for next season, then probably by 2013.

The SPL will complete the inquiry into Improper Registration of players, whether Rangers exist or not.  If a Newco is granted Rangers SPL share, penalties will be punitive.

Notions that ‘Rangers’ are going to emerge debt-free, strong and able to compete as though nothing has happened is simply nonsense.  Their club is dead.  They will start a new club, it will either be back in the SPL unhindered in 2015 (or 16) or will be in the SPL next season, heavily burdened for many years to come.

My prediction is for the latter.

Am I annoyed Celtic won the league? Get a grip of yourself. Seriously. That I should even have to answer that question at all ….

I am simply reporting what I have been told. The club refuses to comment publicly, but the media seem to be speaking with one voice as to what our intentions are, and a few people have told me that Lawwell says the club can done nothing except raise objections and cast a vote. They told me the mood inside Celtic is that it is inevitable and all that is left is to decide the penalty.

If you choose to believe that, fine. Act according to what you think of that situation. If you choose not to believe it, fine, but I do believe it, and I do believe Rangers will be in the SPL when the new season starts.

And based on that, I am not playing ball. I will not pay money to watch a corruption masquerading as football. I will not give tacit support to a league which has just sanctioned financial doping and tax fraud.

As to “depriving Celtic” of support, which some will undoubtedly see that stance as doing … for years fans have been asked to buy tickets whilst the standard of the playing squad withered. Many did so because they believed in the strategy of financial prudence, said strategy which, in the present circumstances, looks like a joke, because other clubs have not followed the same rules, and now will not be properly punished, even when we’re talking about a £100 million fraud.

I will not support either a league I know to be corrupt or a “strategy” which has just been pissed all over, and is now a joke, with our aspirations as the punch line.

Have Celtic said anything yet on Rangers mess? I’d keep powder dry and a straight bat until it is clear what is happening. Fingers of blame are aye ready to point at Celtic. But the HMRC gorilla is standing on the touchline and waiting to enter the field of play.

  5. IMO next season will see FC Taxdodgers in one of two places. In the SPL, sanction free, sticking their 2 fingers up at everyone cause they are the peepil, or alternatively in the courts with no team on the pitch as whytey fights miller and duff & duffer over the who owns the assets.

Anyone who thinks they will go to Div 3 is deluded and anyone who thinks the Celtic board will vote for anything other than the best financial option for them is even more deluded. Celtic will vote for the have your cake and eat it option of Newco in SPL and Celtic almost guaranteed CL entry for a few seasons.

In the meantime, to balance the penalties TFOD will have the SFA will announce TFODNEWCO to be allowed 14 players on the field of play and no goalkeepers for the opposition…………..

I agree on all the punishments you state, i doubt if even 5% of them will be applied to newco.

Here is a scenario for you all to consider, lets say Rangers are hamstrung next season and are terribly struggling in the league and are in danger of being relegated, will we see all the arguments of how the SPL and the TV deal needs rangers?

So will we just cancel relegation if Rangers happen to be the bottom club?

The SPL & SFA, Banks, gang of 10 are all saying over i might add the wishes of 97% of Scottish fans of all clubs that Rangers can never leave the top division come what may, as i said the baw is well and truly burst!

HRMC can’t do anything either. Duff and Phelps have openly declared that the taxman is not going to get paid. They can stamp their feet all they want, they can cry the blues, they can complain bitterly … but in real terms, they have no power now. Rangers are going to dump the debt, that’s it.

They will emerge from this debt free. With their history. With their league place. With no European football for three years, of course, but then with the Fat Game Show Host as their manager I wouldn’t have expected great results in that field anyway. Having had the status conferred upon the as “the club that was too big to punish” their fans will be more arrogant than ever.

Scottish football has capitulated. Our club has capitulated. The game is over. Waiting for UEFA will yield no results. Waiting for the taxman will do no good. This could actually be done by seasons end.

Sad to say it, because I’ve been waiting on this for four years now, writing about it the whole time. And I can see the writing on the wall.

The Huns will stay in the SPL with minimal sanctions.

If that happens I will be disappointed but in reality there is little our club can do but vote against – unless of course you want Celtic to go out of business.

There’s nothing Celtic can do if the SPL allows a Rangers newco into the SPL, other than shoot ourselves in the foot. Can you imagine how jubilant the Huns would be if Celtic did walking away?

I wouldn’t blame anyone who decides to walk away from the game completely if it happens, and I’d be sorely tempted to do the same myself.

But I think we should sit tight for a while yet – despite the machinations of Neil Doncaster, newco cannot play in the SPL without a UEFA license, which requires three years’ worth of audited accounts, and cannot be handed down to them by oldco.

In any case, I don’t believe a word Duff & Duffer say. They have been spouting misinformation since February 14th and you can always tell when they’re lying – their lips move.

I honestly can’t see a newco being up and running before August.

Finally, am I the only one who feels an urge to smash the baldy administrator in the face every time I see his smug coupon on the telly? And I hate violence too!

  22. Does anybody really believe that Neil Lennon would hangaround if the board were to sell our soul for a few hun coins?

You can only leave when you have somewhere to go.

We have nowhere to go and anyone who thinks otherwise is living in a fantasy world.

  24. Lawell and the Board have done well because are not about to go out of business. They did not speculate to accumulate. Others did. Others counselled such action – which would have destroyed us as we did not know the depth of the fiancial doping we were competing against. I trust Lawell and the Board. They have not destroyed us. They are clearly Celtic supporters.

Celtic know this, there is the potential for a big income drop for them unless they can convince the support that in exchange for any parachute to satisfy the commercial angle that they could not prevent, they have gained sanctions that will satisfy any reasonable person are just and proper.

It is a matter of what those will be. The support will probably divide (as usual) into two camps. those saying the Board could have done more, those saying they did what was possible and the debate will go on and on (as usual).

It’s the ‘heavily burdened’ part that astounds me after watching the past few weeks unfold. Top flight status and debt free with 2 transfer window embargos (reduced to one or none on appeal) and token point deductions for ‘x’ years, let not kid ourselves here, 10 points for 2 seasons max.
