Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark all possible for Celtic

947

Delighted for Aberdeen, winning away from home in Croatia is no mean feat for a Scottish club, but a 0-3 result, anywhere, is a special result.  None of the other 32 away teams could manage so much as a two goal win.

The Inverness defeat on their maiden European performance was pity, if not a surprise.  Winning your home game is regarded as the Cardinal Rule in Europe, but they have a puncher’s chance next week in Romania.  Score the opening goal and it’s anyone’s game.

Today’s draw for the Champions League 3rd round qualifier has the potential to get a bit tasty.  There are plenty of potential opponents from northern Europe with trips to Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark all possible, while Celtic are the only seed from northern Europe.  Hopefully Uefa, in their keenness for geographical neighbourliness, don’t feel the need to send us to Israel, Poland or Serbia.  If we take care of Stjarnan, of course.

  2. Top of the morning to you all from a bright and blustery Fife.

murdochbhoy posted this earlier and I am grateful to him for this fascinating tale:

    Good morning CQNers,

Some while ago someone posted a link to the story of Duffy’s Cut and I read with interest this morning the culmination, in part, of the story.

The remains of one of the victims, Catherine Burns, have been shipped home and her funeral mass and interment will happen tomorrow at St Patrick’s Church, Clonoe.

Well worth a look and respect to the good Americans who made it their business to get to the bottom of this mystery of a darker time.

Blantyretim, your dad was sitting with Charlie Gallagher two rows in front of us on Wednesday.

    Both looked in fettle.

I had to explain to my son the important role each played for us in their time at our club.

The older guys who sit beside us were very happy to see your dad and Charlie.

I see the Palace has reacted to The Sun’s story (and film) showing her Madge as a 7 year old being taught the Nazi salute by her Mother and Uncle.

A Palace source said: “Most people will see these pictures in their proper context and time. This is a family playing, and momentarily paying tribute to their loyal subjects in Northern Ireland. The Red Hand salute denotes the heraldry and history of Ulster. To imply anything else is misleading and dishonest.”

    Not.

Was it her Uncle Edward who taught her it,or Viscount Rothermere of The Daily Mail?

Surprisingly,The Mail suggests the former without a mention of their former proprietor.

As the Mail says the Queen cannot be blamed for her childhood actions while playing with her family.

However, it does tell us a thing or two about her family.

  14. For anyone hoping to attend the Baile Átha Cliath 1916 CQN gathering may I recommended a wee book for your delectation and education.

The fighting at the Mount street bridge was the heaviest of the rising. A handful of volunteers holding out against vastly superior numbers and numerous frontal assaults from crown forces. The action has been referred to as ‘ The Irish Thermopylae’ I would also suggest adding the site to the ‘sight seeing ‘ tour

Blood on the Streets: 1916 and the Battle for Mount Street Bridge by Paul O’Brien

‘Blood on the Streets’ explores the people, the places and the context of the real events of the battle for Mount Street Bridge. Based around the bridge over the canal at Mount Street, three well-positioned groups of volunteers led by Lieutenant Michael Malone held out against a far greater number of British soldiers arriving from Kingstown. In scenes that were reminiscent of the terrible warfare of the Western Front in World War I, British soldiers advanced under heavy fire against rebel positions. This book contextualises the battle and the events surrounding the Rising itself and features the only account written by a British army officer of the executions at Kilmainham jail in the aftermath of the Rising. It also features a fascinating analysis of the tactics and strategy not just of the battle but of the whole Rising.
