Tallinn or Gibraltar in Champions League for Celtic

532

Brendan Rodgers will start Celtic’s Champions League trail against Flora Tallin, from Estonia, or Lincoln Red Imps, from Gibraltar, in the tournament’s second qualifying round.

Flora, who are seeded against Lincoln Red Imps, are midseason, but went out in the first qualifying round a year ago to Rabotnicki, from Macedonia (who reached the play-off round before losing narrowly to Russians, Rubin Kazan).

Red Imps won the big (cough) Iberian derby last year when they eliminated Santa Coloma from Andorra, before crashing to Erik Sviatchenko’s Midtjylland.

Neither are the British Isles-based tie Brendan Rodgers would have preferred, travelling arrangements will cost an extra day’s training, but there were far more arduous opponents in the draw.

Games take place on 12/13th July and 19/20th July. The away tie is scheduled first – but you know the drill, don’t book flights until Uefa have ratified match arrangements.

    The “Leave” proposition is completely out: Out of the EU; Out of the Single Market; Unsubscribing from the 4 freedoms.

    Thereafter, there will be a series of agreements negotiated to replace those by which we are currently bound. There are literally thousands of them to negotiate, and it’s unlikely that it will be a straightforward process. Certainly, it will not be ‘alright on the night’ as some Brexiteers suggest. The EU’s negotiating position will be influenced by the fundamental requirement to demonstrate to the wider membership that you simply cannot have the benefits of the Single Market without subscribing to its rules. Otherwise, why would anyone stay in?

    The Brexit proposition is NOT a Norway model. Norway subscribes to the rules of the Single Market and the 4 freedoms. As does Iceland. Each is a member of the European Economic Area, and has adopted its rules.

    Brexit is NOT a Swiss model either, whereby the rules of the Single Market have been adopted via a series of bilatteral agreements rather than via the EEA.

    Out means out. It means being no closer to Europe than Venezuela in terms of the movement of goods, services, people and money. The likelihood is that the UK-EU relationship will default to the current WTO basis for developed nations, which means tariffs on trade, which means less trade since goods will be more expensive – both imports and exports. Which is why virtually every organisation concerned with international trade, economic management and business growth is saying: Don’t do it Pinnochio!

    That, and the unpleasant prospect of Britain turning in on itself to find its inner Nigel Farage.

    Perhaps the most regretable aspect of the whole bollox is that there is a valid and well-founded argument for changing the EU model, and it simply hasn’t been heard above the xenophobic clamour. Whether the argument has currency in the UK and more widely in Europe we’ll never know.

    The Brexitteers (not UKIP), or some of them, will, I suspect, demand a second referendum, assuming it’s a relatively close vote to Remain, not a rerun of a General Election.

    I just think it will be amusing to see how the nats might react to that scenario.

    Might have to re-calibrate my irony and hypocrisy meter.

    In return,can I suggest that you travel to Lochinver tomorrow morning and watch a French trawler filling 10 articulated Lorrry,s with Monkfish and see them being shipped straight to France with no economic benefit to the local economy.Total value of the one boats catch is approximately £450,000.There are 8 of these boats landing regularly and unregulated.

    The entire Scottish Fishermens Organisation is not allowed to land one single box of Monkfish from the West Coast of Scotland.

    No, the nat leadership don’t want a second referendum, in fact it’s the very last thing they want, but they have to keep enough of their numpties on the hook by suggesting that another referendum is close at hand.

    The point is if there is a demand for a second EU referendum the nats are going to have to respond somehow. How they frame that response without exposing themselves to further ridicule remains to be seen.

  18. Russia has always produced international teams of quality but watching that team being played off the park last night by Wales was unbelievable. Wales can be another Leicester City if they continue in this mode. Mostly journeymen with the exception of a couple of players but with a terrific team spirit.

    I like the look of Joe Allen who is supposed to be a target of Brendan Rodgers but if he continues to produce this kind of display he may be out of our range.

    ##

    That’s what I was thinking last night, but I realised the sides I was thinking of were from the old USSR, which was a much bigger country than Russia. That lot last night were poor.

  22. Ernie Lynch………….True, if you factor in Ukraine etc. but still a helluva big country and it was still a shock to the system to see a Russian team devoid of any kind of spirit or organisation.

  23. The Russian team was known to be very poor before the competition started. I even heard some English pundits stating that their manager should go immediately if England failed to beat them.

    I didn’t think they were that bad, I know different now.

    However take nothing away from Wales . Great performance, especially so when you consider the resources of each country.

    HH.

  24. What the Res 12 supporters failed to clarify and define, in their eagerness to pursue the issue, was the/their desired outcome.

    Basically that is why it never captured the attention of the vast majority of Celtic supporters.

    It is all very well to identify perceived wrongdoing, however there must be a consequential ‘punch line’.

    At no time did the Resolutioners prove the actual qualitative and quantitative ‘damage’ done, nor explain the process that would redress it. It was always for others to ‘take up the cudgel’ and finish the job – Celtic board – SFA – UEFA.

    In the end it turned into a student-like game of oneupmanship – a debating

    society with tee-shirts. Those not sharing the ‘view’ were disparaged.

    At every juncture it seemed there was a machiavellian entity set on scuppering all the ‘good work’ – e.g. all British newspapers – all media organisations – SFA – and finally UEFA.

    It was implied that all these organisations had been ‘got at’ and the so-called all powerful Level 5, Ladbrokes and the Masonic Lodge were ‘pulling the strings’

    Yes of course there are still important questions to be tackled in the omnishambles that is the ‘Rangers ‘ downfall. I have always said that the verdict of the Supreme Court is the key and I stand by that.

    What really upset me was the attempt by some, not the Resolutioners, to use the issue as a weapon to attack Celtic FC, for their own agenda, including attempts to stir-up a boycott the sale of season tickets.

    It didn’t work – 50,000 plus saw to that.

    * List A has to be submitted by the following fixed deadlines:

    * 7 July 2016 (24.00CET) for all matches in the second qualifying round;

    * 21 July 2016 (24.00CET) for all matches in the third qualifying round;

    * 8 August 2016 (24.00CET) for all matches in the play-offs;

    * 1 September 2016 (24.00CET) for all further matches up to and including the final.

    * For the three qualifying rounds and the play-offs, a club may register a maximum of one new eligible player on List A after the above-mentioned deadlines, provided the quota of locally trained players is respected. Such registration must be completed by 24.00CET on the day before the relevant first-leg match and the club’s association must confirm in writing that the new player is eligible to play at domestic level at this time.
