Tannadice the scene for Cup quarter final

877

On Saturday my mind wandered, as it does, to the demise of Gretna in 2008.  The village team were bankrolled through the Scottish league system until promotion to the SPL in 2007 but then the cash ran out.  The club went into liquidation a few weeks from the end of the season but while most of the first team squad were made redundant, a few remained on a week-to-week basis to see out the remaining league programme, assisted considerably by the SPL and Livingston FC, who made their ground available.

Should Rangers fail around the same time, I thought, how apt it would be for us to meet them in the Scottish Cup final.  We would be there at the end to wave goodbye to a unique institution.  Witnesses to the final whistle on a club with an enormously controversial history.

Unfortunately, my hopes were dashed by Dundee United at Ibrox yesterday, who Flushed Away the opposition and won their first game against an SPL team in 2012.  We will have to scramble for tickets for the prospective event at another venue.

United seem set to try their hardest to spoil my enjoyment of the Cup.  Our quarter final draw against them next month will be one of the toughest games of the season.

It’s been bugging me for a while now, at the back of my mind , a figure from literature, film, history or current affairs that reminds me exactly of Craig Whtye.

I’ve got it now. Craig Whyte IS Jeffrey Archer.

Did members of staff at a Scottish institution get bad news today about their future?

“..the degree of recklessness shows Mr Whyte to be thoroughly unfit to be a director.”

I’m guessing that’s not a quote from stewart Regan this afternoon?

  5. I did not spill, because I respected the work of those who did the digging. I was aware that it might come out and was on stand-by, but little did I know that they couldn’t keep it quiet at the BBC. All precautions were taken.

Anyway, there is a little more.

    Amazingly no!!!

  10. twists n turns on

On my (our?) fav subject at present, namely the demise of the currants, and more specifically, the clamour from the media to allow them an easy return to the top flight. It has been pretty much a one point argument, that point being that Scottish football needs them, and I have probably heard that argument from 50 different sources now.

The proponents of the “need them” argument seem to give no consideration to morals, to fairness, to the need for the consequences of wrong doing to be commensurate to the seriousness of the offence. A 10 point penalty, and re-entry? That anyone could think that this would be enough to punish a decade of cheating taxes, and by default cheating every other team in Scotland, is bewildering. Presumably these people think Sweeney Todd was a rather careless barber?

Rebirth should it happen, should commence from the lowest division. Anything else is a cop out and makes a mockery of our game, and further cements the arguments that Scotland remains in the 17th century. It endorses the notion that the “weearrapeepil” element, are indeed a wider element of society than the government, police, SFA and SPL amongst others, are comfortable in openly admitting to. Make no mistake, only one club in Britain could expect such exceptional treatment. History deigns that to be fact.

On the issue of the ” we all need them”, an analysis of that argument falls down in a couple of areas at least. The cost of the demise of “ra peepil” to the likes of Celtic, Aberdeen, Motherwell, Hearts, Dundee Utd, Hibs and Kilmarnock, to name more than half of the top flight, would be what? To Celtic, it costs us nothing, and indeed all but ensures European football at CP is a certainty. The loss of 7,000 away fans twice per annum, is approx £300k to Celtic. It is negligible. It would be wiped out with 1 or 2 Euro ties, even if that were only qualifiers. The league title prize money also needs to be included. Celtic would be better off.

What then about the “loss” to the others? 2 home ties with an average of anything between 6,000 and 8,000 away fans’ revenue? The lost income would be something around the same ‘loss’ as Celtic? £300k max? Wouldn’t fans of Hearts, United Dons etc prefer take their chances of securing a European place and bringing in revenue that way? Would they all prefer to sell their souls to the devil rather than sieze the opportunity to see their teams enter into European adventure?

The 3 seasons following the demise of the financially challenged would see revenues in the 3rd, 2nd and 1st divisions increase as they fought (pun intended) their way back to the top division.

It is a myth that is being touted by a sectarian media with only one goal in mind, that being to see their “peepil” remain within the upper tier. Celtic need to make representations to the relevant authorities immediately the admin or liquidation becomes reality. In the interests of fairness they simply must speak out.

  11. Ahhhhh is that the news we were waiting for that the Wee Craigy may have, allegedly, told porkies in court. That will come as a massive surprise to everyone – NOT. I was hoping for another GIRFUY moment. Shucks disappointed to say the least – no pleasing some people i guess

  12. Evening all.

Been out all day. Beautiful day here in North Ayrshire but I spent most of it in Glasgow, where it was rotten. I actually met in the flesh that mythical character, the Celtic supporter who actually wants them to survive. He reckoned it was in our commercial interest to do so. While I tried to show him it need not be so bad, I ended up simply informing him that their demise is, imo, worth whatever it costs us.

    Paul67,

Tannadice it is then. It will be quite a game.

  13. The Battered Bunnet on

Perjury? There isn’t much of a case to go with here. Good for Mark Daly to dig up the original case paper that resulted in Whyte’s disqualification, but I’m pretty sure even an apprentice could come up with a defence to any perjury charge given the circumstances.

I’d say this was the BBC saying in corporate speak: “Come on over here if you think you’re hard enough.”

I understand that an unnamed agency have the contract for renting the away team’s technical area. Part of their cost cutting efforts, it seems.

In spite of rigorous attempts to trace the agency involved, they still don’t know…….wait for it…..

    Who Let The Dugout!!

  17. dont kid youselves folks.

there has to be an unbelievable hidden agenda for anyone to end up in jail for ‘perjury’of this kind.

    just ask ‘tommy sheridan’.

you could almost make a case for perjury after every court case loser, but the political power will has to be there.
