Tannadice the scene for Cup quarter final

On Saturday my mind wandered, as it does, to the demise of Gretna in 2008.  The village team were bankrolled through the Scottish league system until promotion to the SPL in 2007 but then the cash ran out.  The club went into liquidation a few weeks from the end of the season but while most of the first team squad were made redundant, a few remained on a week-to-week basis to see out the remaining league programme, assisted considerably by the SPL and Livingston FC, who made their ground available.

Should Rangers fail around the same time, I thought, how apt it would be for us to meet them in the Scottish Cup final.  We would be there at the end to wave goodbye to a unique institution.  Witnesses to the final whistle on a club with an enormously controversial history.

Unfortunately, my hopes were dashed by Dundee United at Ibrox yesterday, who Flushed Away the opposition and won their first game against an SPL team in 2012.  We will have to scramble for tickets for the prospective event at another venue.

United seem set to try their hardest to spoil my enjoyment of the Cup.  Our quarter final draw against them next month will be one of the toughest games of the season.

  1. did anybody see todays daily Mirroe – northern ireland edition?

it had a cracked rnagers crest

  2. All this talk of wanting people dead… it’s not right… no matter who, wishing them dead is just… wrong. Please fellow Celtic fans, don’t do it. Leave that kind of gutter talk for the “thems”.

Wanting Rangers FC dead, now that’s a different matter obviously. But wanting people dead just doesn’t rest easy.

    No, am no’ a hun.

  3. looking for 2 tickets for Swinecastle folks

Not my choice for an away match but my daughter is insistent…

    email me at malmcgreg@aol.com

On the back of the BBC report, surely Strathclyde’s finest are bound to investigate and report to the PF?

  4. Amadeus.

Thanks for your input. Very interesting.

When the story returns to the edinburgh-based colourful impresario and the institution of RFC, you’ll have my undivided attention.

  5. Nuclear Bovril and a Half Munched Pie on

A confused bear on Snyde the noo. In my head he looks like 80’s rubbish puppet Nookie bear. Boss eyed and glaccid.

  6. Malc- I see lots of wanting to see the festering institution that is Rankers die a slow and lingering death- but nothing about wanting individuals to pop their clogs. Are you sure that you read that here?

  7. I wasn’t accusing anybody of being a hun. I was pointing out that certain comments were suggestive of hun denial, maybe not you, I don’t keep track of it all.

Incidentally, Sheridan wasn’t stitched up – he was proven in court to be a liar. Guess what, he got the jail for it!

One thing a man, at least a real man, should conserve and protect is his reputation by both words and deed. Telling lies precludes this possibility and therefore demeans their life. That is their own problem.

    It’s called honour.

If you think Tommy was stitched up, good luck with that.

    More to come…

    I hope

  8. Bbc piece seems to suggest that Whyte acted illegally, taking part in decision making in a company while he was banned from directorship. Think amadeus oughtvto just tell the whole story so thatbidiots like me dont end up in court!

  9. What does lennie (vile evil manager of celtic who was seen to aggressively celebrate his team’s second goal at the weekend, I was disgusted at this public display of support) do with the newbies ? His team must be in the best form of any team in scotland or engerland. How do you deal with that ? wait for injuries to give people a chance ? subs? It’s a difficult one imo but then againwhat do I know, I thought coisteee would be gone by christmas and look at him now.

    Post it Antrim Kev!

i genuinley dont know how to

  11. Joe Filippis Haircut on

I understand that if Craig Whyte has skeletons in his closet the mrdia will see him as fair game. What I dont understand is the man who led them into there current plight Sir David Murray seems to getting off rather easily? H.H.

  12. !!Bada Bing!! Kano 1000 on

BBC look as if they have got Whyte hook.,line and sinker.SFA and plod should be interested but…….

  13. Son of Gabriel on

Cue the accusations of the BBC being a catholic organisation…

Redknapp will be in dugout as far as I know, mentioned it on SSN earlier.

If Black is out then thats a huge difference to the game. Even if its only saving Vic’s shins.

Totally agree with you. I don’t care if it’s Thatcher or Paisley that is being spoken about.

  15. bournesouprecipe on

I think the 17,200 crowd, and the stolen 30,000 bears tells a bigger story than the BBC investigation.

  16. twists n turns on

exactly mate. The media have very convienently latched on this Whyte fiasco and are heaping the pressure on. Seems they think that integrity is very important. I agree. Why then do they abandon their own integrity and suggest menial punishment is appropriate when it comes to the admin issue?

Double standards and hypocritical in the extreme.

  17. The Battered Bunnet on

You got to give credit where it’s due.

“Ally McCoist needs to stand or fall as a manager. Right now he’s doing more falling than standing.”

    Fair play to you Ned.

  18. Tell us something we don’t know…………….

(ho’d a thunk there was anything iffy about this whole pantomime and the currant actor…..?)

It’s the ‘Amber Gambler’ with other peoples money…….where the real story lies.

Fine, dispose of the stooge, but at least grasp the nettle, pursue the controversial institution and examine the role of the previous ‘owner’.

    Credibility please!

  19. Snake Plissken on

It seems clear Whyte will not sue the BBC and all the previous threat was just so much bluster.

If the BBC have him by the short and curlys this story will run and run.

    Possible perjury?

    What else is there?

  20. twists n turns on

If I was Neil, I’d ban the squad from reading the papers, tweeting, facebook etc. Too many distractions going on. We have work to do. Strating against the mini’s. Massive game. Massive

  21. Agree that Minty is getting away scot free in the press.

Not only has he duped the taxman and helped his team cheat their way to glory but, through the due diligence process – it is a two way process – duped the Teddy Bear fans that he was selling to a man of “substance” – some even said off the radar wealth – and now the accusations are that this man could perhaps have have committed perjury.

  22. The Ghood will prevail on

can one of our Photoshop experts give us a picture of Craig Whyte wearing a Celtic scarf please?

I mean, it’s perfectly clear he’s part of a Popish-Sinn Fein plot to destroy the hun!

    Go Whytey!!!!

  23. Dead and Loving it on

I think that if I was a hun the question i would be asking now are

is there something that we can do just now to find out if money is leaving rangers

and going into overseas bank accounts

one thing I think about FPLG is, he will not walk away from rangers because he is so loyal and loves the club(which he may well do

he will wait to be sacked and get his money

  24. Malc

I agree totally re the ‘wishing people dead’ whether it is thatcher or paisley or whoever. It feels wrong to me

That is the kind of pondlife behaviour we might expect of others…….especially those soon to have no ‘institution’ or even football team to follow follow.

and I really dislike both of these wretches as much as anyone.

  25. Good evening friends.

Matters still bubbling along very nicely by the sound of it.

  26. How can someone be as stupid as Chris on Clyde – an alleged Celtic fan – come on the radio and suggest that we are the team with the problem should we not win this league?

    A) We WILL win it

    B) Celtic supporters should never give any succour, especially to idiots like Keevins to them while , by default, effectively having a pop at our manger.

    Shame on you Chris.
