Sweeten the medicine, Celtic

991

There is an unusually sombre tempo head of tomorrow’s Champions League last 16 tie, a consequences of the 0-3 reversal at home three weeks ago and the general sentiment around Scottish football this week, but this match is an excellent test for both manager and playing squad.

We are a Champions League team again with aspirations to achieve at this level next season.  Having finally overcome the hoodoo of never having won away from home in the competition, we must use occasions like tomorrow to continue our growth in the competition.

We defended our 18-yard line in the Camp Nou and almost got away with a point.  The plan was wrong in Lisbon, where a talented Benfica controlled midfield and recorded a narrow win, but the win against Spartak in Moscow was deserved.

Celtic might not be able to qualify for the quarter finals but they can win the match tomorrow; this is an achievable objective which would sweeten the inevitable medicine.

I struggle to understand why folks even participate in the political process nowadays

Too many (if not all of them) are in it to line their own pockets and don’t give a four ecks about the section of society that they purport to represent

Question: if any party, (lets call them party A the government majority,) makes a new proposal to give the poor/rich a hard time, the opposing Party, (Party B, the opposition) immediately feign uproar, morale outrage and vote en masse against the proposal, even though defeat is inevitable.

Howevah, five years later, things change around and Party B now stops being the opposition and is now the government. But the thing that bothers me is that even though Party is now in Power, they never repeal the laws that they voted against.

When have you ever watched a Political programme where the two parties have agreed to a compromise on common position that is for the common good of the country. They simply spend their airtme using manipulated and unproven stats to bash their opponents rather than be constructive.

In my opinion, Party politics should be banned. MP should be elected as individuals and a simple majority vote would not be enough to elect them either, they would need a minimum percentage turnout and a majority.

Whether they like it or not, the population is turning its back on mainstream party politics, but they are too busy running down previous governments to even notice

  15. On the matter of withdrawing support:

Its not that folk do not want to go back of course, its that self respect demands that they cannot.

Yes self respect. If I could find a way to believe that a loan in the form used by Rangers was not a payment to induce a player to sign, I would. However I cannot, a loan is a payment at the point of paying and nothing will convince me otherwise. HMRC require similar convincing.

Similarly when I see rules that say all documentation MUST be DELIVERED and it is not, I cannot accept that the player who was registered on less than open grounds was eligible to play in any games thereafter. It makes no sense of the rule and if all clubs were to adopt less than full disclosure as their policy, and why should they not, we have football anarchy.

The implications of the LNS enquiry will have long lasting ripple effects if it is not rectified, it drives a horse and cart through the registration procedure where a club is ready to take a fine as the only consequence when improper registration is done deliberately and ill gotten gains are retained, including the prize money. Its a footballing nonsense.

To accept either of these concepts that twist reality back to front is an affront to self.

In a way those advocating withdrawal of support are saying to our clubs I accept I am no longer watching a game of chance where the odds are natural, but one where chance is further biased against my club and that’s ok. No self respecting person would agree to that.

In a way what we are all asking for is some evidence that our self respect and the right to hold on to it is being recognised by those running our game and I see no evidence of that so far from the SFA or msm at large.

I do not want to turn my back on my club, but if they want me to keep my self respect and get my support they are going to have to take a stand on principle and insist that measures are introduced that satisfy me and supporters at large the SFA are policing clubs on the basis of precedent that they cannot be trusted. Is anybody at the SFA even capable of thinking this way?

The next test of SFA policing is the award of a national club licence to The Rangers, based on interim results and, taking the share issue income out of the picture, on what basis will SFA grant a licence? Will it be unconditional or will they insist that The Rangers balance their books on the basis that they do not achieve straight promotions to the SPL or will that necessity to survive become the same driver for survival that the pursuit of CL money was and so render the lower leagues meaningless for the next two/three seasons?

The SFA do have power over clubs via the licensing regime but are they willing and ready to use it? A statement to that effect recognising past failures and proposed corrections would be a start.

  16. Not expecting any miracles tonight but it’s been one helluva journey this Celtic side has travelled In Europe this season & I’ve enjoyed every minute of it,we may go out tonight but Neil and his team have surpassed all our expectations, finishing with a win tonight would be an excellent end to a great campaign

I think this is something like our 12th game? in Europe this season that is tesTIMony to how far we have come,my only wish is I would love to play Juventus at home again as I think we would see a different result

  18. A lot of political talk on here this morning so here is my bit.

Just imagine for a moment that Capitalism is a system which is only good for 5 % of the population; difficult for 75% of the population and varying degrees of unpleasant for the remaining 20 %.

Party A says: Vote for us and this is how we will run this country under a Capitalist System.

Party B says: Vote for us and this is how we will run this country under a Capitalist System.

Party C says: Vote for us etc etc.

Just for good measure,Party D says : Vote for us to become a separate country and this is how we will run the Capitalist System.

In ALL cases, the end result is 5%,75% and 20% all experiencing life as mentioned above. For the System to work, these fihures have to remain in play.

Having imagined the above (as requested at the outset),why would anyone vote for any one Party rather than another?

Think the figs in brackets are from previous month. There are always issues with this type of approach. In Chelsea’s case, they will be holding a lot of points from winning the CL last year but first at the moment is a bit of a stretch but this is how the site describes this latest update:

After 22 months FC Barcelona have lost the leading position in the Club World Ranking and fallen to 5th place after the defeat in Milan and the elimination from the Copa del Rey. Chelsea FC London now lead the Club World Ranking, for the 4th time since January 1991. But the team from London needs to progress in the national FA Cup and in the UEFA Europa League to maintain their leading position.

With Chelsea still in Europa League, they will continue to pick up points.

When we got to UEFA final in 2003, we reached Number 1 in this list.

“The SPL Board notes that the Commission has upheld a number of complaints against Rangers OldCo and that Rangers OldCo has been found to have breached SPL and Scottish FA Rules over an 11-year period in relation to the non-disclosure of financial arrangements involving many of its Players”.

So let’s leave it at that, eh?

    ==============

The idea that Scottish Football can leave it at that will not stand for the self respecting reasons I’ve outlined.

There will be no moving on in the positive sense until action is taken to address what Rangers were guilty of – breaking the trust system under which they and all clubs were lightly “policed” but which they breached.

The SFA have to go, its them or Scottish football now and its not just Celtic supporters saying this.

    Auldheid.

They need to play European football to survive. Imagine the mess when they return to the top flight.

For that reason, Celtic have two seasons to extract themselves from the mess that is Scottish football.

    ———————-

I have a wee calculation that is being checked that suggests without Share income they would be bust this season and even with it will run out of cash next.

Its pretty detailed, based on past and recent accounts data but with one or two assumptions that need to be checked although two seasons at most before the share income is used up if they do not start to balance the books.

It also depends on achieving the SPL in a straight run (hard luck all SFL clubs) and even then they are losing money. It allows for a return to investors but if the bottom line is negative where is that return to come from? An investor worry.

They are only cash stable by having share income to draw on, after that they have to cut the wage bill and increase ticket prices. It is one thing paying half price to save your team for a while, it is quite another paying double to watch pish.

They could of course just be allowed back into the top tier without the climbing divisions charade but as things stand the future aint bright and it aint orange, hence the mutterings of a leg up so that they can screw up the game again.

  30. Talking about Celtic football is the only Sottish football worth talking about. Sinn Fein.

The rest is corrupt, bloated, and fat on their c.e.o’s bonuses, expenses, private health care, gated communities, masonic beanos, spoiled bloated lives…….and nancy-boy cars like they were Jenson’s and their bintz.

    We are better than that.

We’ll show up, season in, season out (no viable options), beat the clowns stupid, laugh at sevco, and continue to hope our children don’t get murdered for The Green and White, being worn….legitimately.

    Aye……right.

  31. sftb,

Good post, which sums up the shocking situation we are in.

Many of us harp back to Fergus and further back to Kelly and what they would have done.

We don’t need to go so far back.

In 2008, Celtic spoke up for sporting integrity re Extensiongate and carried the day.

For me, the present situation is far and away more serious than that time.

In the absence of a reaction from Celtic, they are implicitly condoning corruption.

Worse still, is the position the support will be in.

Do they become complicit by continuing to support or do they hold on to their innate sense of fair play and justice, of which we are renowned and say, ” enough, not in my name”.

The fans of all clubs are being placed in this position and it would serve this site better if that was the issue we concentrated on, not in a finger pointing way, than which shower of imposters and facillitators carry sway in a proposed Referendum.
