Summary of Rangers situation

1379

In response to some of the more excitable comments from yesterday it might be worthwhile painting the possible scenarios for Rangers.

No Sale

If Bill Miller is unable to complete the sale (remember, he’s not even paid the deposit and has no intention of doing so), the club will reach the end of the season and run out of money.  It will then either expire completely or Duff and Phelps will try to cut a deal with Ticketus to allow Rangers to sell season tickets and retain more of the money than they are currently due.

Rangers could continue to operate in administration for a while to come; Motherwell were in administration for one week short of two years.  The club would be unable to afford player wages after they return to normal in 1 June so would be forced to pare the squad back, whether the ban on player registration remains or not.

Miller completes purchase and the SPL vote him into the league

If Miller completes his purchase, as it stands, the SPL board will have discretion to transfer an insolvent club’s share in the league to a Newco.  Neil Doncaster has pinned his colours to the mast on this issue, Steve Lomas explained St Johnstone’s willingness to also vote Newco in.  Celtic will vote against which means if either Motherwell or Dundee United vote in favour of Newco, they will be allowed into the league.

I have no doubt that both Motherwell and Dundee United will vote in favour of Newco.  The SPL will vote to introduce a new procedure for dealing with Newco on Monday but it’s far from clear this proposal will get enough support.

For Miller, there are complications with this issue.  He would inherit all football and financial penalties due for Rangers and would also be expected to pay Rangers football debts – around £3.5m.

You can largely ignore the £160k Fit and Proper fines from the SFA but the SPL inquiry into Improper Registration of Players for over a decade will be the biggest charge in the history of British sport.  We should be looking at fines commensurate with the financial benefits accrued and multi-year sporting punishments.

If the SPL rule amendments Newco are rejected on Monday (as I expect), there are some who are concerned SPL board will impose lighter penalties than those suggested by Neil Doncaster’s new rules.

Alternatively, Miller could tell the SPL to stuff it and apply to the Scottish Football League.  Ally McCoist has already threatened this in response to the already-imposed fines and the notion is popular among Rangers fans I know.  If the did this, Newco would not have to pay Rangers football debts and would be subject to no penalties or player registration bans.  They could budget for three years of lower-league football and then tool up for the summer of 2015.

You can expect some though talking from Rangers on going to the Third Division in an attempt to spook the SPL into offering limited, single-season penalties.

Among the many unknowns, we can be sure of a few things:

Rangers Football Club, established in 1872, is finished.

Some form of phoenix will happen, if not for next season, then probably by 2013.

The SPL will complete the inquiry into Improper Registration of players, whether Rangers exist or not.  If a Newco is granted Rangers SPL share, penalties will be punitive.

Notions that ‘Rangers’ are going to emerge debt-free, strong and able to compete as though nothing has happened is simply nonsense.  Their club is dead.  They will start a new club, it will either be back in the SPL unhindered in 2015 (or 16) or will be in the SPL next season, heavily burdened for many years to come.

My prediction is for the latter.

Guys, does anybody really believe that Peter Lawwell would tell a supporter at a CSC rally confidential information that would spread like wildfire on the web?

    ====

Why would he spread disinformation directly to people who are in all probability shareholders who he works for? He is allegedly quoted as saying Celtic will do nothing but peruse sanctions against them. If indeed he did say this, and there is little to doubt he did given the source, I think that is all the board will do is well basically nothing. And if so it’s a bloody disgrace of the 1st order.

    Kit,

You ask if any thinks the board would risk the back-lash.

They have increased prices, why, when they have supposedly reduced the expenses, your paying more money to watch Celtic in a corrupt league than most clubs in the German league.

They have included old firm games, why , when for people like Auldheid have been telling us it’s out of the spl/sfa’s hands ?

If it is as Auldheid and the rest of us hoped out of the domestic setup hands and they do go, will the board refund the extra for the old firm games ?

My stance was taken when they signed up for old firm united sponsorship they have done nothing to dispell my suspicions, what JF’S has told us only confirms it.

Old Firm united is what you are paying for, rarely agreed with greenjedi but his comment last night is summing it all up for me, worshiping at the feet of the Hun.

The boards message to the Celtic support with this is KNOW YOUR PLACE

  5. Gollum knew i was watching and knew i said he would give them a pen – that is why he never gave it. Damn you Willie Collum once again you vex me sir.

I thought the difference in prices was becasue when we played the huns some Tims have to give up their seats. I used to be one of them for years and only ever took my seat in the Regi Blinker game.

    >>>>

oh, i don’t know. it’s all hanging in the balance.

  10. There are a number of ways we could get to a newco situation and Bill Miller is only one of them. Let’s not forget that he hasn’t actually bought anything as yet. And that’s before we remember that Craig Whyte has a floating charge. That Ticketus is out over £20M and wants a return. That HMRC are watching closely.

But let’s, for the sake of argument, skip ahead and assume that a newco is in place, owns Ibrox and has at least some players. It applies to the SPL to gain the share that Rangers no longer needs.

What decision would Scotland’s football administrators make? What view would the majority of other SPL clubs take? I think we know the answers. I have no faith in any of them to put integrity above what they see as their own commerical interests.

But what of UEFA? What of Financial Fair Play?

Let’s be clear here. If UEFA grants an exception and allows a newco into the top division in these circumstances it can throw Financial Fair Play right out of the window. Platini’s big idea will be stone dead.

The precedent will be set. Not just for Scotland but for the whole of Europe.

How many top clubs are struggling with debts? And how many of them would love to dump those debts, coming back as newcos? If UEFA makes an exception for a club in a middling league, a club ranked 50th in Europe and falling, what could it do if a big club asked for the same consideration? Or several big clubs?

No, UEFA simply cannot allow a newco into the SPL.

  11. Season ticket with or without the Huns games has been commonplace for years ..

  12. I guess they didn’t give Gollum his usual bung. Either that,or the cheque bounced.

  13. Subterranean on

James, maybe you are better informed and know more than most about what is likely to happen in the coming days, weeks, months even years? Rangers’ intention has always been to dump debts and avoid taxes. HMRC know this. I expect HMRC are well prepared, as they should be with any business owing taxes. And this is an unusually high profile case involving personalities with…previous. The implications go way beyond football in Scotland.

  14. Joe Filippis Haircut on

I am no financial expert but I cannot see HMRC staning idly by while old Rangers morph into new Rangers and leave there debts behind including there unpaid tax.Now if that happens and they get away with it they will have driven a coach and horses through the tax laws. This will allow every deby ridden club in the UK to do the same and walk away from there debt. The clubs like Celtic who have been run prudently surely wont accept this happenning.H.H.

  16. Auldheid – when you said ‘I would expect’ I interpreted this as you think this is what will happen. Apologies if I misinterpreted your comments.

What you ‘expect’ would indeed be a strong punishment but it’s not gonna happen. I will be pleasantly surprised if any sanctions are applied.

Exactly my thoughts. It’s time for some of the manic depressives on this site to start taking a chill pill. Stop basing what you are going to do on conjecture. We all know they have cheated for decades which makes it all the sweeter when we triumph.

I personally hope they die and rot but I am a Celtic supporter no matter what. Being a Celtic supporter is not just about the football it is about how we live our lives. We have a social conscience they do not. Give up supporting Celtic and they have won, full stop!!

    A wee word, son.

I have been in union meetings, and been told after, that “my type” wouldn’t have got a job with them in the past, I know the score , son, how it works in bonnie Scotland.

    Let’s get something clear, ok?

rangers, as we know them, are finished, ok?

There will be no more laudrups, de boers gascoignes, etc. in our lifetime.

Have we been cheated? Of course we have.

I have been cheated out of buying in to see us play them, in the 80s and 90s, and long before that, when it was all a fix.

The question is, what do we do about it?

Do we throw our toys out the pram and say we are not playing any more?

Or do we say, we are Celtic, we will take on allcomers?

I say, we will never let the bastards grind us down, let them in to any league they want, we are the (real) people.

    What say you?

  19. The SPL/ SFA oddfellow Templars will sanction the transfer of the “soul” of evilhun1 into a new an evilhun2. The toxic “body” of evilhun1 will then be liable to creditors for all past debts. Evilhun2 will then be scotfree to play at ibrox, train at Murraypark & keep all their history. So if the “incubator” doesn’t work & the debts are not fulfilled, with tax avoided (yet again) & creditors stuffed- will the Scottish football authorities not be party to a conspiracy to avoid payment of debts? How can you have a transfer of the “soul”, ie club history, on the one side but not the crimes of the soul, ie the tax/debts?

How can anybody believe this lunatic solecism…its like something from the mind of Don Quixote.

I made the same point a few posts before yours. The Sky TV deal cannot include 4 games v Rangers as a condition. It totally undermines the sport. It removes the sport and the SFA should be telling the SPL it cannot be a condition of any contract.

Not sure what the UEFa position is but if they really want football to remain a sport then they have to set and maintain a stance tha tprotects the sport.

Can we please stop all this nonsense about board apologists and mineshafters.

If your own position can only be bolstered by demeaning those who hold a different view, then I despair.

Celtic have limited options in preventing (if they wanted to) the survival of RFCIA in the SPL. They will oppose it and have said so, but that will not prevent whatever future OTHER forces want for RFCIA coming to fruition. That is the nature of the world they and we inhabit. No, I don’t like it either, but there you go.

The SPL will vote for the money option, and struggle to reconcile that with their moral duty. The EBT scandal will not go away, regardless of the FTT decision.

Celtic will protect their own interests, and push to have rules applied consistently and impartially – as ever.

The SFA have a bigger responsibility, cannot focus simply on the money option and they are answerable to Uefa, unlike the SPL.

Now that the MSM code of silence/ignorance/complicity has been broken, the genie is out of the bottle and will not go back in.

Miller is not the saviour the daft elements if the Scottish media make him out to be. He is a chancer in the same vein as, Murray and Whyte. Miller has had financial failures in the past and he is an opportunitist. That is the calibre of the people that their club is attracting; like vultures waiting for easy pickings.

They have no Fergus, they have no Celts for Change, they have no plan, they have a discredited and anachronistic cultural identity, and they have been run for decades by proven cheats, liars and fraudsters.

  24. Pinisico – I am sorry but that smacks of absolutely lazy lazy journalism. Its not an all or nothing game this. You dont either have to act like the huns – where its all spend what you havent got or act as celtic have done – spend as little as you can get away with and hide your cash in reserves etc so the fans dont see.

Life is about speculating to accumulate – its what we do.

No-one – least of all me – asked for spending like Rangers – but what we have done for the last few years is try to get away with spending next to nothing – regardless of what we could afford. That resulted in a needless 3 in a row for the huns.

So please dont give me the revisionist history lesson.

Auldhied – Celtic must do everything they can here to stop the huns reaping what they sowed. I think we all understand that what they can do is limited. But they must be brave, vocal and show the considerable influence we should weild. Instead they have said nothing – absolutley nothing. And now the media are openly saying we are Rangers ally in this. Its an absolute slap in the face to all of us and disgraces the memory of all our forebears who fought against the sectarianism, bigotry and racism.

It is for that reason that this wont be a simple split in our support. Its a massive and unhealable schism that will open up.

Scottish society will gerrymander to ensure Rangers dont just survive – but thrive.

Celtic could well end up the worst victim of this scandal.

  25. Snake Plissken on

This is a time for calm heads.

I am the last person to be a board apologist but lets be clear, there is not a lot Celtic can do IF:

    1. A bank has allegedly threatened to pull the plug on the gang of 10 unless they vote for Rangers

    2. A corrupt deal has been discussed with various parties to get them a free pass.

Celtic can blow the Sky deal and hurt other teams in the pocket but resigning from the league with nowhere to go is idiocy. If Celtic had a way out of Scottish football I could see the point but to resign to go to Division 3 is STUPID and moreover it gives the filth their biggest fantasy – Celtic out of the picture.

Celtic WILL vote against them because at the least politically they know they cannot do anything else and Peter Lawwell knows this all too well. This is the man who laughed his head off regarding the 29 Million pound bid from an unknown universe gag. He and Celtic never put any pressure on Neil Lennon in October because they knew the animals were weeks away from bombing.

We have had a laugh, and we’ve loved the horsemen of the apocalypse jokes but that’s all they are going to be – too many doors are being opened to them and that was ALWAYS going to happen.

We know it is rigged BUT IT ALWAYS WAS in their favour. If they found the Moors murders bodies under the turf at Ibrox no one would be arrested and Neil Lennon would be blamed for it.

So it appears we are being faced with a compromise. Protest at the authorities craven behaviour and slimy deal, form financial punishment strategies for the SPL/SFA and most importantly Newco but don’t hurt Celtic. Celtic have done nothing wrong and we will be treated as pariahs (more so than usual) if they make any more noises than they need to. I have heard the arguments about Celtic stopping this dead but I cannot see how any of them would help Celtic long term as we’re stuck in the SPL and I cannot see how hurting Celtic is helping.

It is a sham, cheats have and will prosper but it isn’t any different from any other time in our history. Now we know how Barcelona felt when Real Madrid’s training ground was sold to clear their debts. Rangers have always and will always be allowed to do as they please but for people on here to suggest withholding money from Celtic (assuming you want to go and can afford it) seems to me to be futile and results in hurting the club WE love whilst helping them.

Michael Johnston the Kilmarnock chairman has now said what they all think – no Rangers hurts them in the books and they don’t care about sporting integrity because they have none. They are only thinking about their pockets. So Celtic must start to boycott Kilmarnock – that’s fine pal, you’ve just lost your few grand from us.

But always look on the bright side of life:

Newco will be crippled for a time while Celtic will get stronger and dominate.

Other clubs will have fans who walk away as will Celtic but they’ll be back if they are in a final and in time people will forget about this sordid episode (it might take decades but it will happen).

Celtic will win and win honestly while securing European football.

If you feel strongly enough don’t go back should your fears be realized but as emotions are running high perhaps waiting until something happens is the best policy.

Remember as things stand Rangers have no buyer only a bidder and his plans are like him unknown. They are due to lose their players and what if Bill Miller does walking away? We know what happens if he does walk away and then there is Craig Whyte.

There is a lot to happen yet.
